Do you really think about one or some more shortcuts to do it?

It's a 5 min. job with the pen tool. Use the Width Tool along with the Appearance Panel to add an additional stroke for the gold border. Draw 1/4 of it and dup. around the center. Many more tricks, but you'll learn them as you progress.

Remember that in a job like this you only need to draw one eighth of the frame. The rest is all done by reflect-copying.

I think I would start by drawing the red bits, producing the gold afterwards as a stroke behind the red.

I think rcraighead and steve are putting you on the right track.

    • Draw 1/8th of the design.
    • Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform...

    • In the Transform Dialog box, adjust these settings:
      • Set the Registration Point to the bottom center
      • Set copies to one
      • Reflect on the Y axis
      • turn on Preview to see the effect of the transformation

    • Now, you just need to do this one more time. You've created a mirrored pair, we just need this shape to now repeat 3 more times around the center of the design.
    • Apply Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform... again, or SHFT+OPT+CMD+E
    • You will be asked if you are aware you are applying another instance of this effect. Accept.

    • This time, you will be changing two of the attributes to reflect the new shape of the object
      • Rotation is now 90º
      • Registration point is now middle left.
      • Copies = 3.

    • Check your Appearance Panel to see the two instances of the Transform Effect. These are non-destructive and can be edited anytime.

Yep, using effects like that is indeed one way.

In this case though I think it is probably better to do the thing physically, or at any rate expand the effects afterwards and join everything up properly.

Especially if you want directional lighting and that sort of thing. It depends on how precisely you want to reproduce the embossed look of the original.

    Agreed.

    I forgot to two steps:

    1. Drag the transformed shape into your Graphic Styles panel. (now you can apply this to any design 1/8th)
    2. Object > Expand Appearance.

Now, each 1/8th is it's own object, which you can connect to the others using the Pathfinder panel tools, or you can do it individually, point by laborious point.
