I got PSE 8 along with my Wacom tablet for Christmas, and have been using it about an average of twice a week since - and it ran totally fine until a few days ago. Now, when I try to open it, PSE starts to open and then crashes. I'm on a Vostro 3500 with Windows 7 as my OS - and I'm just so confused. Any help or suggestions on what to do would be greatly appreciated
Anyone else having this problem?
I'll open the "editing" portion of it, and it'll appear like it's going to open normally, everything even loads up and I feel like I've got photoshop up and running for about three seconds until I go up to "file" and click on it. Then it does the classic freeze, and then I get "Photoshop has stopped working, windows is checking for a solution to the problem".
I'm just clicking on the start menu and running it - pretty much the general way you start most programs.
There aren't any. I'd like to uninstall and reinstall and see if that helps any, but the program keeps telling to to deactivate it and I have to go into Photoshop to do that. :/ The organizer portion of it appears to be working fine, but not the editing.

Forgive me for belaboring the point, but I started using PSE with version 9, so I don't know if PSE8 had a "Welcome" screen. Are you saying that you have two separate icons? One to start the Organizer and one to start the Editor?
You said that the PSE8 Editor was working until a few days ago. What changes did you make to your system? Did you install or uninstall any software? Get a new printer? Update any drivers, etc.?

Yup! The Editing portion is seperate from the Organizer.
There's been very little change in my computer over even the last month - nothing installed other than a safe update of a Google Chrome extension, only a couple dozen pictures downloaded, nothing to shoot up red flags at me. I'm a pretty cautious person with computers, especially this one, so I just can't figure out why its gone haywire. My OS still has about three-quarters left yet to fill up, so I'm not thinking it's memory, and it's certainly not my tablet. Overall, nothing that I haven't done before with PSE installed.
OK, thanks. So far, that all sounds good.
Try to start the Editor and let it fail. Then look in the Windows event logs for any items that have a red icon and refer to PSE: Start...Control Panel...Administrative Tools...Event Viewer. In the left panel, double-click on the "Windows Logs" folder to expand it. Then look at the "Application" log and the "System" log.

Oh, well...that doesn't help much.
In case one of your system files is corrupted, see this MS document for instructions on using the System File Checker tool (sfc):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Run sfc with the /scannow option at an elevated command prompt:
sfc /scannow
The scan might take a while, so be patient. When it finishes, restart your computer.

Hi IvySquirrel,
Please try the following workarounds for PSE8 crashing on launch.
Following could be the possible workarounds :
1) On the drive on which you have installed PSE,on my machine it is on C:
Go to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9\Locales\<locale>\Plug-Ins\Import-Exportand you will find twain plug-in. Remove that plug-in from that location and copy it somewhere else.
Now launch PSE and check if it works.
2) Try resetting the PSE preferences by
1. Close Elements.
2. Launch the Photoshop Elements Welcome Screen and hold down ctrl + alt + shift as you click Edit.
3. Continue to hold the keys until you see a message box asking if you want to delete Photoshop Elements settings file; click Yes. Elements will open with default preferences.
3) In case any network printer is attached try to launch without network or printer uninstall.
