Hello forum, my videos are running INCREDIBLY slow and choppy and I can't seem to put in the correct presets. My camera is the new Sony DSC-HX200V and the video is in AVC HD 24M (FX) (1920x1080(60i))
Does the software even support this video type??
Your title says progressive, but the body of your message says interlaced (60i) so what are you actually using?

As far as the slow & choppy, you need a STRONG computer to edit AVCHD

For effective HD video editing, a laptop with the following
-at least the Intel sandy bridge 2720 or 2820 quad processor
-and nvidia graphics preferably the 460m, 485m is a bit much
-1280x900 display with OpenGL 2.0-compatible graphics card
-and 8 or 16 gig ram and Win7 64bit Pro
-and 2 internal 7200 HDDs minimum
.

Premiere Elements does not work well with 1920x1080p AVCHD, Joey. I wouldn't recommend you try to edit video shot in 60p. You should be able able to edit AVCHD shot in 60i, however -- an option available on most 60p camcorders.
As to whether or not your MacBook Air can handle the video, it depends on how fast your processors are and how much RAM and hard drive space you have. Unlike PowerBooks, the Airs are built for portability, not power. Most are way underpowered for serious video editing (beyond iMovie).

If you START with a red line over a new timeline, your project does not match your video... no red line = correct project
When you add effects and the line becomes red, you need to render
