Hi all,
I know there is no absolute answer to this but I'm curious what is the current SAFE 'average page width' to fit most computer browsers?
Basic laptop screen resolution are 1024 or 1280 - 1440 and desktop screens even bigger - and now we have to think of tablets too (but I'm not too concerned with this right now) - so...
Some prefer to talk about - browser viewport...
Q: What is the best SAFE 'average page width' to use?
If you are worried about different devices look up responsive design and media queries. This is a sample tutorial involving DW:

As far as widths go, you might be best looking into some systems like Less Framework ( http://lessframework.com/ ) or the 960 Grid ( http://960.gs/ ).

If you want SAFE, use Google Analytics or some other web stats reporting to determine who the majority of your users are. Then build accordingly.
Responsive Web Design seems to be less about theory and more about necessity now.
Thierry Koblentz has an interesting take on it:
