We've gotten a few reports of crashes when applying the Directional Blur effect (and modifying its properties) in After Effects CS5 on a 12-core Mac. See this post for details and a proposed workaround.
Please use this thread for feedback on this crash and the proposed workaround. Is it working for you? Do you have this crash on a different system?
just wanted to add that I am indeed having this crash (12 core mac, directional blur). I submited a report. I have not tried the fix as I don't want to remove multithreading for obvious reasons. thanks for working on this

Had problems with crashing in CS3 on 12-core Mac Pro after applying Directional Blur. Couldn't even get the project open to remove it, but your workaround saved the day. Thank you! I've restored the Mthread.plugin and will now try a different blur.
I'm having the problem with CS4 as well (and yes, 12-Core Mac, OS 10.6.6, ATI Radeon HD 5870, 16GB RAM)
The "Unexpected data type" error bug and the crash with Directional Blur have been fixed in the After Effects CS5 (10.0.2) update.
Let us know after you've installed the update whether this is working for you.
