I'm doing this SD DVD wedding project for a friend. I'm using an Intel iMac and Adobe Production Suite CS3. The size is 6.62 GB so I used a dual layer Memorex (yes, I know I should've used Verbatim...) and built it using Encore set at dual layer - 3x write speed - automatic layer break.
The project consists of a main menu and 3 submenus, Wedding, Reception and Extras. The Wedding and Reception menus work with two timelines - wedding (about 40min) and reception (about 1hr 5min) respectively. The Extras part has a number of short separate timelines, each about 5min. The Wedding and Reception timelines have numerous chapter points and chapter playlists associated with the menus which include a Play All button.(a chapter playlist that plays all the chapters on the timeline) Some of the chapter points are listed as click-and-go-there chapter buttons in the menus while other chapter points are only on the timeline so viewer can skip forward or back using their remote.
At this point we are having a freeze/skip problem in the Reception area and I'm pretty sure it has to do with the dvd brand or the layer break or a combination thereof. From experience and research I understand the manual layer break option in Encore CS3 is basically non-functioning. Lot's of discussions online suggest outputting to a folder and using Windows-only freeware programs like Imgburn to set a manual break and build the final DVD...or DVD Studio Pro etc.
I'm wondering what I can do with a Mac only system and a cannot-buy-anything budget and without too much total-rebuilding project-in-another-program gymnastics to set a manual break point in my dual layer project and burn it to a dual layer DVD and have at the most only a barely perceptible hiccup, which seems to be expected norm. (and planning on using a better brand than memorex - obviously a first step)
If possible I would also like to avoid the prospect of making every chapter a separate timeline, etc as I saw suggested somewhere. I see how this might work well...but my time is running out to go to that length.
Any other suggestions or hints? I may be missing something in my Encore set up as well. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or helpful experience.
What options for setting a layer break are there in Toast?
You can try exporting the project from Encore as a DVD Folder, and then use that to make a DVD-Video in Toast.
Also, with +R DL discs, beware of older players that do not understand the discs - I have a couple here that will play Layer 0 of a DVD+R DL disc with no trouble but will not refocus to layer 1, and it won't look at DVD-R DL at all.
Hope this helps.
