I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and acroread (acrobat reader 9.0)
I want to activate Read Out Loud when I click View -> Activate Read Out Loud, it seems to load the document again however fails to read anything.
So I checked in Edit -> Preferences -> Reader
All options for Driver and Voices were greyed. Does anyone know how to add these things (Drivers and Voices)
and where to get them?
I suppose thats the problem with no voice, please correct me if I'm wrong.
I've even installed festival and espeech but that doesn't really help getting driver and voices for acroread.
I'll really appreciate any help, I read a lot of pdfs (books and papers) everyday and readoutloud is good option but not working for me in Ubuntu.
P.S. I've medibuntu repository added but that doesn't show acroread-speech-plugin in repository and I checked through Help menu of acrobat it shows ReadOutLoad.api is installed and loaded properly
So meanwhile I installed few programs like festival, espeak etc. with no help
Then I installed libgnome-speech7 and libgnome-speech7-dev (as suggested by acroread in repository) well that didn't help either I even tried a restart.
Finally I found all packages over here http://debian-multimedia.org/dists/stable/non-free/binary-i386/ but downloading them doesn't work good as acroread9.3.3 depends on l10n-en package and vice-versa. So I can't install them either.
Anyone else have any other opinion?
So I got it working, with espeak gnome speech driver, there is option for festival gnome speech driver as well however it doesn't work. And I didn't see these option immediately after installing espeak or festival. I think I needed a restart.
Now as I got it working does anyone know good voice sources for espeak or even festival (if it works). I don't fancy listening to a robot-like voice.
One more thing I wondered was simple Document Viewer can save last reading state but acroread can't however Edit -> Preferences -> Documents -> Restore Last View.... and you got it -- I know I may be the only one who was dumb not to notice yet but still thought I should put it here.
I hope that you are still there ...
I have the same problem (as in your firs post). All options for Driver and Voices were greyed.
I have espeak, espeech installed...
Can you tell me how you made it working ?
Do you know maybe how to use some other, better (not robot like) voices ??
Hey check http://hailubuntu.blogspot.com/2010/08/acrobat-read-out-loud.html I've blogged about it back when I used it, not sure if its still working for newer versions of Ubuntu.
Let me know how it goes for you I'll update it accordingly.
And even I searched for better voices but couldn't find them will let u know if I come across any.
I found much better voices than espeach. Look for mbrola.
But I still cant use arobat read-out-loud.
I did everything you suggested...
Do you have maybe any idea how to fix it ?
Problem is still the same: All options for Driver and Voices are greyed.
