QUESTION: How does one eliminate the borders of a slice that appear in documents displayed in Firefox.
BACKGROUND: When I view the following link in Safari, no borders appear. When I view it Firefox, there are borders everywhere.

To remove borders from linked images, add this to your CSS:
a img {border:none}

Thanks, Nancy, but I am not sure that your suggestion is the proper cure, unless perhaps it can be applied to <img> tags.
If you look at the reference document (see original post) you will see that in some cases the borders appear and in some cases they do not. If you look further at the source file of the reference document you will see that the tables that contain the elements whose borders are showing have border attributes set to zero.
I realize that this is perhaps old technology, but I am loathe to redesign the whole page, as I have so much else going on. This said, I am willing to tweek it where necessary, because it is still a very useful cover page to the even more primitive set of pages that it introduces.

I don't see borders in FF. I see artifacts on several images like the one shown below. Could this be what you're seeing?

Great news. These things take time. Best of luck on your project.

Your table cells are not snugging up next to each other, leaving the occasional gap where your black background-color shows through.
I notice that you are using spacer-gifs here and there in your layout. Even at 1 pixel wide, they will throw off the "fit" of images in tables. Although it appears that they are each in their own table cell, they should present no problem width-wise (set at 1px). But check on their heights...they might be forcing the table cells to expand just that extra pixel, which will of course leave a gap.

I performed an experiment and changed the background color from black to red. Sure enough the color of the visible lines changed from from black to red, as well. Thus the lines are probably not due to the presence or absence of borders; rather, they are probably due, as you suggested, to bad alignment and spacing. I also checked the size of the spacer.gif in Fireworks. The dimensions are 1x1 pixel.
Please understand that this page was designed with the help of ImageReady. Thus, many of the structural elements that appear were not entered by me. Whether it was in conjunction with the design of this page or another, I cannot recall, but I do remember that spacer GIFs are used as placeholders to insure that empty cells are not ignored in certain browsers. Thus, removing them has the potential to destroy the overall layout in some instances.
Any more suggestions?
