FAQ: How do I capture and post a screen shot or video?

What's the saying? "A picture is worth a thousand words"

 

One of the most helpful things you can do when discussing an issue/problem is to take a still screen shot of the entire screen. This way we can see any error dialogs or visual defects either in the user interface or the image itself, as well as the state of the application. (i.e. what panels are shown, the state of the Layers panel, etc)

 

Here are instructions on how to capture a still screen shot or video to illustrate and bugs or issues you encounter:

 

Capturing screen shots/videos:

Macintosh:

 

To capture a still screen shot on Macintosh:

  1. Press the [Command] + [Shift] + [3] keys together. (Note: you should hear a camera shutter sound if you have the volume on your computer turned up)
  2. The screen shot will be saved to the desktop on your computer and the file will be titled similarly to "Screen Shot 2012-<today's date and time>:
    • Note: You can use Photoshop to highlight/circle any areas of interest if necessary.

To capture a video of your screen on Macintosh:

  1. Launch QuickTime Player (found in the Application folder on OS X)
  2. Choose File>New Screen Recording...

  3. Click the Red record button and follow the instructions on screen:

Windows:

 

To capture a still screen shot on Windows:

  1. Press the Print Screen [PrtScn] key. (Note: this copies an image of the screen to the clipboard)
  2. Open Photoshop, create a new document and select Edit>Paste to past the screen shot in the open document.
    • Note: You can use Photoshop to highlight/circle any areas of interest if necessary.

Cross-Platform (Mac and Windows):

 

To capture a video of your screen on Macintosh or Windows:

 

Users can also capture and host videos for free using Jing/Screencast.com and simply post a link to the screencast.com url in your post.

 

Posting screen shots/videos to the Forum:

 

To post a still screen shot on this forum:

  1. While creating or responding to a topic on this forum, click on the camera icon for "Insert Image":

  2. Click [Choose File] and select the screen shot file. Then click [Insert Image] in the lower right of the Insert Image dialog:

To post a video on this forum:

  1. Upload your video to one of the following online video posting services: youtube.com, vimeo.com, video.google.com, & dailymotion.com
  2. While creating or responding to a topic on this forum, click on the movie/film icon for "Insert Video":

  3. Enter Video URL or Embed Code. Supported Video Sites include: youtube.com, vimeo.com, video.google.com, & dailymotion.com.  Then click [Insert Video] in the lower right of the Insert Video dialog:
