Big problems exporting a video in Media Encoder - detailed info

Problems with exporting media through Adobe Media Encoder.

Hi there.  I am really confused now, writing this, cause my Premiere CS4 has worked pretty good the year I have had it.

So it has chosen a really bad timing to cause me problems.

I am working on a big musicvideo production. The whole video is now finished, and the labels and the artists are waiting for the video. But I’m facing big problems now. And I have tried everything to solve this, without succeeding.

·         When I export the video, the Adobe Media Encoder sometimes waits and waits and waits and waits, and nothing happens.

·
When it does start, if goes to about 20%, and then it interrupts and give me "an unknown" error in the log-file:
Screen shot:

·
Sometimes when I open the project , it gives me the following message when importing the media files.

·
The weird thing is that this only happens to the HD version. I have the same video in DV version, in a DV project, and it exports without any problem.

So PLEASE help me here, what shall I do??? I MUST finish this video!

Will your HD project encode to uncompressed avi  / mov?

What is your system setup? CPU, memory, disks, video, OS, PR version,  etc.

The error encoding can be caused by insufficient space or speed of the disk(s).

At least start with updating your video driver.

You mention everything CS4 is on your L drive. Does that include the CS4 programs or were these installed on your C drive?

The WD Caviar Black is about the fastest 7200 SATA drive available, but if you install CS4 on another disk or even in a different directory than suggested, it can sometimes cause difficulties. The fact that it is your fastest drive will have only a minor impact on loading times of the program, but it may be better to install the programs in the default directory on your C drive and keep all the rest on your L drive, project, media cache, media etc.

If you want to try that, deactivate, uninstall, run Clean Script CS4 2 or 3 times, reboot between runs, install, activate, update is the proper sequence to do that. It may help, but no guarantees.

Use your I drive as well. It is better to have all 3 disks used for different tasks, than concentrating everything on a single disk, because the speed advantage will quickly turn into a disadvantage when you ask a disk to do multiple things at the same time. Maybe have a look at my Storage guide for hints, but look at it from this perspective:

If you need to transport 2 cases from A to B and you can only fit 1 case in your car at a time, you need 2 round trips. If you fit 1 in your car and 1 on your bicycle (which is slower than your car) being driven at the same time, your final delivery at B may still be quicker than the 2 round trips by car.

Can you successfully encode to for instance MPEG2-DVD or do you get the same error? If so, check your timeline carefully that there are no blank places in your timeline or corrupt frames. If it works, that implies there is something wrong with the WMV settings, although they look OK to me.

    ButchMo,

I am not going to be much help but I think our problems are related.  I think Media Encoder or Dynamic Link has somehow corrupted your file.  I was going to re-install as well but think I will hold up for now...  here's my link if you got time to waste.

Good luck with it and I will keep an eye out to see if you get it solved.

You really got me stumped here. Can you try to nest this sequence in a new one and try again and if that does not work, create a new project and import the existing sequence into this new project. Just to make sure your project is not corrupted in some way.

Harm, I would be willing to bet that neither of those will work.  I tried this with my problem as well.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for him though!

If that is the case I'm out of suggestions on how to solve this. If you can't encode to any format, be it MPEG2-DVD, WMV, QT or whatever, it is rather difficult to post the timeline somewhere for somebody else to try...

Well, I have come to a small breakthrough in my project.  I spoke with Adobe TS and they insisted it was a corrupt file in the timeline.  I went through the process of deleting files and seeing if it would work.  It turns out that when I deleted the files that were rendered from AE, the project will load and encode as expected.  So, ButchMo, did you render any of your files through AE?

Not a solution yet, but at least you have found the corrupt frames/files that I suggested. That is a giant step, if not for mankind, at least for you.

I thought since it is a music video that you may have processed some of your videos in After Effects, Premiere's companion animation/compositing program in CS4.  One of the files that I generated in AE are what caused my problem which was very similar to yours.

I aint got much to offer except ..I have experienced various "weirdnesses" with AME and encoding at times.

eg. re writing to same file names, fx that wont encode despite the output tab displaying correctly, black bar on the right  of mpegs etc...

    apropos all that...

I see you are previewing the clip as you encode.  Have you tried turning that off ?

Since you seem to have success exporting around 50% of sequence, can you try exporting a workarea starting from mid point of sequence till the end of the sequence and see if it works? There could be some corrupt frames in the second half of the sequence that may be causing the issue.

    Thanks

I know you tried various export formats, but the last couple of screenshots all showed QT with bitrate Foto JPEG. Does the encode failure also happen when you choose a H.264 or MPEG2 standard 1280 x 720 setting, not Foto JPEG? Just one of the standard presets.

AFAIK .MTS is the standard extension for AVCHD material, which can be imported into CS4 without problems (CS3 does not support this) and can even be edited if the PC is powerful enough. So, in principle you don't need to convert these files, but on export you need to choose the delivery format, for instance H.264-BR. I have never worked with AVCHD material and if I can avoid it, never will, so I am not 100% sure.

You could always get the Panasonic encoder (free on their site, not sure where, sorry...maybe someone else will know) and convert the files to DVCProHD and edit with that.  That should solve any playback issues with AVCHD.  Hope that helps!

The Panasonic converter only works with footage from Pana camera's

ButchMo: How did you convert mts to wmvhd?

  • Ann Bens Community Professional 3,572 posts since

I dont say it is but it could be the source of all your trouble: the wmvHD on the timeline.

Not a very good choice to edit wmvHD.

Your pc cannot handle the original files?

    How long is this video?

Which sequence settings did you use for the wmv's and which settings have you got set for

    the mts files?

The Transitions not coming over with a Copy/Paste. Sometimes, the Audio will die too, though you are replacing both the Audio and Video with the original files, so that should not be an issue for you. Just wanted to point out the issues with Copy/Paste.

    Good luck,

No. What I am saying is that Transitions seldom transfer with Copy/Paste. Others might be suggesting a do-over, but I just wanted to point out that you have observed is what most of us experience.

    Good luck,

    Error compiling movie.

This is often indicative of either a gap in the Video Timeline, or perhaps a bad Asset.

For the former, I'd zoom in on the Timeline horizontally, and probably a bit vertically. Hit the Home key, and then PageDn, to step, Clip by Clip, and watch the CTI (Current Time Indicator w/ the attached red Edit Line). The CTI should jump from Clip to Clip with no "pause," or "hiccup." If you see it seem to hesitate, check that spot very, very carefully. It could well be that with the Copy/Paste, you left a Clip, say one Frame away from another one. Gaps can cause Compiling to fail, though not always.

For a bad Asset search, I'd do a Save_As, incrementing my Project file name. Then Delete half of the Assets and test. If all is good, then put back half, of the half removed, and test. Repeat.

    Good luck,

    Hunt

[Edit] out of curiosity, are you on a Mac, hence the AAC? Also, wonder why 44.1KHz was chosen.

    Hi ButchMo,

I had the same problem with Media Encoder exporting PP projects.  Judging by some of your previous posts, I might be right in assuming that you also have Adobe After Effects.  If you import your PP project in After Effects and render it in the render queue (I recommend Quicktime H.264 on Best quality), I've found it works, since After Effects does not use a separate version of Media Encoder to export compositions/projects.  It may be worth a try.
