Pen Tool Mouse Icon Changed Apperance

While using Ai CS5.1 pen tool and modifier key combinations, the mouse pen graphic changed into X. It was the same apperance with delete, add, convert anchor symbols attached. Restarting Ai did not correct it. I had to exit Ai and restart the computer to restore the mouse pen graphic to the correct appearance. Has anyone seen this and rectified differently?
