I can't get ExternalInterface to work!

I have published and tested the sample ExtInt.FLA, uploaded it to a server and tested. It WORKS.

I copy all the scripts and content of ExtInt into my own project, as well as copying the JS from the HTML page too. Publish, upload and test. Does NOT work.

When I test locally, I put a TRACE in the main button function in both the example movie and in my own. The trace in the example executes every button click. The trace in my own project (with the EXACT same copied stuff) does not. I am beside myself and ripping my hair out trying to sort out this issue. The scripts are identical and yes, my project is set to AS2.0 and Flash 8, just like the example file.

Any ideas?

    You did this, right:

    import flash.external.*;

    I can't think of why it wouldn't work. It works fine for me, outside of the
    sample you mentioned, so it's got to be something you're missing.

    Yes, I have the import in the same frame, before any of the related scripts.

    As I see it, there's two problems going on.
    1. The button script is not even executing. Again, this is a straight copy out of the example file, so there's no reason it does not work.
    Script:

    send_button.addEventListener("click", doClick);
    function doClick(){
    trace("this one works");
    // Call JavaScript function jsFunc
    ExternalInterface.call("jsFunc", out_ti.text);
    };

    (Yes, I copied the button named "send_button" too)

    2. In the direct method, like this, it doesn't seem to call the function either:
    on(release){
    ExternalInterface.call("jsFunc", out_ti.text);
    }

    3. A direct call to the function using getURL instead... WORKS.

    Partial success, but still confusing:

    I put this directly in the timeline:

    ExternalInterface.call("jsFunc", "rewrwerwe");

    And it successfully called the function. Now why wouldn't the same thing on a button work????
