Adobe Media Encoder didn't show up until CS4.

Adobe Media Encoder goes back at least Pro 1.

In CS4 it became a stand alone.

Can't remember what it was called in 6.5: Adobe mpeg encoder?

That's my point.  Before the transcoding engine was separated, I don't think it was called anything.  It was just part of PP.

I can't pull up CS3 at the moment, but I think the option under "Export" was "Adobe Media Encoder" which was separate from "Movie" for example.

A shortcut that directly sent you from a sequence to the export settings for cs3-ame-whatever it was called, would have been nice. After all, you had to keep doing that over and over, after each one was exported.

That was a huge feature addition: batching exports in CS4!

I can verify that in PrPro 2.0, it was named "Adobe Media Encoder," and seem to recall that name from at least PrPro 1.5.

It was, however, not a stand-alone app.
