dw cs5 (not responding) for 5 minutes or more, other problems

May 5, 2012 2:07 AM

  • if I am doing a manual virus scan of my machine, the minute the scan starts, dw becomes locked up and the GUI refuses to redraw and it might even say (not responding).

periodically for some unknown reason, (seems to be ANY disk accesses by some background app?) usually dw freezes during that time for about 5 minutes after the disk access is over.  a few times it is shorter, but not usually.

  • in all the dw cs5 built-in templates, charset for UTF-8 (should be upper case to meet w3c validation) is in as utf-8.
  • <script></ doesn't close the tag with html5 pack.  neither does anything with SVG or MathML, which are part of HTML5.
  • the full set of modules for css3 and css2.1 are not supported in the HTML5 pack.  I would like to do browser testing.  I would also like to future-proof my investment!  don't just do the minimums.
  • the full set of HTML5 tags, attributes, input element types according to the w3c standard are not included in Insert, tag portion of the menu in the HTML5 pack.
  • syntax highlighing for javascript clearTimout() is different than the syntax highlighting for setTimeout().
  • syntax highlighting is not done correctly for situations where there are 2 /'s on a line in javascript, such as where there is math (division) and a // at the end of the line.  it is improperly lexed as a regex.  this really bugs me when I am coding.
  • there needs to be a fixed refresh button for reinterpreting code/code+design/design view when changes have been made and something goes wrong like a redraw failure, or for when a problem has been fixed and you would like to see if dw sees any broken tags left.
  • the feature in dw which you set in prefs that is supposed to "fixup documents with missing/mismatched tags" and such doesn't do that. it only makes lots of noises that it is doing so, but never does anything about it except throw up a dialog.  I want it to fix the document like I told it to.  broken feature.  as it is, I have to make lots of guesses as to where those broken tags are, because dw doesn't highlight them either.   I designed an algorithm I use in my bracematcher program at https://sourceforge.net/projects/bracematcher/  you might be interested in which would flag those orphaned open and close tags.  I am sure you can do this yourself, it just requires knowledge of recursion and stacks and using == and != it's very simple.  I was thinking might even be able to rewrite my program to work with tags, which would make it an even more interesting program.  the lexer and string handling is the toughest part, and HTML is weird with strings on attributes.  I really need to do this since dw isn't highlighting my tag problems.  at least I can get a detailed report of the problems with my tags.

What Anti-Virus program?  How much memory is in your system and how much is free before the start of the scan?

This problem looks to be fixed in later releases.  You might be able to update the template but hard to say.

This I will confirm.  But it is Adobe's argument for the Creative Cloud about providing updates on a more regular basis by moving to a subscription model.  Only way you are going to see more updates is to upgrade more often or move to the Cloud.

Not sure I understand what you are asking to be refreshed.  You can refresh the Live View but what is not refreshing Design View?

I don't understand enough javascript to discuss the js syntax highlighting you are expecting.

McAfee & Norton are notorious resource hogs. It doesn't matter how much memory you have, they will take over your computer. And they frequently cause other apps to slow down or stop responding until the AV finishes whatever it's doing.   I got so annoyed with the top AVs that I actually considered not using any at all.  Finally downloaded MS Security Essentials.  It's great! No more intrusions or memory leaks.

I think "the cloud" is highly overrated.  expensive during these times.

Initially I thought so too, but on closer look, Creative Cloud looks more like a win, win for multiple product users. Where else can you find 17 products for the intro price of  $29.99/month?

I would like to see that fixed in cs5, please, if possible.  it should be a fairly minor change in code. and you will have VERY USEFUL results, (people will love you for it!)

as things stand now, dw only highlights the *surrounding* tags that have the problem.  not the tags that have the problem.

This is a user-to-user forum.  Adobe engineers don't read these posts.  It's highly unlikely that Adobe will make further improvements to an old product given that CS6 is due out this week.  If you have a bug or feature request, please submit via the link below.   Your suggestions probably won't make it into CS5 or even CS6 but may surface in some future release.

but when an application locks up totally THEN I have a problem.  don't shift blame here.  as an software developer and software tester, I know a problem when I see it.  and this is a problem with dreamweaver ONLY.

Not shifting blame here.  I can sympathize.  Several people have reported unacceptable lock-ups which appears to be caused by Facebook code.

You might try disabling "Display External Files" from your View Menu.

    Good luck,

I will have to try rosetta mode if it's there is windows.

There is no Rosetta mode in Windows.  Just modifying that setting may be what Nancy was referring to.  The Facebook code is not what you are referring to.  Nancy is referring to hosted applications for Facebook that you can develop in DW.

And just to clarify my point from earlier, the point of the Cloud per some of Adobe's influential staff is to be able to push out updates more frequently.  As David stated in another post it has to do with tax-laws and regulations about recognizing income.  But Lifehacker actually did its own study and found that if you upgrade every version it is cheaper than paying $600/yr for the Cloud.  And I share the doubt with you that going to the Cloud only makes sense if Adobe shows an act of good faith with some updates.  I remember updating to CS5 to fix a bug in the color picker of all things.

To your XHTML5 comment, I didn't think XHTML5 was being actively developed anymore.  HTML5 is capable of XML serialization.  If you have news to add here please feel free.

Maybe the next step here is showing us a document that is hanging up to try and reproduce the error for you.  As a software developer you can respect that Adobe will be more likely to fix issues that are experienced by the most users and are reproduceable.
