What's the background of making Adobe Audition?

It's a rhetorical question.

As I can see, Adobe Audition is a poser software, not for doing things efficiently, but just to pose with Adobe family. This family is too big and no one is a outstanding.

Maybe Premiere, but that's another story.

I was a long time user of Sony Vegas (which has an excellent flow). But the new employer has a licence of Adobe Audition CS6 only.

Things are just weird in Adobe Audition CS6. The workflow is pain in the a**. Not very logical. Even the most simple things, like scrolling horizontally, make me sick.

Not to mention shortcuts and settings. I'm surprised, that there are any at all. Then menu entries... really?

I could go with a list, but Audition makers won't understand it.

I guess the programmers are without any practical knowledge of editing.

Think guys, there are some very efficient audio editors/trackers out there. Watch and learn. Or better, get you own ideas!!!

Audition CS6 does not exit properly on OSX Maverick - how to resolve?

I run Audition CS6 on OSX Maverick (10.9.5).

However, whenever I finish a job and exit the application, whenever I bring up a terminal I see the following processes permanently in the process table:

The application seems not to be exiting properly.

Is there a fix for this?

Note that all other applications run well on this high spec MacBook Pro (early 2011, 17", Quad iCore7 2.3GHx, 16GB RAM, 512 GB SSD).

I do not wish to go the Cloud model - so upgrading to CC is not an option.

Applying an effects rack preset...

Is there a way to have effects individual windows open automatically when applying an effects rack preset?

I find it most frustrating when mastering for broadcast, where i use an EQ, Compressor, Exciter, Limiter, WLM & PAZ meter in a preset with (to quickly add them all to the rack with a couple clicks) that i have to open each effect from the rack individually, and drag every effect window as they open on top of each other.

Is there a way to change this i'm not aware of? I have the option "Open effects settings when adding effects to the effects rack" selected in preferences.

Hei!

It would be very practical and productive, if the naming in "Markers Panel" would work in such a way (so the feature can be turned on/off in Preferences):

For example,

Already added markers (marker name):

1. A_01_01

2. A_01_02

3. A_01_03

If i add new marker (hitting M), Audition will name this: A_01_04. Naming a marker depends what name have previous (last marker name in list) marker. It adds +1 to last digit.

If i add new marker to the list with different name: BC0005, naming starts again. Hitting "M", the new marker name will be BC0006, and list looks like this:

1. A_01_01

2. A_01_02

3. A_01_03

4. A_01_04

5. BC0005

6. BC0006

If i add new marker in timeline between 3-4, then i have to name this my self. It still remembers last one in the list: "BC0006".

It's a little absurd that such a sophisticated piece of audio software does not allow this simple function. Audacity has it and so should Audition!

Sure, it;s possible in multitrack mode and also through one's audio interface, however when recording directly to a file via Soundflower or other internal routing software these solutions do not apply.

Is there a single-motorused-fader control surface - eg Presonus Faderport - that can interface CS6 via USB? I don't want to give up money and real estate to an MCU- or Logic-type multi-fader drsign. The Faderport looks perfect for post-production and overdubbing, but has the dev team ever tried it with the current CS6 release?

I have recently built a DAW on an effects rack with a TASCAM Rack-mount sound interface that came with Cubase LE 5. The computer, which I built myself, is permanently attached and the thing rolls. I plan on using the DAW for on-set recording for making short films as well as for music scoring. Cubase is great, only thing is that it is 32 bits and has memory limitations which can easily be reached if you stack enough samplers and NI Guitar Rig buses. Also, it takes more time to set up each track than Audition or Reaper, which matters a lot when doing live recording.

I am a Creative Cloud subscriber (have been since it was offered).

Is there a timeline to add VSTi and MIDI to Adobe Audition CC? Thanks.

2 microphones recording to Audition

I use Sennheiser wireless XLR lavalier mics to record 2 people during training videos and they are awesome. However, I've been using a Blue Snowball in an acoustic box for LMS voiceovers [audio only, same project]. I record in Audition because it allows me to lay down markers, and that's what I use for post, anyway.

I would like to know if it's possible to use 2 lavalier mics to record directly into Audition on my MacBook Pro instead. If the people don't get close enough to the Snowball, the recording is not always as clear as with the Sennheiser lavs on the videos. And it definitely doesn't have the same tone. Plus, it records identical L and R tracks, unlike the video tracks.

I'd like to replicate the sound for voiceovers. I don't necessarily need to use the Sennheiser lavs [they are XLR] but would consider buying additional mics and/or adapters if I can figure out how to record from two mics directly into my laptop.

I thought this would be a no-brainer, but didn't come up with much on the web.

I know I can use a Zoom or something similar, but then I'd be left without markers to let me know where to cut, etc. I like to do all of my basic edits [noise reduction, amplification, etc.] in one large file, then chop it into individual clips and do final edits [breathing, lip smacks, etc] in those. Otherwise it would take forever.

Any ideas? And thanks in advance.

Split clips in multi-track view while playing

Why can't you split clips in Audition CC while playing the audio like you could in older versions of Audition. As a radio producer i need to be clipping audio very quick while I'm listening through the audio. You can select a section of a clip and split-delete while playing, why not a simple split?

Also when you do select a part of a clip and delete (still in multi-rack mode) why does audition then select both end of the clip remaining automatically? Usually when you do this you are tightening up gaps so when you go to grab the right side split audio to move in the left side moves as well. I know its a simple click away and re-selct process, but gets annoying whe you are doing a lot of them and i can see no reason why you would want to default to having them both selected.

Export Markers Naming Options

I would love to see some more robust naming options when exporting markers to files. The addition of prefix and postfix fields comes in handy, but it would be fantastic if I could create my own separator instead of being stuck with the underscore. I frequently have to batch out my files, then open a second program to batch rename all of my files to simply remove or replace the underscores.

As a bit of an after-thought. It would also be wonderful to be able to modify the default name of my markers -- or to be able to find/replace across all marker names to for instance remove the word "Marker" and only leave the digits behind.

I feel silly, but I cannot let pride waste valuable time. I have downloaded the trial version of Audition CC 2014 and I cannot use any of the edit tools in the tool bar. I need to select, cut and save. Nothing really techy. Just basic stuff for a client doing training audios, no music. Can anyone tell me how to use the tool bar or make the inactive tools active please?

Feature request: MIDI, or Rewire support. I reckon MIDI's more organic/integral to Audition development than Rewire support? The ability to record in MIDI and then bounce the track down to wav would be a very useful step. If it's not too much trouble, that is. I have little idea of the big picture, after all.

Hi! I salute you all!

First of all I want to excuse my english (it's not my native language)!

In 2014 we are dealing with thousands of files (video, audio, etc.), because of the present powerful technology, still... we are missing very important and useful parts for doing our jobs properly and very quickly!

In this case is Adobe Audition too, in my oppinion!

Adobe Audition is a great program, which help us to edit in many ways our audio files, but... unfortunatelly has major missing parts, which would be nice to be implemented as soon as possible!

Some of them are are right below this line:

1. AutoTrim (for removing silences from audio files, before and after)

2. Include Subfolders From A Folder (when adding a folder for working with, we should have the possibillity to add its subfolders too)

3. Preserve Subfolder Structure (when exporting a folder with its all subfolders, we should have the possibillity to export the exact structure like the original)

4. Auto Shut Down Computer (when all the tasks/jobs are done, we should be able to auto close the program and auto shut down our desktop/laptop as well)

When you will add these features which are so wanted, to have them all in Batch Processing mode and Match Volume mode as well, please?!

Many other audio softwares have all of these "old" possibillities, like "GoldWave" for instance (I am not advertising it at all), but the Adobe Audition which is more complex...doesn't so far!

I thank you all and I really wait for these very next future feature requests!

Search sound effects from within Audition?

I have about 50gb of sound effects that are sorted in various folders by publisher. They're all in one big sound effects folder on my server. How can I search within Audition, sample them, spot them to the playhead without importing them into Audition first?

Browsing in the Finder or Bridge is awkward or slow or both. There's a search filter once you've added the clip to the project, but not one to search via metadata in the sound effect file.

Soundtrack has this feature and so does Final Cut and ProTools. Am I missing something?

Allow user to add icons for effects to the task bar

I am a mastering engineer and regularly use effects and plugins. Favorites are nearly useless to me because I need to set the effects' setting differently for each use. I would like to be able to click an icon for an effect to have it open for use. Repeatedly using the menues (or keyboard shortcuts - which are not often available) to open an effect or VST plugin is tedious at best.

Please help. Prevoious versions of Audition had this and its removal has been a burden.

What happened to processing an effect to end of view while in edit mode????

Back when Audition was Cool Edit Pro, they had an option while adding effects while in Edit Mode that would let you highlight a section of the waveform, add an effect say like an echo, then would allow to process that effect to the end of view. That was a beautiful thing.... Since Adobe took over, that has been missing. I can't believe I was the only one out there that used this option. It was a HUGE time saver!!! Say like I want to add an echo to only one word. I could highlight that word, add the echo, then have the word echo past the highlighted area until it faded completely, or reached the end of the view. Now, I have to highlight that word, cut and paste it into a new track, then go back into edit mode, extend silence to the end of the file, add the echo effect, go back to multitrack mode and then mixdown the 2 files. This is rediculous and time consuming. Am I missing that option somewhere or does it not exist?? Or maybe someone out there has a better way to do it??? Or better yet....ADD THAT OPTION BACK IN!!!!

I have created the greetings and exported them directly to mp3, but when uploading them to our pbx system, I felt that the quality wasn’t all that.

When scanning long takes, I wish we had a feature to assign a key when clicked, it would advance the playhead X amount of seconds, my choice to determine, AND keep playing.

So i might touch one key, jump 30 sec. at a time, or 50, i decide in prefs or somewhere and keep playing. How about hit a number key and jump? 5 = 50 sec jump, etc., like that?

I was planning not to post anymore here, but then someone in another thread mentioned the idea of a "consumer/amateur" version of Audition, so:

Sorry if this has been requested before in this forum, but after reading about the upcoming CC version I'd be happy if the following were available:

A stand-alone (not cloud-bound, not monthly-payment) low-price and simple-to-use consumer version of Audition - let's call it Audition Elements.

Edit view only, no Multitrack view, no tools associated with multitracking
All the Edit-view tools of CC plus those missing since Audition 3.0
No CD burning, but would of course be a welcome addition
Other pro-features like scripting could also be optional
Fast file opening, analysis, and display as CS6/CC

In short, a simple editor/analyzer/converter for mono, stereo and multichannel audio for all kinds of audio formats. Is anything like that planned?

This would fit my needs perfectly. Maybe some other people's as well.

It would be so great if Audition supported MMC, Midi Machine Control over a network, so that I could synch playback between other applications on other machines, and use a VTR to handle video playback on another computer.

Audition is so good for editing, I don't think it should bother with music composition, which is handled well by so many other programs, but rather just let us synch playback with them.

Using a VTR over a network is very efficient, and it would be great if Audition could work this way too.

As Audition gets more features hod-rodded from PP, why not add the insert/overwrite as well?

I often need to insert audio into a project, which means pushing all the tracks in the timeline back to make way for it. This is exactly how PP does it when using the insert button in the source monitor. Currently in Audition, when wanting to insert audio (in multitrack view), it will only overwrite, not insert.

Each time I have to resort to a work-around. I'm sure there must be others who have to do this regularly as well. Am I right?

Don't you guys (staff) miss Cool Edit Pro's editing?

Hi, devs.
You guys might want to do some research on how all the former Cool Edit Pro users felt about the introduction of Audition's new way of navigating the interface. (referring to how you left and right-click in the standard edit view, and do that type of basic editing.) I haven't used Cool Edit Pro in long enough that my memory might not be 100% accurate, but I do at least remember never getting used to the new Audition-style gestures... (even when I switched back to the old-style right-clicking.)

Some of Audition's editing has bothered me for a long time. Audition surely brought advances to Cool Edit Pro, but it seems that a few of the most important things also took a slide.

Now that CS6 once again defaults to the Cool Edit Pro right-click (really nice), other oddities have arisen, like: when your sound is playing, left-clicking to change position does nothing at all, at least as far as I can tell. It puts a dotted line, but nothing can be done with it. If a sound is currently playing, the only way to jump to a different location is to completely stop the audio, click somewhere else, then play again. (Is that slow, or is that slow?) I think this at least needs some options under Preferences>>Playback.

Another angle to look at this is: find out if the majority of the Audition staff even like these changes, vs. Cool Edit Pro's style. I don't see how they could, at least if they were ever comfortable with Cool Edit Pro.

Update: (Also, what about using middle-mouse-click to move the Playhead (current playing location) without losing your selection? Currently, you have to click that bar at the top, which most users probably won't discover, unless they follow an actual training course. You need to find a way to get these things across to people, or the vast, vast majority of users - like myself - will be editing in "this program is junk" mode. I don't think it's junk, but that doesn't stop me from often having a hard time with new things that require psychic insight to understand.

Users aren't psychic. If you don't explain to them how to use features, then those features don't exist. (and if they aren't going to go out and find training material themselves, or read the help files, then you either have to provide something up-front yourself, or you're ruined. I think too many companies dont understand this. Autodesk seems to, providing videos that show the basics, right on the bootup Welcome Screen. I think that's very important.)

Quick-select effect buttons on the workspace

Please add the ability for a user to place quick-select buttons on the workspace for favored effects, including installed VST effects. It is too cumbersome to pull the threaded effects menu down everytime I want to choose one of my VST (or other) effects. And no, I do not want to add them to the favorites menue. That executes them. I just want to open them from the workspace...not a menue.

In both Audition CS5.5 and CS6, when the user inserts multiple files into a multitrack session, they are placed on multiple tracks. (As the help file says, "The files are inserted on separate tracks at the current time position"). Please change this to allow multiple files to be inserted onto a single track.

I can understand the usefulness of the current behaviour in some scenarios, but there are other workflows in which the placement of multiple files on multiple tracks is a serious hindrance.

E.g. In this thread, a user mentions needing to insert 10,000 individual files for dialogue editing and mixing.

I also posted in that thread because my own workflow involves editing hundreds of individual files, which are single notes recorded for the production of virtual instruments.

The reason why a "one-track multitrack" workflow is useful to me is that it allows great flexibility in processing multiple files individually or at once, comparing them, adding markers, fades, etc.

It would also be useful when bringing in any audio that has been recorded in consecutive chunks - field recordings, concerts, Foley sessions, etc.

In the thread, another user suggested inserting all the files onto a single track in Premiere Pro, then bringing that project into Audition as a multitrack session. Unfortunately this creates another problem for me, because it renames all the audio with the suffix "extracted". My workflow requires me to keep the original file names, because these are used downstream when mapping the recorded notes in the virtual instrument.

Audition iPad application

Does anyone know if there is plan of adobe to make an audition application for iPad. There seem to be a few applications that offer audio editing but none have multitrack mixing and editing capabilities. It would really be very helpful to have this app on the road. Thanks, Spiridon Nanos fireworks

Fix pitch correction/shifting

The current pitch shifting algorithms seem to be flawed. Small minuite(but obvious) artifacts are introduced into the stream. It seems like the algorithm works on small blocks of the audio then patches them together wrong.

Wavelab uses the dirac algorithm and it seems to work flawlessly

Effect rack presets recordable in favourites

It would be very helpful to be able to record as a favourite the instantiation and application of a rack effect preset.

The reason is that a user may audition a series of effects in the rack, before wishing to apply them as a batch process to multiple files.

Using the same rack preset in a favourite would be much easier than the current method of reopening the effects one by one in the course of recording a favourite.

Spectral Colors and Freq/Notes CS6

What happenedt to the Spectral Colors Window from Au3?

I can't find any way that lets me change the spectral windows colors from the problematic high intensity fire/red to something more usable for pitch analysis(One could increase the contrast drastically before)?

Also, there seems to be no way to see the pitch or freq at the cursor. In Au3 at least the freq was shown where the cursor was. It would be nice to be able to see the pitch and frequency of the cursor. It's nice to have the pitches for the y-axis but I would like the ability to see what the frequency and pitch are at the cursor both in the spectral and frequency analysis windows.

Any 24 bit recording is contained within 32 bit?

Hi, I'm new to Audition and have just tried to use it.

I've asked something about Audition and I've got the below answer.

"Audition's internal format is 32 floating point. Any 24 bit recording is contained within that."

However, I can not understand how 24 bit is matched to 32 bit.

The above answer means...If I record something using 24 bit A/D Soundcard then the signal is shifted 8 bit ?

And I'd like to know why the limit of sample values is -2^23 ~ 2^23 even though I use 32 bit signal. (As I think, it sould be -2^31 ~ 2^31)

Questions about Audition features

Hi, I'm new to Audition and have just tried to use it.

1. I tried to record something using soundcard(Audio interface) which support 24 bit A/D.

And I 've had question, how to check the recorded signal is 24 bit or not in Audition.

I found the sample values showed below, but when I opened other signal has different bit, the limit of showing sample values was same.. (2^23)

(If I opened 32 bit signal, then it must be 2^31 but it didn't)

2. I'd like to know there is feature that could adjust input gain level. As I know, I can adjust the output level in Multitrack View.

But I can not find how to adjust input level in Multitrack View.

I can adjust level after recording is finished, but I do not know how to adjust input level while I recording.
