Lightroom cannot create or open a catalog named "........."

Windows 7 64bit, 16 GB memory, LARGE amounts of hard drive space  /  Lightroom 3 v3.4.1

 

Can someone please explain this to me? I've created many catalogs with far longer names than this until yesterday when this error message started happening - Thanks for your help, IM

 

""Lightroom cannot create or open a catalog named "061911 Johns Edmonds Art Festival"  on volume 'Imaging (E:)" because the preview cache would exceed the maximum path length length for your platform"".

    Hmmm...works fine for me on Win XP, LR 3.4.1.

     

    Is there something special about your E: drive? Is it perhaps formatted as something other than NTFS? The message implies that the file system where you're trying to create the catalogue has a relatively low limit on the number of characters in a fully qualified path.

     

    The message certainly isn't objecting to how much disk space or memory you have available.

    Is that really the name of your catalog or a file name?

    Can you create catalogs with short names?

    How many catalogs do you have?

    Where are they stored?

    What is the full path, starting with E:\ to the catalog you're trying to create?  The total number of characters apparently exceeds the number LR or the Operating System can handle. 

     

    I think I've had this problem, before, too, so I put my catalog closer to the root of the hard-drive.

    I don't have any extra catalogs in LR just the basic one. Never thought of doing that.
