Graphic or system display problem

Jun 24, 2010 8:10 AM

When scrubbing sometimes I get multiple remnant red lines from the scrubber left on the screen, when this happens my playback freezes frame then jumps to where the scrubber has stopped.  Closing and restarting PP will help sometimes but other times when I restart PP I get a "cutout" window to my desk top where the welcome window is.  I can mouse over the recent projects and get the cursor to change clicking will open PP but only to a point then I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to close.  Restarting Windows clears problem.

System is

XP Pro 32bit SP3

IntellQ8400 @2.666

only showing 2.75GB of 4 ram

Nvidia 8800 GTS 320mb

Any thoughts?

Every now and then, I get those Edit Line (red line extending down from the CTI) too. In my case, they have never caused a playback issue, and only "look" tacky. I do not know what elements contribute to that - working too long on a Project without reboot? It seems to happen with long Sequences, but I've had longer ones, that did not exhibit this issue.

FWIW - I'm using nVidia Quadro FX-4500 - 512MB, with an older driver. When I recently experienced this, I did update then, but after a bit, it did happen again. Now, unlike the advice that I give to so many, I am not one to constantly update my video driver, until I have an issue. Then, that's the first thing that I do. I'm usually a few drivers behind, and always keep the older ones around, just in case I need a roll-back.

Wish that I had something to offer, other than "update the video driver and test."

Good luck, and at least you have company - some times, and with a PrPro 2.0 user.

This red lines thing is a known issue; truly annoying, but relatively innocuous.

We have not been able to reproduce the problem reliably, so anything you can add about your machine would be helpful, as would word of any positive results you see.

In my case, the workstation is a dual Duo-core 3.2 GHz Intel w/ 4GB Corsair Pro RAM w/ 3GB switch, XP-Pro SP3, PrPro 2.0 and nVidia Quadro FX 4500 - 512MB w/ drivers about 3 - 4 back. The I/O is 4 1TB SATA II's and 2x ATA-100 1TB HDD's. The OS, programs and part of the Page File are on C:\, Media on D:\, Projects and Scratch Disks on E:\, part of Page File (and PS's Scratch Disk 1) on F:\. Exports are to G:\, (along with PS Scratch Disk 2) and SmartSound and other Assets on H:\ (with PS Scratch Disk 3).

As mentioned, there do not seem to be common elements. It happens with small Projects, sometimes and also with large Projects, sometimes. Seems rather random. It can happen with a fresh, cold boot, or after working for many hours. The edit lines just seem to hang along the way, but seldom with any consequence. They just look odd.

Hope that helps, but then I am using very old OS's and old PrPro versions.

Sometimes, my wife thinks that I have a "never empty wine glass," and always comments, "did you JUST fill that back up?"

Other times, she thinks that she has one of those too...

I got a few of those remnants on my laptop with a fairly short and simple Timeline/Sequence. The little pieces just sat there, but I got no stoppages, and was doing Audio work with Audio Mixer, so I needed full, and complete playback.

Your card is perfectly adequate for CS4 and can handle dual monitors just fine. For CS5 things are different with MPE, but that is another story.
