Links Keep Embedding Themselves

Any idea why links in Illustrator keep embedding themselves? Im certainly not doing it by choice.

Turn off Include Linked Files in the Save dialog.

De-select "Include Linked Files" when you 'Save-As'.

Thanks. Youd think I would have noticed that after 15 years! I think what threw me off is that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't--I never change the setting.
