Hey, I am not sure this will help, as my husband helped me (you can always call B&N nook...I think the number is 1-800-thenook...or something like that...just go to http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/support/?cds2Pid=30195 to get the number).  I think if you "registered" your nook when you very first purchased it, you have to have the same login name and password on both the Nook login sight AND ADE site).  All my husband did was "uninstall" or "delete" sorry, not quite sure which one, and then reinstall ADE.  That seemed to fix it.  Man, I am not sure if the nook was hooked up at the time of the reinstall...I know how unbelievably frustrating it is...I was in a HORRIBLE mood for two days because of it.  Try uninstalling ADE without the nook hooked up to your computer first.  Then install ADE and make sure the login and password are the same on both sites.  I am not sure, but then hook up your nook to the computer and try opening ADE.

Man, I feel your pain...I hope this helps some.  Good luck.  Seriously, call the B&N Nook people.  They know what you are going through...I have a Mac too.   Take care, Linderloo

Don't mean to send so many messages to you, but by "disconnecting your nook from your computer, I mean "unmount" or eject.  From "finder" look on the upper left hand side of the finder window...there will be something like mac hard drive....nook...click on the little arrow (I think it is pointing "up" to indicate ejecting it.

Last message, I swear...here is the phone number for B&N nook:  1.800.843.2665.  Call them, explain what is going on.  It may take a while so leave a little time to do this.  I know they had me on the right track when my husband "took over"!

All the best...and I am getting library books on my nook now...don't give up...it CAN be done!

    Take care, Linda

I didn't have to reinstall ADE on my Mac for it to work but like I mentioned earlier I did have to connect to a PC in order to see the hidden ADE file on my Nook so I could delete it (in my case, my Nook is a refurb and the ADE file probably contained mismatched information).  Also, I do think it's VERY important that your B&N username (email) is the same as your ADE username.  Hope this helps some.

Thank you everyone for your responses and help.  I spent an hour on a chat with Barnes and Noble help.  Went through all sorts of steps and fixes and finally had to reset the nook to the default settings by pressing and holding the power button for 20 seconds 6 times in a row.  It didn't work because the nook was still registered to me.  So, I unregistered the nook and then started the whole 20 seconds 6 times process again.  BUT...it got stuck on the installation of new software screen which should come up after this process.  I was VERY frustrated at this point.  So, I called Barnes and Noble.  He told me to shut it off and start again and it started the installation process again.  It restarted and I registered the nook and connected it to the computer and started ADE.  I FINALLY got the register your new device in ADE this time.  I never got it before!  I was able to drag and drop the book to my nook.  Then ejected nook and went to my documents and was able to open the book.  SUCCESS!  I'm not sure what was causing the hang up to not allow my nook to authorize, but after many steps and tries it's working!  Thanks again for all the suggestions.  Good luck to all who are still having issues.

Yeah!  It worked!  Thanks for the post - I was ready to smash all electronics and then send a few nasty emails to Adobe and

    B & N.

Blaarg! I had this problem a year and a half ago, when I first got the Nook when it first came out. Went through all of this with B&N, the library tech guy, my brilliant husband and finally got it figured out (with NO help from Adobe, thank you very little). Had been working fabulously since then; all the little icons popped on right when they should, all the drag-n-dropping worked fine, I was up to my happy eyeballs in library books.

Then Adobe made me do an "update". I've been on here 2 hours, have done everything in this thread (thank you, Tom and other smart people), and it's STILL not recognizing my device. Sigh. Calling B&N.

Thank you for letting me vent. Carry on.

I've spent hours reading all these posts and tearing my hair.  Deleting files,

rebooting, you name it.  Finally, I opened up my documents on the Nook and there was my book.  It wasn't in the regular B&N library.  Who knew?  Finally good to go.

This is excellent advice, as I too have been unsuccessfully been trying to borrow library books on my nook for a year! I still am not having any luck because Adobe Digital Editions says my nook has a different password and I am not sure what that is, how would you find an adobe digital editions folder on the nook?  Sorry if this is a stupid question, but today is the day I am determined to finally be able to borrow books on the nook, and this is the second hour in a row I have been trying to accomplish this!

Thanks for all the help with getting my nook excepted by ADE, this is the second nook, first one got ill. So I was frustrated twice, not fun. I followed instuctions from this forum and got it up and running, love using the library. But with this new nook there is still a problem, it does not say this device is not autrhorized, when I try to open a book it simply tells me it can't open the book. Can any one help out with this problem. I would dearly love to at least finish my started library book.  thanks

My local library tech support for ebooks was very helpful.  You might try that.  I talked to a real person

who had obviously solved lots of different issues.

    Good luck!

If you are a Mac user, follow the excellent fix described by Conaty! (#76) After several hours trying to figure out how to get the library books onto my Nook, I tried what Conaty suggested and was finally able to authorize my Nook with ADE and download the books to the Nook.  Thanks again, to the OP and Conaty; this was the most helpful forum I found for this issue.

This problem may be solved for the rest of you but I'm still struggling.  I have followed all the advice here and on the Adobe instructions.   I had already downloaded ADE and authorized my Mac computer, over a year ago. So I first turned that on, and then plugged in my Nook.  I'd bought a book this week on line from EPUB.   I opened it with ADE;  it appears in library but the image won't drag.  I can read the book on the screen but the second  I go to the bookshelf list where I see my Nook, I lose the book.  This seems to be to be behaving as though I didn't authorize my computer, although it tells me I'm authorized, gives my correct address, and offers no opportunity to make changes.  So I dumped this ADE in the trash and downloaded a new version.  Darn if it didn't turn out to be exactlly the same, complete with authorization and the new shelf I had added.  So what do I do now?

Did you try Conaty's fix (#76)?  It is linked in my message just above yours.  I have a Windows PC laptop and was able to fix the problem there and then finally I could authorize my Nook on the Mac. Do you have access to a PC?

In case that is not the problem, you also need to look for the "My Documents" folder

in your Nook library.  Books imported through ADE do not appear to show up in the regular Nook library.

Open "My Library/Go to my Documents"

I was working 3 threads trying to solve this and had tried evrything except the PC solution, up to now and was lined up to try that later today.  I checked for book in Documents. I reloaded ADE, redownloaded the book into ADE, checked authorization of Mac and ADE  and registration of Nook. I tried every possible sequence of turning off and on ADE and Nook.   Both my nook and book showed in the library along with all the 20 other e-books there.  But no power on earth was going to get that book to drag. I called Adobe.  I had an on-line chat with them.  They promised that someone would get back to me. Last night I took screen shots in hopes that would help--both the message that said the book couldn't be copied and the one that said it could.  Elves must have come in the night!  This morning, pretty as you please, the book dropped into my Nook, to be found as predicted, in the Documents folder.  An earlier posting had related this sort of time lapse success.  I admit I was dubious--thought that person must have just overlooked something--until it happened to me.  But all is now good and the book is readable.  Thank you for your suggestions.

Glad you solved the problem. I know it's frustrating and it took me many hours to figure out how to get the books I could see in ADE onto my Nook.

They need to find ways to simplify ereaders and ebooks if it's ever going to take off on a large scale.  Many people would give up before spending hours and hours on forums trying to figure it out.

    trouble is,

    1.  I've downloaded books successfully using ADE before .  The only thing different about this time is that the book came from a dutch language EPUB.  But getting such books is the only reason I didn't get a Kindle.  So it's important.

    2.  I didn't learn a thing that can help next time this happens, except maybe to stop trying and wait.

It is obviously a clumsy system.  I'm sure there'll be an update or patch before long.

The more exchanges about Nooks I see, the more I think that I'll buy

something else next time.  I wouldn't be surprised that, given the

relationship between B&N and the Nook, there's something special in the

software on the Nook that we have to deal with when we try to get ADE to

work with it.  But, I am the suspicious kind anyway....

I don't know if it's really a Nook issue.  I think the problem is all the different formats, programs, and devices for ebooks out there.  I also have problems doing lots of things on a Mac (like getting the nook authorized for ADE) that I don't run into with PC's because most programming is still geared towards PCs.  Ebooks and ereaders are still a fairly nascent technology; hopefully, the market will work towards some sort of standardization and simplification as we continue to move forward.

What "hidden" file needs to be deleted? There is a folder on my nook named .adobe-digital-editions which contains 1 file named device which was created in 1999. There is another folder named digital editions (created 2 days ago when I tried to make library borrowing work with my new email) which contains a file named manifest and two folders named annotations and thumbnails.

My story: changed my email, then changed it on my BN account which messed up my nook so severly B&N replaced it. (FYI if you ever change the email on your B&N account unregister your nook first, then change BN account email, then re-register the nook). I have managed to have the new email in my adobe account. My adobe, BN and nook emails all match, I can download epub book to computer and read there, I can transfer it to the nook. It appears in my documents on the nook but when I try to read it, the nook says not authorized and won't open it.

What can I do now ? I am fast approaching my frustration limit.

Found the answer - sorry for not reading from the first post.

After I got to the point I described above.

Plugged Nook into my PC. Using winddows I changed the folder names by inserting a character in the front of the  name instead of deleting so I could easily reverse my actions. Then ejected and unplugged it. Started up digit editions, downloaded a public library book, plugged in the nook again. DE asked me to authorize the nook.

Transferred the book to the nook (drag & drop). Ejected and unplugged yet again. Voila book opens just as expected.

When I next connected nook to the PC, used windows and sure enough DE athorization had recreated the files I had renamed ie DE did not see the files on the nook. So indeed my solution was delete file .adobe-digital- editions and the folder named digital editions and then DE 'thought' I had connected a new nook.

I have the original Nook. The email at BN, Adobe and on the Nook seem to need to be the same. The Adobe password does not have to be the same as your BN password.

I purchased a Nook while in Spain, however failed to authorize it prior to leaving the U.S.  Will I be able to authorize it here.  I will be in Spain for two months and would like to be able to use it here. Cek Kanunu

I realize I cannot download updates nor books directly from the B&N Web page but would like use it for other ebooks.

I don't think that your physical location has much, if anything, to do with

your interactions with the US website.

Tom:  Awesome! We had the same exact problemn with ADE not recognizing our Nook and therefore not providing a prompt to authorize the Nook (it did allow us previously to authorize our computer). Our computer recognized the Nook as an external input but not ADE. Once we deleted the file from the Nook as you indicated, and then reattached the Nook using the USB cable after opening up ADE, it worked perfectly -- asking us to authorize the Nook device.  We have now downloaded two ebooks from our county library. Thanks so much!
