How disappointing, we just purchased an Asus A500 10.1 “Android 2.2
Tablet and the Adobe Reader does not support 3D PDF.....I know Tetra 4D
are the developer for 3D PDF SDK and features however under the agreement/partnership Adobe
was to support the Free Readers.
It would appear Adobe has really dropped 3D inside
PDF - thnx Adob's
Gazzzz
.........Android does not support AcroForms either...................PDF from ubiquitous to marginalised
Adobe Reader on mobile devices has never supported Rich Media Annotations - not only don't we have access to the scripting API, but rendering 3D models to mobile devices requires hooks into the display driver which simply aren't practicable to implement at this time.
Other features such as forms are equally affected by the lack of scripting. They'll happen eventually but not at the moment. You can read text and images, you can search, that is basically it.
HI Dave,
Thanks for the update. I think your comments may have been valid when mobile devices = mobile phones.
However the tables are more like a PCs now with quite resonable graphics ablilties - surely we can get
better functionality for our PDF now. "You can read text and images, you can search, that is basically it" - PDFwise, this is a step back in functionality - Android has the same functionality as iPAD...In a simlar question to Tetra 4D they (and Adobe) said that are working on a "port" but would not happen til Q3 this year.
Maybe the way forward is the Asus Slate Table, -an i5, 4 RAM, 64 SDHD, running Windows touch - Android does not seem to yet the functionality I was hoping for.
In a plus, Tetra 4D seem to pulling the industry in the right direction - fingers crossed
Here is the email from Tetra 4D - good response alt least it offers some hope for the features that make PDF great!
Hi Garry
For 3D PDF to work, it needs what is know as a scene graph where the format is mapped to the graphical compenent of the screen. Currently there is no application on the market that supports the andriod platform that has a scene graph.
However, we are working on porting technology to make this happen along with discussions with Adobe on how to best combine it withe their android reader product. As soon as we have more information we will share this publically, but it is not planed untill the Q3 of this year.

Somewhat related - non-news on 3D PDF on iPhone.
Some Benjamin Sergeant, while working at Adobe:
Created a 3D-PDF iPhone application that was demoed at the BU all hands and that went to the final round of qualification for the MAX conference. The application was network aware and could do 3D file streaming, caching of the geometric datas, remote conference, and trigger 3D capture on a desktop and download the capture.
But later he had an appointment with firing squ^H^H^H panel.
So, may be, the main technical difficulty is that Adobe just cut the techies.
