How to save AI file to be editable in Photoshop?

Hello!
I am pretty novice here so forgive me if a silly question.

I have created a file in Illustrator for a client and afterwards asked that I send her the file so that she can edit it in Photoshop.  So far I have not been able to save the AI files so that when I open them in Photoshop they are still in editable layers - the file opens as one flattened image.

Is it possible so save an AI file so it can be edited in Photoshop?  If so, what is the correct way to save it?

Trying to save myself from having to recreate the file in Photoshop!!

Thank you so much!!!

You can export a PSD file. To what extent it will be editable depends of a number of details. But it won't be vector-based any more and thus depend on resolution. Although there may be shape layers in it.

You can simply open or place the .ai file itself in Photoshop as well and if you need to work back and forth with Ilustrator and Photoshop placing or opening the ai file as a ssmart object would be the way to go.
