Transforming Lines Generating a Bounding Box

I have a really odd issue occuring in Illustrator CS 5.5 on Mac. When I select any shaped item (using pc mouse) and drag it to resize it smaller or larger the object does a quick jump away from the mouse and creates a second item over the first. I delete the second item which always has a box border around it and the item I dragged is underneath often not where I let it go at.

I've checked for Align to Pixel Grid and that is off for all shapes.

Has anyone else had this issue it's really causing me a ton of greif.
