PDF Files will no longer open on Mac

None my saved pdf files will open on Mac (operating system 10.6.8), this is a fairly recent issue. Every time I try and open a file I get the following message.

Adobe Reader could not open 'File Name.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Please can somebody help as all my files are now inaccessable.

Man, I hope you get an answer for this question. I can't download any pdfs at all anymore on my Mac. OS10.7.3 I don't even get an error message, it doesn't show that I've opened a pdf, I just get a blank screen. It's getting very frustrating. I've been searching for an answer online and just saw your question. Hopefully you'll get an answer soon and it will answer mine as well.
