Duplicate composition in AfterEffects CS5

Mar 11, 2012 12:11 PM

hello all!

As duplicate a composition in After Effects cs5 and leave it totally independent from the original?

In the composition include precompositions, and changing images, text, name (of composition) ... also modifies the original.

I tried ctrl + d, and from the edit menu -> douplicate, but has not been successful.

Thank you very much.

Duplicate in the Project panel, not the Timeline panel. When you duplicate in the Timeline panel, you are duplicating the layer, not the underlying composition.

Is there a way to duplicate the composition from the timeline though. The reason why I ask is because I need the retain the attributes (position, rotation, etc) of the timeline. Thanks.

    Cheers,
    James

Using AE alone, You will only duplicate a layer within a comp.  It sounds as if this layer may be a nested comp or a precomp.  You would have to do this from the project window, rename it appropriately to avoid confusion, then use the Replace Footage command.

You can then use Replace Footage command for the newly-created comp to make changes.  Use the Replace footage command agin with the main comp open to replace the old nested comp with the newer one.

I am told there are scripts that ease this process, but I'vbe never had to use them.
