Several Software plug-ins (NIK for one) will not edt .psd in LR.requiring .tif.
Have checked Preferenes and all Menus and find no way to convert either .dng or .psd to .tif.
Can it be done in Lightroom 3??
Images cannot be changed from one format to another in Lightroom. However, you can export copies of the images and specify that they be saved as tiff images. Then you can work on those copies in the other software. Those copies will include the changes you have made in Lightroom.
Using PSD versus TIF files with Lightroom has been discussed at length on many fourms. The consensus is to save in Photoshop to TIF file format and then import the TIF file into LR. See these links for opinions mostly pro TIF and a few caveats:
The only place where using PSD file format over TIFF has an advantage is in Adobe InDesign. To quote Peter Handley at the last post in the above link:
For example... if you've close cut an image on a plain background and want a graduated shadow that will fade out over a background colour or another image in your layout... you can do that with a PSD file, but not with a TIF. You would need to compose the entire page in Photoshop if you wanted to use TIF files. Not so with InDesign and the PSD format. Actually he is wrong here, TIF transparecny is supported in both Indesign 4 and 5 that I am using.
You are also able to turn layers in a PSD file on and off from within InDesign, allowing you to use one file that may have many variations, in the same layout. A very useful function and a major time saver. If you really need this capability for a specicifc image file, by all means use PSD format. For all other uses TIF files lose no other capability inside InDesign.
Thanks, I do appreciate. Since some plug-ins won't work with psd it makes it time consuming if after Lightroom go to PS and return to LR and then try to use the plug-in. NIK Silver EFEX Pro is one example.
Guess I find it odd that anyone using Adobe as their basis would not recognize the Adobe standard format for a product useable in BOTH LR and PS.
I will start saving in tiff.
