Help with Text Variables in CS4

May 3, 2011 6:32 AM

I'm assuming that what I'm trying to achieve can be done using text variables.  Although, I could be way off.  I design instruction manuals for various products at my company.  These manuals are each assigned their own part # which is the product # followed by -200 - ie. KL5013-200.  This part # needs to be included at the bottom of the last page.  I was hoping that I could use a text variable that would use the product # located in the manual heading and add the -200.  However, I don't see this as an option in the dialog window.  I do see that you can use the file name, which would work in some instances but not all.  I was also thinking that I could tag the product # and call out the tag in the variable.  This doesn't seem to be an option either.  Am I going about this all wrong?  Could someone please help?

Thanks,

Mel

If you only need to append -200 to the product number in a running header/footer - ie, you never will need -300, etc. - you can type it as text in the master page text frame that contains the running header variable which displays the part number. If -200 will change at some point to -300, etc. you can create text variables for each one you'll need to append, say call one -200 catchy, another -300, eh?, and make the text content the matching number, then use the master pages in each separate InDesign file that contains the appropriate appended number. Or, you can use sections if working in a single file, and name the sections -200, then capture the section marker in the running header/footer.

Search Google for terms like "InDesign running header variables," and "InDesign section marker" without quotes, for more details.
