CS4 Jerky Fast Forward

I had this problem before when I updated Pr form its original version 4.0 to 4.1.

I am using a Dell XPS (from 7/09) and everything was fine until I forgot about this issue and let an automatic update take place.

Now I have the jerky fast forward and backward back again.

Last time I had to uninstall the whole CS4 Suite and reinstall the original version to get rid of the problem.

Please tell me if you know of this problem and is there a work around without reinstalling (if that still works).

 

What I expect to see when I FF through a video file is a smooth FF through the video.

What I get is hesitation, skipping frames, and jerking untill after a few annoying seconds it settles down to good fast motion but by then I have missed the point in the video I was seaeching for.

    It appears to show lacking hardware that just is not able to keep up. However, why not update to 4.2.1 to see if that resolves your issue? If it does not, report back with your hardware specs and the source material and the project'/sequence settings.

    I am now at 4.2.1.

    The automatic update took place a few days ago taking me from 4.0 to 4.2.1

    After the update was installed I went back to editing a project I had been working on and I immediately noticed the problem.

    It was like a nightmare re-lived.

    And then I remembered that it was the update to 4.1 that caused the problem 1.5 years ago.

    I am assuming that 4.2.1 has the same "feature" as 4.1 that causes me this problem.

    I was hoping that someone would reply, "I had that same problem updating and I did "this" to the Preferences and it works as well as it did before."

    Otherwise I will have to uninstall and reinstall all of the CS5 suite soon.

     

    To help with confusion with my other recent problem, I have an older Dell running CS4 and a newer PC I built to run CS5.

    I am using the older Dell because the newer PC has a bad disk in RAID 5 that I am about to replace.

    I use my 1.5 year old Dell 435T as a backup CS4 video and photo editor.

    The specs follow:

     

    Processor, I7-940, 2.93, 8MB Bloomfield, C0
    Card, Graphics, (RV770, P117A) 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4850
    RAM 6GB

     

    When I run Premiere Pro CS4 (4.2) the fast forward video is not smooth as it used to be with 4.0.

    It is so irratating that I cannot stand to use it.

    I just updated the graphics card driver to its latest version but that had no effect on my problem.

    Now I am faced with the posibility of uninstalling CS4 and reinstalling it back to 4.0 or trying something else.

    I am wondering if I can buy a better ot different graphic card.

    Does anyone have a suggestion for a new graphics card (one that is more compatable with CS4)?

    Your CPU, memory and video card should not be a bottleneck. Your disk setup may be a bottleneck.

     

    When you start PR, how many processes are running (use Process Explorer to post a screenshot)? If more than 40 - 50, it is time to start tuning: Adobe Forums: Guide for installing and tuning a Vista... which says Vista but also applies to Win7.

     

    Have you cleaned up your disks and defragmented them?

     

    What is your source material, what codec?

     

    As long as you use CS4, it makes no sense to upgrade the video card. It will make no difference in performance, only in your wallet.

    I agree, but would check out the video driver, and if a newer one is available, install that.

     

    Sounds like the HDD system, but the requested details might lead to other thoughts, and suggestions.
