CS5 error message after installing Genuine Fractals 6

May 24, 2010 2:57 AM

I've just installed Genuine Fractals 6 into CS5 and when I launch PS, I get the following error message - see screen grab.

I've now removed GF but I still get the error message. Anyone know how to rectify this?

I assume that's a new release, touted to be CS5-compatible.  I haven't tried that one yet.

However, I've been able to get the 6.0.4 Genuine Fractals code to work with CS5 by copying appropriate files.  Notably there are a number of DLLs that are copied both to several areas under CS5, including the Photoshop main folder as well as the plug-ins folder.

Check to see if the following files or folders are present under any of these areas "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5" (32 bit Windows) or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5" and "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)" (64 bit Windows):

    Folder:

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\Panels\onOne

    Files:

    CoreFoundation.dll
    glut32.dll
    glut64.dll
    icudt42.dll
    icuin42.dll
    icuuc42.dll
    onOneGF6StandardCheck.dll
    onOneToolbox2.dll
    onOneWelcomeDialog.dll
    OnOneWidgets.dll
    Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\GFAutomation.8li
    Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\GFFilter.8li
    Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\GFFormat.8li
    Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\onOneActivationToolbox.dll
    Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\onOneWelcomeDialog.dll
    Plug-ins\Panels\onOne\onOne.jsx
    Plug-ins\Panels\onOne\onOne.swf

I am not absolutely sure all of these are Genuine Fractals files, but they do share the exact same time and date on my system.  Copying these files to my CS5 folder prior to there being an OnOne installer for Genuine Fractals that knows about Photoshop CS5 worked to get Genuine Fractals working in CS5.

CoreFoundation.DLL is an Apple DLL, probably part of QuickTime (or iTunes).

My guess is that one of the plugins is trying to access QuickTime, but either QuickTime is not installed correctly, or the plugin needs some bug fixes.

Any solution to this issue?  Just go the same error after installing the OnOne Suite update.

    Thanks!

Since my prior message I have installed 6.0.6 into Photoshop CS5 on Windows 7 x64 and I do not see the error you are describing.  Perhaps there are several different CoreFoundation.dlls on your system, and Genuine Fractals is accessing the wrong one.

Is yours the 6.0.6 version?  And are you seeing it in 32 bit Photoshop or 64 bit or both?

    What is your operating system?

Sounds like their installer didn't remove everything it installed.

If it can help you to remove all the files, these are the files it installed into my Photoshop 32 bit folder, all having a Mod date of 5/31/2010.  Note that there are several more beyond the list shown above:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\CoreFoundation.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\glut32.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\icudt42.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\icuin42.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\icuuc42.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\onOneGF6StandardCheck.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\onOneToolbox2.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\onOneWelcomeDialog.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\OnOneWidgets.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\GFAutomation.8li"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\GFFilter.8li"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\GFFormat.8li"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\GFStandardMenu.onli.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\onOneActivationToolbox.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin\onOneWelcomeDialog.dll"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Panels\onOne\onOne Palette Config.txt"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Panels\onOne\onOne.jsx"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Panels\onOne\onOne.swf"

Make sure all of the above are removed.

Also, you should try resetting your prefs (Ctrl-Shift-Alt immediately after starting Photoshop).

Thank you for your feedback.  I am on  Windows 7 x64.  In my case I have the whole Suite 5 and I am trying to install the 5.1 update to compatibility with CS5.  The only thing that shows up in PS is Mask Pro after my installation.  Maybe there is a conflict here, but I still have PS CS3 installed.

When I installed GF 6.0.6 separately (I don't have the whole suite), it asked specifically which versions of Photoshop I wish to install it into.  Notably I had to run the installer twice, once each for CS5 32 bit and 64 bit.

    PS CS5

    Nik Color Efex Pro 3

    OnOne Bundle 5

    Win 7 x64

    iTunes 10

    Had to copy:

         ASL.dll

         CoreFoundation.dll

         icudt40.dll

         icuin40.dll

         icuuc40.dll

         libdispatch.dll

         objc.dll

         pthreadVC2.dll

    from:     C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

    to:     C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5

    Now, all is well.

And that tells us that your plugin has a dependency on QuickTime and other Apple code.

And that either their installer failed to copy all the needed libraries, or you didn't use the installer and copied only part of the files between versions.

Hadn't changed anything with CS5 or the plugins. Made the mistake of upgrading iTunes.

Sometimes I have wonder whether Apple's software for PC doesn't cause problems just to make the PC environment less friendly and subtly steer people toward buying Apple computers.

The inability to discern between different versions of DLLs used to be a big problem with Windows PCs - but this was back years ago!  It was called "DLL H ell".  But connecting software to the right DLL has been essentially solved for quite a while with "side by side" technology using manifests, the winsxs folder, and stuff. It simply is no longer a given that a DLL needed by a plug-in, and which is kept in a separate folder, should be interfered with by an upgrade of a completely different application.  That's just bad application and DLL design, and just look who's responsible for those in this case...

Personally I regard Apple's software for PC about half a step above malware.  Not that I don't use some of it.
