Audio cuts out when recording in Audition 3

When I start to record in edit view the sound cuts out, but still records.  After I'm done I can hear it when I play it back.  The same thing happens when in multitrack recording.  I record the first track which can't be heard until finished.  Then when I go to record a second track, all I can hear is the first track and not the current track being recorded.  I am familiar with Audition 1.5 and 3, but it's been awhile and just getting back into it.  I've never encountered this problem before.

 

I have an Audigy 2ZS sound card and Windows XP.
