Boolean Keyword Filtering

Hi all

I use bridge to organize my reference library and use keyword categorization extensively.

I also use the filtering a lot, and here lies my question: When I choose more than one keyword, Bridge seems to do an "OR" operation, showing all content that has the first OR the second keyword. I would prefer to drill down my selection by having an AND relation between the keywords, so bridge only displays images that have BOTH keywords. How do I do that?

Thanks and regards,

Michael

The filterpanel is not really designed for searching, it narrows down the files you have displayed in the content window. So if you have one folder open it only searches for files with that keyword in the content window. Selecting an other keyword in the filter panel shows that have that keyword assigned. Meaning files with only that keyword are also selected because that is what you filter for.

What you could do is using the find command (cmd+ F or the menu edit/find) Inhere you have a lot of options to select and using a plus sign creates an extra criteria. So select keyword in criteria and fill in the desired keyword, use the plus to create an extra keyword criteria and fill in the second wanted. In results choose if all criteria are met and be sure to have also the non indexed files and include subfolders checked.

This might slow down your first search action very much but after having indexed all files once you will see a much faster result for future use.

And don't forget to fill in the source, you can narrow it down to one folder or one disk but also your whole connected system

A good way would be to offer his as an option in preferences: Whether to use an "AND" or "OR" relation between keyaords selected for filtering.

I doubt that is ever going to happen, the filter panel is designed to filter the files from the content window and for this it does work quite good. It is not really meant for search purposes. Being able to choose between 'and' or 'or' would also mean to have other criteria available like contains or equals etc. and that would even complicate it more...

And the Find command is designed for this. You have a quick find option in the top bar and a sophisticated Find window with ton's of options that already fulfill your wishes. If you only want to search the current used folder choose this as source.

Maybe the find window could use some extras like saving search templates but it already has a sticky setting to last used. Or maybe a search panel would even be better but I would not hold my breath for a and/or in the filter panel. You better start getting used to the find window

Am I the only one with a need for subtractive filtering here?

No, and this is a common request on the Windows Bridge forum also.

Best thing you can do is put in a feature request to Adobe.
