Photoshop Elements 8 Crashing?

May 5, 2012 11:37 PM

I got PSE 8 along with my Wacom tablet for Christmas, and have been using it about an average of twice a week since - and it ran totally fine until a few days ago. Now, when I try to open it, PSE starts to open and then crashes. I'm on a Vostro 3500 with Windows 7 as my OS - and I'm just so confused. Any help or suggestions on what to do would be greatly appreciated Anyone else having this problem?

What are the exact steps you're doing (what screens do you see, what are you clicking, etc.)?  Any error messages?  What do you mean by "crashes" -- what are you seeing?

OK, after that happens, start Task Manager and look on the "Processes" tab to see if there are any Photoshop Elements processes running.

I'm still not sure how you're starting the Editor -- what do you mean by "open the editing portion of it"?

I'm just clicking on the start menu and running it - pretty much the general way you start most programs.

Forgive me for belaboring the point, but I started using PSE with version 9, so I don't know if PSE8 had a "Welcome" screen.  Are you saying that you have two separate icons?  One to start the Organizer and one to start the Editor?

You said that the PSE8 Editor was working until a few days ago.  What changes did you make to your system?  Did you install or uninstall any software?  Get a new printer?  Update any drivers, etc.?

OK, thanks.  So far, that all sounds good.

Try to start the Editor and let it fail.  Then look in the Windows event logs for any items that have a red icon and refer to PSE:  Start...Control Panel...Administrative Tools...Event Viewer.  In the left panel, double-click on the "Windows Logs" folder to expand it.  Then look at the "Application" log and the "System" log.

In that box at the top of the "General" tab, drag your cursor over all the text to highlight it, then hit Ctrl+C to copy the text to the Clipboard.  Paste it into your message here.

Is there only the one event for that latest PSE failure in the logs?

    Oh, well...that doesn't help much.

In case one of your system files is corrupted, see this MS document for instructions on using the System File Checker tool (sfc):

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Run sfc with the /scannow option at an elevated command prompt:

    sfc /scannow

The scan might take a while, so be patient.  When it finishes, restart your computer.

    Hi IvySquirrel,

Please try the following workarounds for PSE8 crashing on launch.

Following could be the possible workarounds :

    1)      On the drive on which you have installed PSE,on my machine it is on C:

Go to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9\Locales\<locale>\Plug-Ins\Import-Exportand you will find twain plug-in. Remove that plug-in from that location and copy it somewhere else.

Now launch PSE and check if it works.

    2)  Try resetting the PSE preferences by

       1. Close Elements.

       2. Launch the Photoshop Elements Welcome Screen and hold down ctrl + alt + shift as you click Edit.

       3. Continue to hold the keys until you see a message box asking if you want to delete Photoshop Elements settings file; click Yes. Elements will open with default preferences.

    3) In case any network printer is attached try to launch without network or printer uninstall.

    Regards,
