Costco labs, auto correct and exif data?

I recently sent some work to a costco lab that has done good work for me over the years. Once the file is ready and sized and output sharpened, I convert to the custom ICC profile for the lab and machine and paper that I'm using, and softproof for it. this has worked fine for years, just as it works fine for the professional labs I use for my more important professional work. I work with a regularly calibrated system, because i want to be in control of the process from beginning to end.

Costco has always had a checkbox in their upload procedure for the option to have them auto correct the color. I have always opted to turn that off - because I have already made all the adjustments necessary for their machine to translate the photoshop numbers from my machine to theirs correctly -- just hit the print button, please and don't make any changes... It's already been profiled for your machine and I have made all the adjustments I deem necessary, thank you.

They have always agreed with that - until now. the recent images I sent were way off - too light, too green - horrible - I checked the profile - it was the correct new profile - all should have went well.

The Tech Mgr there told me that the problem was that i had used photoshop to prepare the images, and he told me that PS ( I'm on CS5 - and Lightroom 3 - all updated ) by default would strip the exif data from my files. Really? i thought. I've never known that to be true , plus I want all the metadata intact, so my files contain the contact and copyright info, IPTC data and all the exif data. The technician told me that was the problem- since my files DID contain exif info, their computer thought it was just any random file sent in and Costo's machine then- by default - ignored my request to NOT auto correct -- they then auto corrected the file screwing up the color. their computer/printer- a big noritzu unit, apparently ALWAYS auto corrects any files that have exif data, whether you tell it to auto correct or not.

So how does one avoid this? their upload process confirms that i chose to shut down auto correct - yet they auto correct, making things incorrect. So my question to all and anyone out there: is the solution to go into PS preferences in the file handling tab and click on: Ignore EXIF Profile Tag in the file compatibility box? It is currently clicked off. Would that fool their machine? Is that the solution to my problem?

and if I do indeed want to maintain all the exif data in my files but want to strip it just from a file I send to Costco or any lab that hash as similar issue - how would i go about stripping the exif info just from the jpeg I am uploading to them?

Anyone? ( thanks in advance for any knowledgeable answers)

Owen

Hi,

I just bought the Dell u2713hm that supports the 2560x1440 resolution. My laptop (with Geforce GT540M) obviously has only HDMI and VGA port. I will use the monitor only for my job, so Photoshop, Autocad and Rhino (no movies or videogames). I have 2 questions and hope you can help me:

1. HDMI imput seems to be limited to 1920x1080@60Hz, while the VGA reaches 2048x1152@60Hz. You think I have to still use HDMI or I can go for the VGA with a resolution a bit higher?

2. Is there any breakthrough (converter or settings) that let me reach the 2560x1440 resolution with my laptop?

Thanks in advance for the answers

need a new digital camera - advice, please?

My DX6490 Kodak digital camera started behaving erratically today when I was out taking pictures. This is the second time this occurred (the first time i happened was July 1, 2010), I got this camera brand-new in early August 2004 - so I believe its time for me to get a new digital camera.

Here are the things I hate about my current digital camera -

- doesn't take very good pictures in low light (dusk, dimly-lit places),

- I have to wait several seconds between shots and I often miss a good action shot (when using sport mode),

- have problems taking close ups, even in close up mode - camera will not accept close up nor wide angle lenses, etc.,

- I have to really back up far away from the subject I'm photographing just to get all of the surrounding area in the view finder when snapping a picture - sometimes this is awkward or inconvenient,

- sometimes when taking pictures of people using flash the people in front (closest to camera) are too light, people in middle lit normally, but people in back (farthest from camera) are too dark,

- camera doesn't focus very well in natural indoor light (like in a shopping mall, etc.) resulting in blurry pictures, pictures tend to be blurry even when using PASM mode without a flash;

ok, now for the things I like about my current digital camera -

- it allows me to photograph moving subjects (like kids running around during a basketball game) very clearly (it freezes the movement of the basketball players, resulting in clear, crisp still photos of the players when using sport mode (and the flash),

- the camera is lightweight, compact so I can hold it in one hand and just aim and shoot the subject (while using sport mode),

- the batteries (I have 3 of them) are infinitely rechargeable,

- the camera is 4 mega pixel.

so I'd like a recommendation of the latest digital cameras that have all of the things I like about my digital camera and none of the things I hate about it, such as, I want a camera that -

- is lightweight/compact, can hold it in one hand, aim and shoot in sport mode using one hand,

- accepts wide angle, telephoto, macro, close-up lenses,

- with a flash that illuminates a group of people (closest to/middle/farthest from camera) evenly,

- accepts the current batteries that I'm now using with my DX6490 Kodak digital camera,

- focuses very well when taking pictures in natural light (such as in a store, restaurant, or shopping mall, etc) resulting in clear, crisp photos, not too dark when not using the flash,

- which I can snap, snap, snap, continuously by pressing the shutter button repeatedly at every setting/mode that I'm using, resulting in clear, crisp photos without having to wait several seconds until the camera resets/reboots (as in the case with my DX 6490 Kodak) and missing a good shot that I want regardless of whether I'm using a flash or not,

- takes superb pictures in low light (dusk, dimly-lit places),

- accepts the current memory cards (SanDisk/SD) that I'm using now.

Well, that's all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

My budget is approx. $300 - $400, but if I can get a camera that has all the features that I'm looking for cheaper the cost, so be it.

Midrange DSLR Camera with Video Capabilities?

So I'm a soon-to-be graphic design graduate. Up until now I've (1) Used school cameras (2) Commissioned photographers or (3) Used stock photography. However, I'm planning to move abroad to Japan in a few months, and I think I ought to invest in at least a midrange camera (rather than the cheap point-and-shoot that I use for vacation photos.) I'm also quite interested video blogging, and since I'm also investing in the Adobe Master Suite and will have After Effects, I'd like something with decent video capabilities as well.

My design style tends to rely on illustration more than photography, but I'm looking for the best my budget can get me. I could possibly stretch it to $600, but ideally $500 or $550 would be the most I'd spend. Also, perhaps a Sony, Nikon, or Canon would be best since if I ever need repairs, a Japanese repair shop would be familiar with the make/model.

So, what do you guys suggest?

I'm a beginner, so I probably would need something that is user-friendly, but also the best of its kind. My price range would be anything from $600-2000. If you could recommend anything for me, that would be great!

I would also like to know, how can you tell a good quality camera from an okay one?

photographing electric arc welding

I'm a welding instructor and I'm trying to get some info on what it would take to photograph or take digital video of arc welding. I'm not trying to do profesional quality just trying to get some teaching aides for my students. I've tried taking photos through a welding lens and they came out really dark. I went to a lighter shade then they went really light . It seems that doing it this way causes a very narrow setting from too dark to too light. Any help or input or what to possibly try would be greatly appreciated I'm teaching this class for free so if its possible to do what i want to do I have a fairly low budget to work with again thanks for any help.

New Monitor Advice and Guide

I am looking for some feedback on a few questions that I have in regards to recommended equipment and color managing questions I would like some feedback on. I will start with some details as far as what I do and my current equipment so the suggestions can be as detailed as possible.

I am what I would describe as a semi pro designer and photographer. I began my interest in photography as a hobbyist years ago. Now, I am taking jobs both for photography and with graphic design. I mostly design websites, logos, and other common design work but that is really as far as my designs have gone thus far...

The equipment and software I am currently using are as followed:

Asus G74SX laptop (Modifications and specks bellow)

Upgraded to 16GB of ram and soon a SSD

Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M

I7 2670Q 220GHz CPU

Other specs http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388164,00.asp?tab=Specs

External displays (IPS)

Asus PA 248Q (new)

HP 2311XI

SpyderPRO4

Wacom Intuos4

Adobe CS5.5 masters collection (Possible Upgrade 6mo-1year)

Lightroom 3(Possible Upgrade 6mo-1year)

Nikon Cameras D3100 & D7000

Although I am using a laptop as a workstation currently, I am thinking of investing in building a Desktop configuration in the future. So in regards to your recommendations, keep this in mind.

Now I’ll get to my questions.

I just got myself a PA248Q http://www.asus.com/Commercial_Monitors_Projectors/PA248Q/ . I am thinking of returning this monitor in for the earlier monitor model PA246Q http://www.asus.com/Monitors_Projectors/PA246Q/ the major difference with these two models as far as I see is the PA246Q has a 10bit P-IPS Panel and works with a wide gamut (98% aRGB) the PA248 has a cheaper panel and only 98% sRGB coverage

The color does look good on the PA248 even before calibration. But I was wondering if the PA246 is the better monitor for my needs? I am shooting raw photos and am currently shooting and working in sRGB but would shoot aRGB if I had the correct monitor. Am I missing out shooting in sRGB? Is it best for me to switch color spaces? Any reasons for having a 10bit monitor if I only output 8bits from laptop? I am using a HDMI now to run my external monitor. I figure that is better than the VGA output (my only options) will HDMI be my best bet?

I also heard that even if you only output 8bit the 10bit with wide gamut calibrates more accurately, is this true?

Any other benefits or suggestions that I did not touch on would be helpful as well. I just want to be sure as to what my best option is. I thank everyone ahead of time for your help and taking your time to give me some guidance. Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Color Matching

Hey guys,

I have two questions for all you photoshop PRO's!

Let's say I have two pictures. The first one is a RAW file and the second is the same file, but a flat PSD with some color and contrast moves done to it.

What I want to do is to (of course start with processing the RAW file so I have a PSD/tiff) and then I would like to match the colors to 100%.

Usually I would do this by eye, but I would like to find out if there's any quicker way to do it? I started to look in to the color sampler tool to get the different values, but kind of got stuck there.

Preferably I would also like to have all these color and contrast moves in layers if possible. So that I can adjust them if I want.

---------------------------------

The second question is basically the same but this time the reference photo is a different picture.

I am using Photoshop CS6 on a mac.

Hope you can help out with this!

Thank a lot in advance!
