Hi everyone,
I have an indesign CS5 document containing a lot of tables. When I export to pdf the program crashes. It only seems to happen though when I export to print pdf, not interactive pdf.
I wondered if anyone else has had this problem and whether there's a workaround?
Appreciate any assistance.
Please take the maintenance update to 7.0.4; 7.0.0 is horribly buggy.
If crashes continue, please upload the crash report to http://pastebin.com and post a link here.
(Either way, please let us know the outcome.)
Curious. You can download the update manually at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=31&platform =Macintosh.

I realize we forgot to ask the standard diagnostic question -- have you tried exporting to IDML and opening that file? It sometimes helps to clear corruption.
At first glance, your file would appear to have content shared via InCopy. Is that correct, or is that an anomalie?
Also, from another part of the crash report (not cited here), it looks like Live Preflight is in the middle of running. Have you tried turning that off before exporting to PDF? I doubt that will work, but it's so easy to try.
From frames 31-42 we can conclude that drawing a shape on a master page is involved.
Can you discuss your use of master pages? Do you have text frames on master pages overridden?
Some part of this reminds me of a problem involving a placed InDesign file inside another InDesign file where both have overriden master page items with coincidentally the same internal identifier. Do you have a placed InDesign file in this document?
That's the quick analysis. Perhaps more later depending on your replies.

Yes I've already tried that but it didn't work.

No, the content isn't shared via InCopy.

I just tried that and tested but it didn't work.
From frames 31-42 we can conclude that drawing a shape on a master page is involved.
Yes there are shapes on one of the master pages which is applied to the first page only. I just tried to delete these shapes but again after testing the crash still occured.
Do you have text frames on master pages overridden?
I think I probably do but not sure where.
Can you discuss your use of master pages?
I'm using text variables on the master pages but this hasn't affected other documents that don't have so many tables. When I delete the tables, I can export ok to print pdf.
Some part of this reminds me of a problem involving a placed InDesign file inside another InDesign file where both have overriden master page items with coincidentally the same internal identifier. Do you have a placed InDesign file in this document?
There's no placed ID file in the document.
Any further suggestioned appreciated.
Hmm.
Can you share a copy of the file with me? [Click on my icon to the left for my email address].
I'm likely to go to sleep shortly, so I won't be around for much longer tonight.
The crash report indicates some kind of interaction between your table, the text composer, master pages, and text variables.
Not really sure what it is...
Do you have track changes turned on?
The actual place where the crash happens is in the Galley module, called from the InCopyShared module. That's hard to fathom. Do you have the Story Editor window open?
Perhaps inspection of the IDML file's XML (it is zip archive) will be instructive.
Are you able to narrow this to a particular table? That is, for diagnostic purposes, can you delete all other pages in the document and find the problem portion? (You can delete half the document, try to export, lather rinse repeat)
Just another update on this issue.
I tried cutting the tables from the main text thread into a separate text box on the pasteboard, and then I cut them again and pasted back into their original postiion. For some strange reason this has fixed the problem. I can now export to a print pdf without any problem.
Hopefully that will help someone having a similar issue.
If you're still interested in narrowing the problem, I would be intersted in this:
Select a text frame containing a problem table and Export it as a Snippet.
Place it in a new document.
Try to export.
If you still have a crash, now you have a reproducible small test case. Hopefully you would be able to pass that one to me (or to Adobe), since ideally it would be easy to redact, if it was even a client-confidential at that point.
Getting these problems fixed is helpful to others.
