How do I subscribe to Adobe Framemaker 12? I can't find a real link on the adobe site anywhere?

Finding Framemaker on this takes me back to the Framemaker page with buying guide and the very small letters on it!

Hi,

I have TCS5 (FM12 and RH11), but am now trying FM12's publish feature. So far, Chrome and Firefox work well. In other words: I click on an item in our application software and the browser opens and jumps at the proper location (where the CSH marker is). But IE11 only opens up the proper file. So what the user see is the beginning of the HTML file and has to search for what he/she wants in the file, which defeats the purpose of CSH marker.

It seems that the tag-attribute pair used by RH when generating HTML5 is <a name="CSH_1">. According to w3school (HTML a tag), the "name" attribute is not supported in HTML5 (they say to use the global id attribute instead). So, I guess that IE simply does not support the name attribute. Obviously, one wonders why TCS uses an attribute which is not part of the HTML5 standard. But there is no use getting into that. ;-) Therefore, my questions would be, in order:

- Is there a way for IE to work properly with the name attribute?

- Is there a way to get FM or RH to export HTML5 using the global attribute?

- Is there an existing way (script?) to replace the name attribute by the global id attribute? If I do it myself, will the mapping mechanism still work?

Error message "Failed importing documents" when publishing book to responsive HTML5

Hi,

I have FM12, version 12.0.3. This is a relatively big book (500 pages, conditional text, around 800 images). I have plenty of hard disk space and memory. All files are opened. Still, 9 times out of 10 (approximately) I have a "failed importing documents" message after a third of the book was processed (not always happening on exactly the same file). Note that the conversion is terribly slow (28 min; around twice as long as when using TCS and Robohelp 11).

My guess is that the guilty ones are the images because they are unfortunately embedded (legacy reasons). With TCS5, Robohelp would crash for the same reason. I had found a script to externalize the graphics (ExtendScript of the week: Externalizing Graphics « TechComm Central by Adobe); but somehow, this script is not working since I updated from 12.0.2 to 12.0.3. This means I cannot test my hypothesis. Although I wrote a few simple scripts, this one is quite complex and would be difficult to debug. Unless anyone here knows what could have changed to make the script useless after such a small update?

I mention the following just in case it's related and may help you: In the publish pod, when I open the Edit window of the Responsive HTML5, and click on style mapping, after a few minutes this message displays :

*Filename* could not be processed

In which of course Filename is one of the files in the book. Again, I don't know why this error happens.

Any idea about these problems?

I am trying to set double sided pagination options in an old FM file, and whatever choice I make, when pressing "Set", this error shows.

I have cleaned weird frames in master page. I have search for this message but haven´t been able to find anything regarding this issue.

What I'm trying to do is split this old document into chapters so it can be easily edited, I need to configure the pages to count even. Am I missing something?

FM12 ahead! but what do I need to warn our tech support about before they try and install?

My manager, who has been pushing (not to say kicking and shoving) on my behalf for some months, has come to my desk and told me that our request for FM12 and whatever-the-latest-CS is has been approved. In fact, even, acted on; so tech support are now ready to install. afaik, I'm due to receive FM12, Acrobat Pro, PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign and Bridge …

Before I let tech support loose, what helpful advice do I need to give them: I seem to remember it's important to install FM before Acrobat, and/or make sure FM does not sneakily install PDF Creator … any other gotchas to be aware of? Also, is it feasible to leave FM10 on the PC for a while so I can get used to FM12 and not find I've hit a problem that stops me working?

Framemaker 8. Landscape Chapters adding blank page every other page.

Hi,

I am currently using FrameMaker 8 to create my book. I have multiple chapters, both Landscape and Portrait. I use Framescript > Scripts > Insert Reports to insert PDF documents into my chapters. I have an excel spreadsheet that has two columns code/pdf file name that the Framscript uses to insert the report. I insert a code into the chapter, and from that code it references the matching PDF file to insert.

I have been running this without any issues until now, because now in the Landscape chapters it is adding a blank page between all my pages. So every other page is blank. For example if the PDF file had 2 pages now I have 2 pages and 2 blank pages. On the blank page I do have a symbol (RS Report Spacer) that appears. I could delete it and the blank page goes away. But this can be troublesome since I have hundreds of pages and every time I run my book the blank pages will reappear.

I have tried Pagination to delete blank pages but to no avail. It does not delete the blank page. The weird part is that for my Portrait chapters this problem does not occur. I am writing this with a small glimmer of hope somebody can help me.

Framemaker 12 unstructured version 12.0.2.389 crashes when trying to print

I have a couple of clients in different companies whom I try to help with FrameMaker related problems on a consultancy basis. They have upgraded to FrameMaker 12 and are now experiecing some problems regarding print. Framemaker 12 unstructured version 12.0.2.389 crashes when trying to print. Sometimes the print dialogue opens when they try to print to pdf and then FM crashes after a little while, but often merely trying to reach the print dialogue makes FM crash. They are both having Acrobat set up as default printers and they are both printing across networks. And they are both having slightly older Acrobat versions than the one coming with latest Technical Communication Suite. I somehow suspect the trouble being related to either printing across networks or the version of Acrobat, but have not been able to solve it. Any ideas anyone?

FontAwesome appears as question marks in FrameMaker 12. I installed the font in the Windows/Fonts folder. Do I need to do something else to get it to work in FM?

I need to update our fonts/templates to Font Awesome. I downloaded and installed the font in the Windows/Fonts folder.

The font appears as question marks (????) in place of the text in FrameMaker 12.

The font appears correctly in other applications, such as Microsoft Word and Outlook.

I tried this with both FontAwesome.otf and fontawesome-webfont.ttf.

Do I need to do something else to get this font to work in FM?

Autonumbering figures off in 2 chapters of book. What should I look for?

Using FM 11. I have a nine-chapter book. The first figure is in Chapter 2; that chapter has only 1 figure. I am using the paragraph tag F:Figure\ <n+>. The figure labels are in text boxes inside the anchored frame with the graphic, but not grouped with the graphic. All the figures are auto-numbering correctly with the following exceptions:

Chapter 3, restarts numbering. First figure should be 2, but it restarts with Figure 1. An easy work around: I entered n=2 on the first figure in the chapter. That corrects all of the figure numbering through Chapter 7 which ends with Figure 55.

Chapter 8 restarts with Figure 1. It should be Figure 55. Chapter 8 has 26 figures.

Chapter 9 is totally off: starts with Figure 47. The 3 figures in the chapter are numbered 47, 48 and 49.

I have checked and double checked the formatting and have one chapter that I use as the "master" chapter – 6 because it has both tables and figures. I have imported the formats from the master chapter (6) to all other chapters. The chapter, pages and tables number correctly through the entire book. The first table is in Chapter 1, the last in Chapter 9.

Where should I look to see what is different in Chapters 8 and 9 and possibly 1? If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Is there a way to not have a paragraph type show up as a cross-reference?

Is it possible to setup a paragraph type as not showing up as a possible cross-reference marker. To have a consisting formatting through out a document I have created a number of paragraph formats. However I do not need these to be able to be select as a cross reference. As it is now, they all show up as a possible cross-reference target and my list of Paragraph Tags in the Cross Reference window is pages long.

FM 11: Chapter numbering is not working. I get blanks!

I am having chapter numbering issues.I am using FM 11. I have h1u set as A:Unit <$chapnum>. with Autonumber format checked. I have tried numbering each individual unit and selecting Update Book. However, the numbers are all reset to blanks. I have tried setting the numbering from the book and the same results. Blanks! How do I fix this?

Preventing resetting of custom table footnotes

In FM 11, I have a problem with table footnotes. The default custom settings for footnote markers are *, then dagger, then double dagger. For various reasons, I cannot use * in the journal I am editing, so I reset the footnotes so that * is not there and dagger is the first option. Many times, however, when I later reopen the file, FM has automatically reset the markers so that * reappears as the first marker. How do I prevent this?

Hello everyone,

We are using FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 (64 bit) platform.

I have found discussions on the Web about this, but so far nothing works for us. As you know, other word processing tools have a hollow bullet as a standard feature. After spending a couple of hours over the past few months researching forums, it appears there is no way to get a true hollow bullet in FrameMaker. Is that correct?

This is what does *not* work for us:

A Courier or Courier New lower case letter "o" (oh). If we could raise it up off the line, it would work. There appears to be no way to lift a character a few pixels off the line.

The symbol you get by pressing Alt+9: ○. When this symbol appears in FrameMaker, it is also needs to be raised up off the line so it doesn't look like the letter "o."

The circular symbol you get when you type a lower case "m" and change the font to Windings 1, because it has shading on the lower right, and also would need to be raised up off the line.

We know how to make any Winding or Webding a bullet. What we want is the standard hollow bullet. Can anyone explain how to do that?

I want to place a variable called "version" and a variable called "name" of a product on the title page (first page in the book) . I use Acrolinx on FM11 and do not (yet) see a schedule for Acrolinx on FM12.

I am trying to decide whether to stay on FM11, or go to FM12 and round-trip through FM11 for usage of Acrolinx.

I am required to use Acrolinx, but I am not required to use FM12.

Hi.

In a FrameMaker book, I have several chapters. When I publish to WebHelp, what I want to see is just each chapter turned in to its own topic. But FrameMaker does is put each topic in its dedicated book (see graphic below). What I'd like to see is one book (5.7 ReleaseNotes) and chapter-based topics beneath it. In short, I'd like to remove the intermediate book layer.

If there's a way to configure this, please advise as to how to do it. It's not clear how to do this from the settings.

Good morning,

I am using FM's Publish command for the first time, producing HTML output. I have a paragraph format that I want to map to an HTML heading with a class attribute (for example, something like <h1 class="x">. For FM paragraphs that map to HTML <p> elements, I can specify a class attribute by selecting an output style in the Style Mappings section of the Publish settings. I can map a paragraph format to a heading element by typing the element name in the User Defined HTML Tag text box. But I'm not able to put the two together. Am I missing a way to do so? Thanks.

Using FM10. Have to create a PDF file only occasionally. Always used the plug-in that came with FrameMaker. We decided to download the trial version of Acrobat X. Used it for awhile but didn't see any great advantages to buying it. For the work we're doing, the Save as PDF feature in FrameMaker worked just fine. So I deleted Acrobat X. Now the distiller is gone as well. I can no longer Save as PDF in FrameMaker. When I try, I get the error message, "To execute 'Save as PDF' command, you must have Acrobat Distiller version 5.05 or higher installed."

How do I get the distiller back?

We purchased and downloaded FrameMaker on-line so I have no CD.

Framemaker 9 install failure on Win 7

I'm trying to install Frame 9 on a new Win 7 machine. I have it running on one Win 7 machine just fine. That machine is being replaced with a new Win 7 machine (same SP level). But, just as the Frame 9 installation almost gets finished, it fails with a pop-up box that says:

Error 1935: An error occurred during the installation of assembly component

{98CB24AD-52FB-DB5F-A01F-C8B3B9A1E18E}.

HRESULT: 0x80070BC9.

Any ideas what I need to fix to get Frame 9 to install?

Adding the Trademark symbol to a document

I want to add the trademark symbol (TM) in my document. I added it to the Reference page in the Character Macros table (like they said in the Adobe help file). But, what next? How do I insert it in the document? I don't see it listed in the Character Designer list.

FrameMaker 12.0.3.424, Acrobat XI Pro 11.0.09.

Using Save As PDF from FrameMaker to generate PDF from book file. In the PDF Setup Dialog, using CMYK option generates a PDF but colors are muted. Using RGB generates PDF with good colors, but one image appears as gray. This image is a JPG, imported by reference and also used in other documents. Image appears in PDF if CMYK is used. Is this a bug or is there another setting that needs to be adjusted? Thanks in advance....

How to best paginate a book

Hi,

Here's what I have: A book comprising seven files. But, the files aren't so much chapters as chunks of content.

What I want to do: If content in a file ends on an odd page, start the next file on the next even page.

What doesn't work: I can use chapter-level pagination to delete empty pages and set the starting side as next available. So, if file (chapter) 1 ends on page 7, then the beginning of the next file will indeed be page 8. BUT, the beginning of the next file uses a right-hand master page, so it uses a right page layout for a left page.

Cannot find default printer - FM10 Win7

Hi, Does anyone know how to fix this? I get a message on startup that FM cannot find a default printer and that I should set one in the control panel. So I go to the control panel, where the check mark indicates Adobe PDF is the default printer, and I change it to a real printer in the office and go back to FM and try to print, but I get the same message, cannot find default printer and I am unable to print.

Is there any history of this problem?

Bridging Framemaker and Google Docs for team collaboration

Hello all,

Our company uses Google docs extensively for all types of documentation.

As the technical writer, I am the odd one out. Now, management tasked me with finding a way to bridge Framemaker [draft] content with Google docs. The reason is to provide the Engineers with a way to review and edit documents on a OS agnostic (and commonly used) platform.

Unfortunately, Google docs isn't making this the least bit easy! In particular, Google docs severely limits PDF to gdocs conversion to about 10 pages. Even using Acrobat's Split Document tool (and then splitting the document into many smaller parts), I am still missing many pages!

This has become a huge dilemma!

Any ideas are appreciated.

We have a document ( 140 Pages long), which has a fixed text , chapters and also need to be produced 100+ variations of that doc based on variables for each book.

We are building a database of variables and the values they take for each book.

What we want to know is , Does Frame maker can take these variable values embedded into the doc ? if yes, what kind of interfaces are supported CSV, XML etc to take variables

I have started trying to publish my documents to HTML5 via FM11's Publish pod.

The output is quite good but when I try and create a book, or more than one file, I just get X FrameMaker book files could not be found.

Any ideas?

Anchored frames - "below current line" option after shrinkwrap

When you shrinkwrap the graphic anchored frames in FM, the anchor position moves to "at insertion point" instead of staying at "below current line". This was not the default behavior with previous FrameMaker versions (before FM 11).

Have you heard of any hotfix or workaround for this issue?

The files are on a networked drive. Win7. FM 8. I've renamed files. Regenerated. Created a new book. Nothing works.

I do have hyphens and underscores in the file names but no other special characters.

Need help urgently.

The error message is:

Cannot find file named

\SOL\Data\TechDocs\DRAFT\Shiva\OperatorManual\096-0461-001C-1.

fm.

Make sure that the file exists.

Note that the TOC and INDEX are listed in the book w/o a path while the body chapter has the entire path (above) listed in the book view.

Inserting existing page from one document to another

Hi,

I have 2 documents. The first one is 4 pages and all pages are 8.5" x 11". The second document is 1 page and is 8.5" x 14".

Is it possible to insert the 8.5" x 14" page from the second document into the first document, but make it the 4th page? (therefore making the original 4th page in the first document the 5th page...it's a revision history table so it has to be on the last page and I would prefer the 8.5" x 14" page (a flow chart) to come before it.

How do I move FrameMaker 12 license to a new PC

I have FrameMaker 12 (purchased, not subscribed) and will be swapping my PC tomorrow (newer model). In the past, I used Help->Deactivate prior to uninstalling Frame to avoid a call to support. But my FrameMaker 12 does not have a Deactivate option. What steps should I take to ease reinstallation on the new PC?

Installed new motherboard in computer and now FM10 says it needs to reactivate but has reached its activation limit. Had this problem once before a couple years ago and there was a phone number to call at Adobe to resolve the issue. The new Adobe web support system won't even get to a contact-us page, it keeps recycling back to "select your product" page. Need adobe phone number to get my copy of Framemaker 10 to reactivate.

I have a 32 inch monitor with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, Framemaker 12, and the size of the icons in the menu bar is microscopic

I have changed to the larger icon size in options. When I reduce the resolution to half its ok, but Framemaker is a design product and should be able to handle monitors greater than 22 inches. I have no problem like this with Versions 10 and 11.

Any idea what I can do?

I am using unstructured FM 11. I want to create unique Parts List tables. I want the heading rows to come pre-populated with Part Number, Source, Nomenclature (and others as needed). I create the table and its format. I populate the cells as I want. Then save the table as the name/format I want. However, I go to insert a new table with that name, and all the cells are blank. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

I have two licenses for FrameMaker 8. One of them is for the copy I have installed on my PC at work, which I use every day. I have no idea where the other license is. I'm on my third PC since I've been working here, so for all I know, the license was activated on one of those PCs and I didn't think to deactivate it before IT came and hauled away the old one.

I called Adobe customer support and the guy I spoke to told me that Adobe can't deactivate licenses, only I can. So I asked him to explain how I can do that. He said that I had to do it from the PC where I had activated it. I explained that the old PC was gone and I had no access to it. Tech support guy says, "We already gave you an extra license back in 2010, so I can't give you any more." What? Who's asking for extra licenses? I simply want to deactivate one of the ones that seems to be in use (but in reality, it is not) so I can install FrameMaker on another machine. A trial license isn't an option - I want to be able to use this indefinitely.

I can't believe this kind of situation hasn't happened before with an Adobe product. Do they really have no procedure for deactivating a license when the customer has lost track of where it was activated, or no longer has access to it? I can't be the only person who has forgotten to deactivate a license when upgrading PCs.

Can anyone help?

Trouble MIF washing FM 12

Okay, what am I missing? When I save my mif back as fm, I open the fm, I see the mif-text.

1) Save as MIF (for FM 12). I make sure the extension is .mif.

2) File > Open. I select the .mif file and ctrl+click Open and select the default to access the mif text. So far so good.

3) Without making changes to the mif (cos am just testing), I use File > Save as and choose document 12.0 (.fm) and change the extension to .fm.

An .fm file is the result, but when I open it in FrameMaker I only see text as though looking at the mif source.

Thoughts?

How to set up bleeds?

Hi,

I have a bleed on one edge of my page. I can extend the image 1/8 inch off the page, but am uncertain whether doing so will produce the desired result for the print vendor because I cannot see it in FM12. Am distributing a PDF, is this the best way to set up a bleed?

Missing System Variables - FM11

Yesterday I added a new variable to one FM file then noticed most of my system variables had disappeared. Now even when opening any other file, or even starting a new file, most of the system variables are missing. Suggestions? FM11 v 11.0.2.384

Auto-generating chapter TOCs

I have been searching around on the Internet to find an automated solution to the following manual process:

Generate and update an entire book.
Manually generate each chapter TOC to get the page numbers and headings correct in the chapter TOC. This means open each chapter, generate the TOC,save and close.
Generate and update the entire book again to make sure the imported TOC files were all updated properly in each file.
Spot check to make sure step 3 didn't add pages I didn't expect and thus made the chapter level TOC out of date.
Possibly do steps 1 - 4 a second time.

From what I have read, it seems that I need a Frame script to automate this process. Are there any other solutions? If not, can someone recommend a scripting provider?

This is for an unstructured book.

FrameMaker 12 UI is unusable on my laptop's screen but OK on an external monitor

When I use FrameMaker 12 on my laptop with an external monitor, it looks great. But if I use it on my laptop's screen it's unusable. Menus and icons are too small, some UI elements are missing or drawn incorrectly, and some dialogs don't appear after I select a command. The documents' contents look fine. It's just the FrameMaker UI elements that look wrong. And yes, I've tried Control-L. Any idea what the problem could be?

FWIW, I'm using a Dell Inspiron 15 (7537, Mid 2013) running Windows 8.1 with FrameMaker 12.0.3.424 with the unstructured interface. Here's a picture of what the UI looks like:

How to make text unconditional

I am writing a program to delete condition tag.

But if any text is tagged with the tag I'm deleting,

I need to make the text unconditional.

Can some one tell me how to do this?
