Flash Player crashes constantly in Firefox, IE and Chrome

    Dear Chris: I filed a bug report with .dmp.zip attached. It was not letting me attach the .dmp unless I zipped it. Now my question is: Should I file a new bug report for every crash or keep attaching the .dmp file to the same bug report? I have something like 5 crashes per day (i.e., every time I play a video).

    I'd attach a few more crash dumps to the same bug report.  Then we can tell if these are all the same issue.  No need to add each one you get unless we discover that we're seeing different problems.

     

    Can you post back with the bug number so I can take a look?

    I would definitely recommend updating to the newest version.  There's a large number of bug fixes and some great new features included.

    Dear Chris: After updating to 11.2.202.228, I still have crashes on every video. Please see bug re4port no. 3154705 with .dmp attached. Sometimes instead of BSODing, IE8 closes with the following error.

    gajananam,

    Based off the BSOD errors you mentioned a few posts up, I'm wondering if you are encountering a memory issue.  Could you try running the Windows Memory Diagnostic (type "memory" in the start bar's search field) and memtest86 to verify all of your memory is valid?

     

    Could you also provide us with a copy of your dxdiag report?

    Dear Chris: I ran the system memory diagnostics and every thing seems ok. My system does not have memtest86. Shoud I download it from microsoft web site and run it? Also, is dxdiag the output of memtest86?

    Dxdiag is a microsoft utility built into Windows.  From what I've read, memtest86 is one of the defacto memory testers and should definitely rule out corrupt memory as a possibility.

    Dear Chris: Ok, When I hit F9 on bootup, it runs a detailed memory diagnostics, I guess this is memtest86. This showed no issues. Let me run dxdiag and send you the output.

    Thank you for trying that.  Could you attach the dxdiag to your bug report?  In addition, you might want to comment in the bug report that you've tested your memory for hardware problems but it came back clean.

    Gambit, in another thread, fixed the issue by replacing his realtek audio card. Should I now try that approach, or you may find a workaround for me?

    I've noticed this happening since the last update to Flash Player. This only happens on one of my PCs, not on all of them. I'm running the DirectX Debug Runtimes, which give the following output when running the plugin from Firefox:

    When accessing the same page from Internet Explorer, this brings down the entire iexplore process (And there's no debug output through DebugView available).

     

    Looks like the new version of flash player is invoking undefined behaviour?

    Hi Steve,

    Would you be willing to open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com?  We'll want a .dmp (from the IE crash) or Firefox crash ID if possible, along with a dxdiag report and steps to repro.  Do you know if this crash also occurs with the release directx runtime?

    Dear Chris: The new release 11.2.202.233 also BSODs after 12 mins. Pleaes see the bug report no. 3166127. The dump file is attached.

     

    Does Adobe normally release a new version 2nd Fri. of every month? Shall I wait till May to test try again?

    We've got a new 11.3 beta 2 release that was made yesterday.  You might want to give that a try.  I'm going to contact Zhe and see what other blue screen bug he's referring too in your bug report.

    Hi Chris,

     

    The v11.3 plugin for Firefox still crashes - although this time without any debug output from DebugView. Previously I would just get the FlashPlayer control showing "The Adobe Flash plugin has crashed. Send crash report", whereas now I get the standard Windows Problems and Solutions dialog opening with "Adobe Flash Player 11.3 r300 has stopped working" and then the "The Adobe Flash plugin has crashed. Send crash report" message.

     

    As before, the Release Direct3D runtimes do not show the problem. I've added a note to the bug report with this information.

    Since version 11.2.202.18(was beta version) and the flash plugin crashes all browsers on my PC. whether the normal netscape dll or the IE ocx, testing with several webkit and gecko ones; the result is always the same KABOOM. It's obvious something has gone haywire with Adobe devs, precisely since the release of 2 versions (32 and 64bits). I've been trying with different versions and it appears only those releases with 2 editions have the problem; anything before those releases work perfectly fine, so please don't insult our intelligence with check your drivers etc and start cleaning up your mess, personally I've given up on future flash player plugins and I hope HTML5 kicks in faster especially in vid sites so we can get over this endless codswallop.

    P.S. before telling me to check your antivirus and your hardware accel.; I'm a programmer I don't even have an antivirus, please don't tread there

     

    P.S.S I have arelatively old macbook with OSX 10.5.2 that I rarely used, just tested latest bollocks 11.3.xxx and same thing happens. When 2 completely different platforms suffer the exact problem from a plugin; then it doesn't take a lot of analytical thinking to know where the problem lies(glug glug)

    Hi Orazio,

    As a programmer, I'm sure you're aware of the importance of reproducible steps.  If you'd like to see your issues addressed, please open a bug report at bugbase.adobe.com.  Include steps and system specifics required for us to reproduce this problem internally.  In addition, any crash dumps/logs you have would be helpful.  Here's a FAQ that describes in detail the information we'd like:

     

    How do I report a Flash Player crash to Adobe?

     

    Without these details and if we are unable to reproduce a crash internally, the likelyhood of it being fixed is reduced drastically.

    Hello, and to everyone having this problem:

     

    Try this

     

    - In Chrome type about:plugins

     

    - Click the + next to details in the top right corner

     

    - scroll down to flash player and disable all of them except Pepper Flash version 11.2.31.144 (you may have 1 or 2 others.) Here's what it looks likeDisablingFlash.jpg

     

     

     

    I'm not sure how to do this in Firefox. Also, this may not fix everyones problems, however it worked for me so I thought I'd spread the word.

    Having the exact same issue on my Windows 7 64Bit laptop.  Started happening a few weeks ago.

     

    Every single time I load my browser (Whether it is Chrome, Firefox, IE) I have my favorites set to boot up on each one, some of them have flash and as soon as the browser loads, Flash crashes.

     

    So very very frustrated right now. 

     

    I uninstall flash, reboot, reinstall, load browser, crash.

     

    Any updates on the crashes for Flash?  Is there anything I can do to get help on this from Adobe?

    I have a miserable time with Flash as well. It crashes daily on my kids Vista machine, but last week I got a brand new Dell E6530 Windows 7 64. This machine is spanking new and has only Office and the main browsers on it, and Adobe X Standard. Flash crashes like crazy. I am on 11.3.300.268. Crashes like mad in FF, and to a lesser degree everywhere else. Funny thing is it also crashes on my Mac Book Air 2011, though not very often. These computers are brand new, unmolested, as delivered by Dell and Mac.

     

    Geesh, even if it is going to crash a lot, can you make it crash quickly rather than hang my browsers for 2 minutes everytime? At least it does not crash the browsers - they seem to recover to the Flash Crashed image just fine. I have a BSCs and have been writing code for 17 years - unhandled exceptions usually happen very quickly unless there is a stack overflow, race, or infinite loop.

    I cannot say how angry I am that Adobe has screwed up my computer. I used to have a system on which I could watch Channel 4OD videos an hour long on firefox without a single holdup. Since attempting to upgrade Flash (after being prompted to do so on Youtube) I now I have to refresh every three minutes. I can't even get through a five minute Youtube video without it freezing. Flash version 11.3 didn't work at all and now version 10.3 runs as I described above. To find out by researching on the internet that Adobe KNEW that there were problems and still didn't warn me on the update page makes me incredibly angry.

    How about a warning on the update page in letters an inch high

     

    "WARNING, USING THIS UPDATE MIGHT SCREW UP YOUR COMPUTER AND WE HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE HOW TO FIX IT!!"

     

    Too late to get me back to a useable system but at least it might help others.

    Dear Schneiderman93: How do I download pepper flash? I have a windows 7 64-bit machine, and about:plugins only shows shockwave flash and nothing else. Shockwave flash, of course, crashes ad infinitum.

    For those encountering problems, I apologize.  I'd recommend rolling back to a previous version if the latest update hasn't resolved your problems.

     

    How do I revert to a previous version of Flash Player?

    Hey Chris, using pepper flash does help some (disable all other flash add ons). YOU have been great to try and find solutions. Thank you! Is Adobe not going to work on a fix to this problem? Doesn’t say much for the company. Anyway, thanks for your support!

    - Click the + next to details in the top right corner

    Dear Sniderrick3: Thanks; Mysteriously, I am able to find the "pepper flash" in my windows xp chrome, but not in my win 7 chrome at home. I was searching for this in Windows 7 in chrome. It said my Chrome is up-to-date but I cound not locate pepper flash. Will try again tonight.

    Does pepper flash completely solve the problem of crashes or just helps a little?

    We definitely want to find and fix these crashes!  Any crash logs you can submit will help, or if you have reproducible steps I encourage you to take a minute and open a bug at bugbase.adobe.com.

     

    @gajananam - you might want to see if you have an update for Chrome available on your Win7 system.  I had to check mine, which prompted an update that allowed me to get the pepper build.

    I'll put my 2 cents in. I've experienced these plugin lock-ups ever since a flash player patch over half a year ago. I can't remember any time flash had crashed prior to this.  I keep firefox, IE and the flash player up to date, constantly hoping these crashes will cease.

    One thing to note for myself is that the plugin doesnt crash on its own exactly, sometimes the audio goes (which somehow disables all of my audio), sometimes video will simply not load. It seems to be related to leaving the plugin active too long (my workstation is on almost 24/7). The short-term fix is usually to manually end the application in task manager, then restart the webpage. It may be conflicting with my drivers or my browser. I've tried updating both to no avail. My other systems with the same updates seem to have similar symptoms.

    My answer as of right now is to disable Adobe Flash in Firefox.

     

    With respect, you do not seem to have gotten it right for many months. This latest update is the worst of the worst. Firefox is almost unusable for any page that has Flash on it with this plugin enabled. The Flash seems to restart and restart every second or so and I'm constantly clicking.

     

    So, no thank you, Adobe. Perhaps HTML 5 standard will become more universal and make this buggy, crash-prone, resource-hogging, irritating piece of software obsolete.

    @AlanStancliff02 - Did you try disabling Flash Player's Protected Mode (see the bottom of the FAQ linked below) to see if that helped in your case? 

     

    I'm sorry you're running into this, but having looked at the crash and hang statistics on Mozilla's crash stats site, the latest version of Flash Player appears to be more stable than the last (and MUCH better than the initial 11.3 release.)  We've still got issues that we're working on and we really depend on users like yourself that run into problems for information and bug reports.

     

    How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?
