Excel file not recognized for data merge

The first line is the header (name, address, city, state, zip). It's in .csv and .xls. Data merge sees the .csv file but when I select the file I'm told the page is empty which it isn't. Does it matter that the first row isn't bold or somehow tagged as the header? I'm stumped.

 

CS5 running on OSX 10.6.8.

    I'd open in a plain text editor, not Excel, check for weirdness, then resave.

    The same client has remitted a .csv file and I'm getting the same unsupported file format or empty file error message as before. This is on two different machines in two versions of ID. Going to try another address file I've used in the past. Driving me nuts.

    Are you be able to see the content in the CSV file when you open it in text edit, or is it blank.

     

    Can you try using the Tab Delimited file rather then CSV?

    I resaved it as another flavor of csv. It's under specialty formats near the bottom of excel choices.
