Why won't my Raw images open or download properly?

I have a Canon Rebel. I am using Mac OS X Lion. When I download my Raw images onto my computer, they are just black squares where the pictures should be. I have tried in Lightroom 3, Lightroom 4, and iPhoto. All the same thing....

    It's a Canon EOS Rebel XS.

    Are you using a card reader or a cable directly from the camera? Using a card reader has been known to solve this problem for some. From my recollection using the version prior to the present one,  iPhoto doesn't read RAW files.

    I used an USB cable that connects to my camera to upload the photos straight into Lightroom. I also tried using this to upload straight to iPhoto. I have the newest version of iPhoto, but maybe it still doesn't work? But Lightroom definitely should...

    I don't have a card reader but I guess if that's the only solution I would definitely get one... I was just hoping someone had a different solution. Thanks!

    I had this problem too and found an old post stating that it was the fact that I was using the camera connected via USB.  As soon as I plugged it into a card reader all my CR2's showed up and I could import them.  Not sure why it is this way but it is...

    Ok, I appreciate the tips. Looks like I'll be buying a card reader this weekend and testing it out. I hope that is the solution! Thanks again.
