Director's Future - Live Chat with Adobe

Mar 10, 2011 4:28 AM

Hi all,

I haven’t posted here in a while : )

I’ve been speaking to Krishnan from the Adobe Director team. He is keen to have an open discussion about Director, it future and expectations of the community. This will be a live discussion where any question can be put on the table. Don’t know how detailed the answers will be. However, it will be an opportunity for anyone interested to speak directly to the key engineers and product management team for Adobe Director.

I have long petitioned for Adobe to engage with the community more and be more open with what they are doing. I encourage everyone to be part of this discussion to show that you believe this to be true as well.

Krishnan has just got back from GDC and will be speaking with people at his end to organise a time for this meeting. If anyone wants to suggest a good way of voting for the most convenient time, let me know. For now, watch this space and I will post updates.

Regards
Dean

    Hello Dean,

    thank you for this Information!

If someone can not take part in this conference, may be You can resume here some important questions?

    1. Is Director developing going on?

    2. If yes - when will Director12 launched and which new features it will have?

    3. If not - how long want Adobe distribute dir11 and shockwave player? Or maybe Adobe want to sell Dir to another company?

    regards
    Even

    Hi Dean.

    Wenesday 6 April.

I think that you'll send us a link for the chat? Will you?

Why you don't cross post this topic also in Director online?

    Thanks a lot.

    My question:

Does Abobe Know that with xtra and Activex controls Director is the best tool for Kiosk applications and perhaps the easy way to build stand alone software?

it seems that Director is only 3d.

    The question are:

    - own 3D engnine control (good) or just embedded Flash player "steered" from Director (bad).

    - own advanced text object (good) or just embedded Flash text "steered" from Director (bad).

    - support for multithreating and multicore

If Adobe is going to move Director in good way - fine but if they are just looking for a $1000 "Flash support" - let them go to hell !

It's 18:54 here in the UK, so not sure of the time difference. I am guessing it's early morning your side of the pond.

Looking forward to the Live Chat.

    Many Thanks

I don't suppose it would be at all possible to get a simple yes or no answer from them at this point?  I'm not too concerned if they continue with Director per se, but is there any inclination that they will support fully functional Lingo scripting and import of existing Director projects in a near future revision of Flash/AIR or other platform?  Sure, it would be nice to know if we can hope for multi-touch support and iOS publishing capabilities, but the continued retraction of this dangling carrot of answers is a little nerve wracking.  I've been sitting on a project for the better part of a year, worried that Director has been shelved and looking for any reasonable alternative.

That being said, thanks for organizing the meeting, Dean and Adobe.  It's great to see the commitment to the community.

So, any insights at all before next week?

for those of us that can not attend next week, would it be possible for Adobe to record the meeting and then

post , so we can view it later?

Dean , thank you for all your hard work arranging this meeting

    Hi

I joined the chat a little late - got held up.

Is there news as to when the new version will be released and if so, will there be or are there plans for SWF export?

Will the chat be summarised and posted here?

    Thanks

    Tristan

I suppose I should be happy that the webcast happened at all, but somehow I am not entirely inspired by the "business focus" and apparent lack of commitment to the development community.

    Dang.

I thought Direct_L was closed now? Anyhow, is it possible you can post summary here or maybe on http://director-online.com perhaps? I was unable to capture the text of the chatroom during the live meeting. Had to log back in several times and lost the cache!

    Thanks

Is there a transcript on-line? Or just an overview of what was said? I managed to miss this.

    >> this release could be a patch rather than a full point update.

    WOW ! - AMAZING :-)

Dean - seriously speaking - can we know at least what bugs thispatch is going to fix?

This is not that stupid question actually as Adobe/Macromedia used to develop Director through adding new (mostly pointless) features but carefully preserving old nasty bugs untouched.

I do not want to say Director is completely useless at the moment, but critical bugs like LDM flaws render Director "sloution of last choise" at the moment. Simply speaking - having faulty LDMs there is no convinient way to make a library of handy "prefabs" what could be recycled in various projects (like Flash components). Simply speaking - bahaviors are not enough - the real time saver are functional prefabs with standarized interfaces. Unless LDM flaws are not fixed, I do not see real interest to do yet another Director project as each time I have to build all functional elements again and again what is time consuming and I am unable to get paid for this any more.

Then - buggy text objects with buggy fonts embedding are disaster. I am really not happy with Adobe's approach "please use Flash text" as this breaks internal harmony in the project. Why the hell, having spending years on Director refactoring, Adobe engineers cannot provide working, solid text feature to Director?

Arghh - I just recall one of my most advanced projects, what was a specialized database (Valentina) driven engineering application faciliating design of cable layout in buildings I completed a few years ago. I spent weeks on interface design full of custom widgets (tabbed pannels, selectable drop lists, sketching tool, helper-calculators, layout preview, etc.) and I sold this for good money what I am unable to get today any more! - Simply speaking because I am unable to convince the customer "such a basic functionalities have to be recreated from scratch in Director". The customer feedback is simple - use another tool then! And please notice - since it's possible to run Windows on Apple - Director's cross-platform functonality is not such a big advantage any more...

    Sorry Dean,

I am not interested in supporting Adobe with Director development now. I have no time to allocate on that.

On the other hand - pretty complete list of Director's bugs and quirks was once upon a time available on one of a the most renown websites covering Director development. But thanks to Adobe's customer-policy - practically all Director-related web resources are already down or dying. So, if Adobe is now telling us "oh please dear customers provide us the list of Director bugs, we want to improve", my answer is rather plain vulgar. They should rather collect the list while it was available. And thanks to dr Allen Partridge  arrogance even Martin Schaefer was deffered when he wanted to supply Adobe team with valuable customer feedback. Please notice recently he finally decided to phase-out Directorforum.

So, please - I treat Adobe "Director prelease program" or whatever as yet another ridicule. If they really were interested in customer feedback, they should become much less snotty first. For the time being the only message I have to Adobe Director team is here:

No specific "positive outcomes" in my humble opinion - you may browse full thread here:
