Big problems exporting a video in Media Encoder - detailed info

Problems with exporting media through Adobe Media Encoder.
Hi there. I am really confused now, writing this, cause my Premiere CS4 has worked pretty good the year I have had it.
So it has chosen a really bad timing to cause me problems.
I am working on a big musicvideo production. The whole video is now finished, and the labels and the artists are waiting for the video. But I’m facing big problems now. And I have tried everything to solve this, without succeeding.
· When I export the video, the Adobe Media Encoder sometimes waits and waits and waits and waits, and nothing happens.
Screen shot:
· When it does start, if goes to about 20%, and then it interrupts and give me "an unknown" error in the log-file:
Screen shot:
· Sometimes when I open the project , it gives me the following message when importing the media files.
Screen shot:
· The weird thing is that this only happens to the HD version. I have the same video in DV version, in a DV project, and it exports without any problem.
So PLEASE help me here, what shall I do??? I MUST finish this video!
Will your HD project encode to uncompressed avi / mov?
I also tried to nest all the video scenes in to one whole. Then, when I try to render the whole scene, before encoding, it goes to aprocimetaly 40% and working fine...
, and then it gives me this error:
(one time it went to fram 3955 and then it gave me the error. I went back to that frame and everything looks good in the sequence!!)
And here is my log-file with all the attempts I've tried with different settings...

What is your system setup? CPU, memory, disks, video, OS, PR version, etc.
The error encoding can be caused by insufficient space or speed of the disk(s).
I dont think my computer is the one causing problems... Well, at least I hope so. You never know...do you?
I have just formatted and updgraded the computer... like 3 months ago.
It's an
Acer Aspire M5100
8.00 GB of RAM
Windows 7 64-bit
Processorseeds: 4
Total amount of Harddisc space: 1560 GB
C:/ - 107 GB free
I:/ - 118 GB free
L:/ - 807 GB free (brand new internal hard disc with 1TB, where I have everything that has to do with CS4 on)
Graphic card: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro
Tota amount of available graphic card space: 3323 MB
Dedicated graphic card memory: 512 MB
Spilt systemmemory: 2811 MB
Graphic card driver version: 8.632.1.2000
Dirext X 10
Network card: Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Premiere Pro CS4 version: 4.2.1
At least start with updating your video driver.
You mention everything CS4 is on your L drive. Does that include the CS4 programs or were these installed on your C drive?
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
The WD Caviar Black is about the fastest 7200 SATA drive available, but if you install CS4 on another disk or even in a different directory than suggested, it can sometimes cause difficulties. The fact that it is your fastest drive will have only a minor impact on loading times of the program, but it may be better to install the programs in the default directory on your C drive and keep all the rest on your L drive, project, media cache, media etc.
If you want to try that, deactivate, uninstall, run Clean Script CS4 2 or 3 times, reboot between runs, install, activate, update is the proper sequence to do that. It may help, but no guarantees.
Use your I drive as well. It is better to have all 3 disks used for different tasks, than concentrating everything on a single disk, because the speed advantage will quickly turn into a disadvantage when you ask a disk to do multiple things at the same time. Maybe have a look at my Storage guide for hints, but look at it from this perspective:
If you need to transport 2 cases from A to B and you can only fit 1 case in your car at a time, you need 2 round trips. If you fit 1 in your car and 1 on your bicycle (which is slower than your car) being driven at the same time, your final delivery at B may still be quicker than the 2 round trips by car.
So... I've done the following:
Uninstalled CS4.
Re-installed it on C:
I updated the drivers...everything.
The project opens correctly, all the media is loaded properly, and the whole project runs perfect when you play the video.
Then, when exporting it.... It gets to a certain point... and boom... SAME PROBLEM:

I really dont know what more to do.....
Can you successfully encode to for instance MPEG2-DVD or do you get the same error? If so, check your timeline carefully that there are no blank places in your timeline or corrupt frames. If it works, that implies there is something wrong with the WMV settings, although they look OK to me.
ButchMo,
I am not going to be much help but I think our problems are related. I think Media Encoder or Dynamic Link has somehow corrupted your file. I was going to re-install as well but think I will hold up for now... here's my link if you got time to waste.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/594481?tstart=0
Good luck with it and I will keep an eye out to see if you get it solved.
Curtis
Harm.
I've tried to export in quicktime, in uncompressed avi.... everything... same error.
There are no blanks or corrupted files in the timeline.
From the start to the end, the whole video plays perfectly... in CS4 that is....
You really got me stumped here. Can you try to nest this sequence in a new one and try again and if that does not work, create a new project and import the existing sequence into this new project. Just to make sure your project is not corrupted in some way.
Harm, I would be willing to bet that neither of those will work. I tried this with my problem as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed for him though!
If that is the case I'm out of suggestions on how to solve this. If you can't encode to any format, be it MPEG2-DVD, WMV, QT or whatever, it is rather difficult to post the timeline somewhere for somebody else to try...
Well, I have come to a small breakthrough in my project. I spoke with Adobe TS and they insisted it was a corrupt file in the timeline. I went through the process of deleting files and seeing if it would work. It turns out that when I deleted the files that were rendered from AE, the project will load and encode as expected. So, ButchMo, did you render any of your files through AE?
Not a solution yet, but at least you have found the corrupt frames/files that I suggested. That is a giant step, if not for mankind, at least for you. ![]()
Right now I went back to convert the source files of the videoshoot one more time (.mts to HD .wmv)
Cause maybe last time I converted them, something went wrong in a file.
Cause when I at first tried with DV...it worked...
So, Im converting them to HD now again.
Then, Im going to try again. Update to come in an hour or so.
Thrill Media wrote:
....So, ButchMo, did you render any of your files through AE?
Sorry, but I dont understand your question really? Can you explain more?
I always render everything in the timeline, before I export a project.
I thought since it is a music video that you may have processed some of your videos in After Effects, Premiere's companion animation/compositing program in CS4. One of the files that I generated in AE are what caused my problem which was very similar to yours.
Oh, I see. No, I havent been using AE at all!
An update:
- i went back to the source files, the MTS files, and converted them once more, to the WMV HD files.
- then, I renderred some red lines in the project, that occured after the new converting.
- I started the export, in quicktime format.
It went to aprocimately 45-50%:
It went really far this time.... I almost thought it was going to work now!!
And then.....

So please... help me... Im starting to feel helpless!
Next try:
- I started a new CS4 project
- I imported all the video and audio files
- I opened the "problem project" and copied the rest of the files in the Project window, such as titles etc.
- I opened the new project and pasted them there
- I opened the "problem project" again and copied everything in the timeline
- I opened the new project and pasted everything in the new timeline
- Everything imported correctly. It was just the redline in the whole timeline, so now I am renderring the whole time line, and at this moment its at 22% and its renderring...
To be continued...
I aint got much to offer except ..I have experienced various "weirdnesses" with AME and encoding at times.
eg. re writing to same file names, fx that wont encode despite the output tab displaying correctly, black bar on the right of mpegs etc...
apropos all that...
I see you are previewing the clip as you encode. Have you tried turning that off ?
shooternz wrote:

Yes, I have tried both with and without the preview! ![]()
Update:
- the new sequence renderred correctly BUT after it renderred, the CS4 froze, and I had to shut it down. I managed to save the project after the renderring though. So Im going to reboot the computer now, open the new project, and try to encode it.
I can't believe this... it went to aprox 50-55%... I thought it was going to make it... But no.... SAME PROBLEM...

I'm so helpless now....
Since you seem to have success exporting around 50% of sequence, can you try exporting a workarea starting from mid point of sequence till the end of the sequence and see if it works? There could be some corrupt frames in the second half of the sequence that may be causing the issue.
Thanks
Aurobinda
I know you tried various export formats, but the last couple of screenshots all showed QT with bitrate Foto JPEG. Does the encode failure also happen when you choose a H.264 or MPEG2 standard 1280 x 720 setting, not Foto JPEG? Just one of the standard presets.
One question:
The original files from the camcorder are .MTS files.
- To what format should I convert these, to obtain the best HD quality? Since I can't import .MTS files to CS4, right?
Thanx for this OT question.
AFAIK .MTS is the standard extension for AVCHD material, which can be imported into CS4 without problems (CS3 does not support this) and can even be edited if the PC is powerful enough. So, in principle you don't need to convert these files, but on export you need to choose the delivery format, for instance H.264-BR. I have never worked with AVCHD material and if I can avoid it, never will, so I am not 100% sure.
You could always get the Panasonic encoder (free on their site, not sure where, sorry...maybe someone else will know) and convert the files to DVCProHD and edit with that. That should solve any playback issues with AVCHD. Hope that helps!
The Panasonic converter only works with footage from Pana camera's

I used the Alive HD Video Converter, that I got from my friend. It was his company that did this program:
Some screenshots
At this moment I had to take a break from this.. Cause Im out of clues...
My friend and co-director of this video is a very succesful director and he has worked with this for over 20 years. Guess what program he is working with? Premiere Pro 1.5 !! He absolutaly hates the CS4, and calls it the Vista of Adobe... Is he correct?
He will help me with this tomorrow. He says he will find the way around this problem, like exporting it frame by frame or something... I have been trying over 40 hours last 4 days... And right now Im out of fuel...
I dont say it is but it could be the source of all your trouble: the wmvHD on the timeline.
Not a very good choice to edit wmvHD.
Your pc cannot handle the original files?
How long is this video?

I have also tried working with Quicktime files... Same error.
Well, when I started to work on this video 2 months ago, I didnt know that MTS files worked with CS4. I tried it before, and it didnt work. I guess that they fixed it later with the updates.
I tried to open a new project, and copy and paste the whole timeline from the old, and then replace the wmv files with the source mts files. But guess what? The video transitions disappeared!
The video is 5:38 long.
Which sequence settings did you use for the wmv's and which settings have you got set for
the mts files?
Ann Bens wrote:

Windows Media
Custom
Codec: Winows Media Video 9 Advanced
Endocing passes: Two
Birtrate mode: Variable Unconstrained
1280x720
Frame rate: 25
Square pixels (1.0)
Average birtrate: 5300
These are the settings I ALWAYS use when working with different videos.
And about the mts files, you mean what project I open, the new one?
Well, then I take the HDV 1080p 25 project.
The Transitions not coming over with a Copy/Paste. Sometimes, the Audio will die too, though you are replacing both the Audio and Video with the original files, so that should not be an issue for you. Just wanted to point out the issues with Copy/Paste.
Good luck,
Hunt

So, you are saying if I want to work with MTS, then I have to start over? (which I defenitely wont do... Not after 2 months of work...)
No. What I am saying is that Transitions seldom transfer with Copy/Paste. Others might be suggesting a do-over, but I just wanted to point out that you have observed is what most of us experience.
Good luck,
Hunt

This is often indicative of either a gap in the Video Timeline, or perhaps a bad Asset.
For the former, I'd zoom in on the Timeline horizontally, and probably a bit vertically. Hit the Home key, and then PageDn, to step, Clip by Clip, and watch the CTI (Current Time Indicator w/ the attached red Edit Line). The CTI should jump from Clip to Clip with no "pause," or "hiccup." If you see it seem to hesitate, check that spot very, very carefully. It could well be that with the Copy/Paste, you left a Clip, say one Frame away from another one. Gaps can cause Compiling to fail, though not always.
For a bad Asset search, I'd do a Save_As, incrementing my Project file name. Then Delete half of the Assets and test. If all is good, then put back half, of the half removed, and test. Repeat.
Good luck,
Hunt
[Edit] out of curiosity, are you on a Mac, hence the AAC? Also, wonder why 44.1KHz was chosen.
Hi ButchMo,
I had the same problem with Media Encoder exporting PP projects. Judging by some of your previous posts, I might be right in assuming that you also have Adobe After Effects. If you import your PP project in After Effects and render it in the render queue (I recommend Quicktime H.264 on Best quality), I've found it works, since After Effects does not use a separate version of Media Encoder to export compositions/projects. It may be worth a try.
