What is inside that avi?

H.264 NOT inside AVI http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854115

Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037

What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037

.

Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

.

For PC http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ or http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

.

http://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotraining/2011/02/red-yellow-and-green-render-bars.html

.

If you have a red line over the timeline after importing a video and before adding any effects... your project is wrong for your video... read above about codecs

.

Once you know exactly what it is you are editing, report back with that information... and your project setting, and if there is a red line above the video in the timeline, which indicates a mismatch between video and project

UPDATE: I got the videos to work fine by converting the .AVI files to .mp4, however, there is a red line above the videos in my project. I'm not sure if that's a bad thing.

And I'm not sure what the codec is. I used MediaInfo and when I clicked "find out the codec" it directed me to the Microsoft website.

>red line above the videos in my project

Yes, that is a bad thing... if you have an immediate red line when you import

That means that your project is not correct to match your video

Mediainfo will tell you what is actually inside your files... that is what you need to report here

You also need to read the last two lines of my previous post... and click the link at the end

If doing that does not result in a timeline with no red line... you have something wrong with your file

If Digital Video Editing is something that you see yourself doing more of in the future, you'll have to try to get a better handle on the meaning and application of codecs. A simple but not perfect way to think about codecs is by their intended purpose. Basic Run Down would list Acquisition Codecs, Intermediate Codecs, Delivery Codecs.

Some codecs are for acquisition with cameras, and APP CS5x can use the majority of those acquisition codecs natively, without the need to change formats to an intermediate for editing. This differs from FCP(x) which use intermediates for a lot of source material. Some source files need to be converted to an "intermediate" codec to edit in APP CS5x, either because the cameras files are unique and not supported natively, or that once compatible clips have been processed or pre-edited in some program that exported a Delivery oriented codec rather than Acquisition or intermediate.

Your scenario sounds like the latter. What I would consider is the viability of the intermediate codec you chose. .mp4 files, particularly ones based on the H.264 codec are widely supported for editing. The main caveat I would say is the dimensions and bit rate of the intermediate file that you create. Typically you want the intermediate file to match the dimensions and framerate of the source file. Also you want to use a constant high bit rate to encode the intermediate file. You want to preserve any quality that the source had intact.

There are some other intermediate codec choices that many prefer over H.264. You may look at that if you are not getting want you want from the .mp4s.

As John says, we need to know what the video codec used in that AVI container is.

Please provide answers to the questions listed here: "FAQ: What information should I provide when asking a question on this forum?"

Okay John, I did as you said, and now the result is a yellow line. I'm sure that that's a good sign, so thank you for your help.

However, I have ran into another problem. When I export my project, the exported video only plays a few seconds. And my project was 10 minutes. I don't know why this is happening.

And Stephen, I have gotten what I wanted out of converting the files. Thank you for explaining codecs to me.

It MAY be that you have not read up on how to do exporting, to know the difference between the WAB (work area bar) and the entire project

Hi savannahd9980,

i was facing a similar problem, where I

tried dragging the video file to the

timeline and all I see is the audio file

coming in.

i noticed on the video track on timeline,

where there is "V1", two of it if I'm not

wrong, selected (blue colour in mine),

was actually disabled. The one on the

left hand side which reads "Source

patching for inserts and overwrites"

next to the lock symbol.

i enabled it and it worked, do give it a

shot.

using adobe premiere pro cc 2015.3

This is the easiest solution! Thank you!

V1 before the lock needed to be clicked.
