I am using Dreamweaver Cs5 and have been asked to design a website similar to http://www.terracottaonweb.com/
The site does not need to be quite as complex as the example but the person would like to be able to manage a great deal of the content themselves. Can anyone suggest a good program to use.. Just don't want to purchase and download a program that may turn out to be not what I need or want.
Thanks you for your help!!
Pat
Have you considered Wordpress? Wordpress pages can be edited in Dreamweaver CS5. There's a great set of lessons by Joe Lowery about how to do it. You'll find them at Lynda dot com. A great advantage to creating an ecommerce site with wordpress is the availablity of shopping cart plugins and other apps you usually have to code yourself.
I have followed joe Lowry s tutorial on lynda but somehow when I go to edit the directory through cmd and enter the information exactly as he describes:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Users\Pixels and Paper>cd C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.5.8\bin
C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.5.8\bin>mysql -u root
Then I get the following message
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: N
O)
Do you understand what I am doing wrong?
Pat
Aha!!! It cannot find the localhost and I did not see a screen that asked me which browser to use and localhost..... what am I doing wrong??
In my experience, it's much easier to install WordPress directly on the remote site and then log-in through the WP Admin Panel to create / edit pages, insert images, add optional plug-ins, widgets, etc... 98% of your work will be performed in the WordPress Admin panel, not DW.
Choose a good Theme (commercial or free). Themes effect your site's appearance and functionality. Some Themes are better than others. You may need to test a few before you find the right one for your project.
Tweak the Theme files in DW by going to the Files Panel > wp-content > themes >
See Anatomy of a WordPress Theme for details on what the various files are for

To tweak the CSS, go to your remote site in Firefox with the 'Web Developer Toolbar'. Edit CSS on screen. When you're happy with the results, save the code locally and upload it to your remote server. Done.
Finally, make sure to generate regular backups of your WordPress files and MySql database. This is very important in case something goes wrong which does happen from time to time.
