Adding markers to RED footage in Prelude

Hey everyone, I was hoping to find a way to add markers to my RED footage without having to transcode it during ingestion. All my footage is kept on a separate drive from my computer. Two separate computers can pull from this drive so I'd love to avoid the transcode process to save me some time and allow me to edit everything RAW. Anyone have a work around to this process they know about?

Hi,

Although I managed to find out how to create custom markers in Prelude, I`m not able to change their color once I`ve created them. They seem to be linked to the marker I used to create my custom marker (hope that makes sense). They also do not show up in the marker preference setting.

What am I doing wrong here?

Not sure why, but among my default markers I only have three types appearing in Prelude:

Automating SxS XAVC ingest on set

I shoot with a Sony F5 camera on SxS card in the XAVC format. Can I use Prelude on set to automatically backup and ingest my daily's when I connect the SxS card to my Macbook pro? I also need to make a lowres H.264 file on the end of the day containing al of the footage shot that day with timecode burned in. Can I setup Prelude or Encoder to automate this proces? Is it possible to set it up so that all individual clips on the SxS card are put together in one H.264 file with original timecode burned in?

Yes... i've searched the forums and have seen all the threads on creating the folder 2.0 or whatever.

Every other application works except for Prelude. Adobe... can you assist with this?

The software is basically useless if I am unable to ingest media.

I have a client who has a full length documentary on bluray that he wants to cut down for other uses without going back to the original edit. I ripped the M2ts files from the bluray and have made subclips of the entire program with decent notes on each scene. What I want to do is to be able to show my client the information that you see in the "Marker List" window in a spreadsheet. This would be fantastic. It shows a thumbnail, the in and out points, the shot title and a description.

Has anyone got a good workflow for doing this same kind of thing? If so.. I'd love to hear how and what you did. I ended up making screen grabs of the marker list window and cropping them in photoshop and then saving as pdfs and sent those to my client.... but this is NOT efficient. Ideas?

3 Questions: Docking Panels, Find doesn't work

Hello, I am relatively new to Prelude and I have three questions.

-First for some reason I no longer can move the panels to other positions and lock them in. That little hot spot tab is missing ??

-Secondly, The finder in the project panels isn't finding anything I enter (names of clips, subclass, comments. What am I doing wrong?

-Thirdly the Marker Type panel used to show five types of markers and now is only showing three (Subclip, Comment, and Speech Transcription.).

I have tried resetting the workspace, close and reopen the application and even reboot my computer.. Nothing helps.

I am currently using the latest version .. Prelude cc 2014.

I am on a mid 2010 iMac with OS X Yesomite..

keyboard shortcuts not working in Prelude CC 2014.1

Not sure why but none of my keyboard shortcuts are working in Prelude CC 2014.1

For example, I can't use the Cmnd + right/left arrow to move forward or backward from one marker to the next. The keyboard shortcut even in the menu is actually greyed out:

I discovered a really odd issue today when prepping some files to import into Prelude CC 2014. When I selected a folder with some files, they started loading then suddenly started flickering. In the folder listing next to the thumbnails the folder was flickering as well. This only happened with some folders and not others. It didn't happen with the folders on my memory card connected via card reader but it did happen to my internal drive and an external drive.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the file location, but the files in the folder.

I think it has something to do with files that already have had the .pek files created for them.

The problem appears to have fixed itself when I deselected the option in the preferences from saving media cache files next to originals when possible. I also cleaned the Media Cache Database.

Here's the info for my system:

Macbook Pro Retina

Internal SSD hard drive

External G-Tech G-Drive Mobile USB (USB3)

SDHC memory card plugged into internal memory card reader

Files in the folders that worked were a variety of .jpg, .mp4, .mov, and a lot of others

Files in the folders that didn't were pretty much all the same files but some had .pek files with them already or had previously been imported into Prelude or Premiere.

Some of the files that were in the folders that worked fine had been created or imported into Prelude or Premiere so I honestly don't know what the problem is. What I see happening is like Prelude goes to read through the files, something has a problem, it restarts the process, repeat, repeat, repeat. I can hit "cancel" or select a different folder and it will stop the refresh/flicker problem.

When I view the folder in Finder while this is happening, I can see the .pek and another one or two files appearing and disappearing as the flicker/refreshing is happening in Prelude.

Conform files filling up hard drives, Prelude unusable.

Literally conformed until there was a MB left on the drive.

I am getting multiple multiple multiple duplicates of the .pek and .cfa files when Prelude conforms. And after changing hard drives, etc..

When I turn off the automatic conform I get no audio.

There has to be a better way! Why can't we just get rid of those conform files and have your programs just read the audio file?

How does everyone else handle this?

Multiple bins simultaneously

When using prelude I often redistribute all clips in different bins according to their content. In order to do that it would be nice to have both the thumbnail view and the bins open simultaneously in order to drag and drop to different bin windows, a bit like moving files on different folders.

I wonder if there's a way to do this, I end up using list view to be able to watch all bins simultaneously.

Maybe there's a better workflow, I accept tips.

So I have attached my script to my clip. Click on Analyse Content and click okay. Adobe Media Encoder opens and runs and completes but nothing else happens. I go back over to Prelude and there are no additional markers in my clip. Any thoughts?

I'm using a mac pro 2010, osx 10.9.5 with firewire audio through mackie onyx 1220i. I'm logging footage off a usb3 external (at usb2 speed since I dont have usb3 on my mac pro 2010), The audio will consistently drop out when using JKL scrub (particularly back scrub with J) and when it comes back it cause a loud pop, the kind that makes you worried your speakers are going to blow, like when you turn off a synth at full volume before turning it down on the mixer. Super worried about this issue and Prelude possibly blowing my speakers. Seems like a bug?

Using XDCAM HD proxy files

We are trying to find the most appropriate and stable workflow with our XDCAM HD material. We find that Prelude takes a long time to process the thumbnails and give access to the material on disks after we click "Ingest" when we have a XDCAM disk inserted that has lots of material on it. Its quite unusable.

It seems to be that Prelude looks at the MXFs on the disk and attempts to work with only the HD media. What I'd like to know is, is there any way to have Prelude use the proxy files for clip selection, and then import the full hires material when you select "ingest"?

We're basically finding it too slow to be useful. What we'd like is to use it in the same way as we used to use the old Sony XDCAM Transfer application with Final Cut Pro, if anyone is familiar with that.

moving clips between bins

I am finding media management in prelude a real pain.

After ingesting my H264 head cam material, I often need to sort and move the rushes into appropriate bins.

I find this takes ages with with Prelude CC 3.1 why?

I also have to often start new (monthly) projects because of the long delay opening old (large) projects.

Is there a way to open project without it taking ages looking for all of the media therein referenced?

As I have many projects for this year, how can I do a search through several? Is there any way of combining or referencing other projects, or having 2 open at a time to move clips between?

I can transcode my AVCHD files to DNxHD in Media Encoder, but when I ingest through Prelude, Media Encoder Fails.

I am instructing students working on longer form projects to transcode their AVCHD material to Quicktime using the DNxHD codec (which is installed, and then preset loaded into Media Encoder).

I am doing this since it is the suggested workflow in this article:

Audio and Video glitches | AVCHD footage

It worked great last year in CS6, but this workflow is not working at all in CC2014.

When I transcode directly through Media Encoder, the process works fine, but if I ingest using Prelude (where students choose which files to transcode, set destination, etc) the transcoding fails and we get an AME error. Not sure why this would be any different than transcoding right into Media Encoder...

We are working on PCs running Windows 7.

Any suggestions?

Sending transcoded clip to Premiere Pro with Mono audio

I noted that others had asked this question around August 2013 but haven't seen any progress made on this issue, which is that we prefer to edit in Premiere pro with mono audio tracks, but we are unable to make transcoded material come over from Prelude with mono audio.

We need to have total control over our audio tracks and for us in a News/ENG environment that also means fast turnaround production. So we want to choose the part of the XDCAM clip that we want in Prelude, send it to Premiere Pro and put the interview grab (for example) down on track 1 of the Timeline with only talent mike audio (which was recorded on the camera's channel 1) and not have to pan it or worry about doing much else to it. Then we cut the rest of the overlay with sound effects that were recorded on channel 2 going straight to track 2 on the timeline. When we transmit it to head office we send them two discrete channels of audio: talent/VO on Track 1 and effects on Track 2.

We only have a problem when Transcoding is involved. With the audio prefs in PrPro set to "Mono" everything else is fine, its just that when Prelude transcodes a video it makes the audio a hassle for us, because it can only come over to PrPro as a stereo audio track.

Adobe, is there ever going to be the ability to just make a Preference in Prelude to send the clips with Mono audio, as there is in Premiere Pro??

Or has anyone figured this out and I am just missing something?

Can't find ingested files

Recently ingested a group of .mov files, but decided I didn't need them in the project, so I cleared them. Now I do need to ingest them into the project, but every time I try, I get a error flag saying the files are already ingested. But they are not in any of the bins I've created for the project, and can't seem to get them to re-ingest. I'm running the new Yosemite OS on a Mac Book Pro. Thanks.

CC2014 - MTS files not ingesting

I just tried importing some MTS files (without transcoding), and no dice.

The error reported was: Cannot import the file "filename.MTS"

These are the same files I've used in a previous Premiere project. I was able to import an MPEG2 file with no problems.

I have ingested a stereo MXF file (Canon C300) into the recent 2014.1 release of Prelude (3.1.0 (128) build).

Then I made a rough cut and placed the MXF in there.

Now I try to add external audio tracks from the sound recordist (24-bit multichannel .WAV) by either:

- drag and dropping the external audio file (doesn't work)

- right-clicking on the audio to add via the context menu (Add track... option doesn't show up).

Now I'm wondering: is this feature, as announced here: Prelude Help | New features summary really in there?

I just completed a shoot that consisted mostly of footage shot at 60p, 1080p. I am shooting AVCHD on a Panasonic GH3. I am attempting to transcode my footage into Apple ProRes 422 LT while maintaining my 60fps frame rate and 1080p resolution. However, the only 60p option I see is at 720p. Is there a way to keep my 60p footage in 1080p as Apple Prores?

I usually shoot in 24p with no problems ingesting, so this 60p business is foreign to me. Any advice is appreciated.

How can i turn Prelude into a complex search criteria logging software

Hellow to everybody...

I need to set up Prelude so that it gets a video database of Thousands of quicktime videos and turn them into a video database by adding keywards on each of them

For example ( City name, camera model, Day or Night, Close up etc...)

The problems i got into are the following

1) i cannot find a way ( either using markers,or metadata ) so that the Title (City) turns into a Prelude collumn ( idont mind the field to be editable but to be able to be sorted

2) when i write on the bin's search field keywords such as 5d ( camera model ) it finds not only the clips that i have previously marked as 5d but also any other that contain the world or even part of it

3) I find no way to make an advance (boolean tyoe) search like (City,Day) (not even doing a 2 pass search, (City - isolates the clips having the city name i search for) and with them sorted , to add a second search criteria - it resets the search to the second one)

A) I understand that Prelude is not a database application but is there any cheat to the above scenario..?

B) Please dont give me the use the Premiere new search bins feature. (it needs to be done inside Prelude)

P.S wouldn't this be a good feature request ?

I have a client that is just starting to use Creative Cloud and Premier Pro.

When the client attempts to use Prelude to ingest, he attempts to transcode, selects quicktime, but does not see the Apple ProRes codec

I have two computers where the export settings I make in AME doesn't show up in Prelude, the prores presets I have downloaded from Adobe doesn’t show up either. I have tried to uninstall Prelude but it didn’t help.

I found this thread: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1410827 but it didn’t help me.

The machines are two Mac Pro (Early 2008), 2 x 2.8 GHz, 4GB RAM

These are the only machine I have this problem with.

Just installed the latest version of Prelude CC 2014 (3.1.0) this morning and I'm trying to set simple In/Out points before I ingest some footage, but "I" and "O" don't seem to be responding. Am I missing something here?

Markers disappear on Panasonic footage

I spent a whole day with speech transcriptions on several different clips from a Panasonic camera. After closing Prelude and opening it the next day, all the markers were gone.

The clips are basic Panasonic footage, where they are recorded inside a "Contents" folder, and inside there are different folders, like Video for video, Audio for audio, and Clip for the XML files that tie the both together, with additional metadata information. Both Video and Audio files are in the MXF contender.

I had read that Prelude, upon the creation of markers, would save those markers as metadata by creating a file with the same name in the same folder, but with extension XMP.

Upon realizing that this hasn't happened, as both the Video and Audio folder only have the mxf files alone, I confirm this by reingesting the panasonic clips and noticing that there is no markers at all.

I noticed another thing: If I copy a video mxf file from the VIDEO folder to a separate folder and ingest that file from there, although with no audio, by creating markers there will be now present a XMP file next to the MXF.

This won't happen if I ingest the MXF file from the original folder. I can add that all the content is NOT locked, and is read and write free, if I click on info for those files.

Also, when I'm about to ingest, as I'm in the CONTENTS folder, I can see all the clips ready to be ingested if I select on the separator above to show Panasonic P2 clips. Both by adding them this way or by choosing to show All Files and then Ingesting the video files from the VIDEO folder, in both ways I get the problem of no XMP files being created upon the creation of markers and transcriptions.

My questions are, is all my work gone or is it lying somewhere else in the disk?

And if it's gone, how am I supposed to create markers without copying all the video files to a separate folder, which will render my clips audioless?

I'm new at this, but am getting help from someone who has set this up and has it working in a previous version of the software(s), so we're both baffled!

I have defined a preset in Media Encoder CC, but when I go into Prelude CC to utilize it, it does not appear in the list of options. However, I am able to see and access the preset in Premiere CC .No amount of deleting/reinstalling/cursing has helped, and I don't see anything in the software that would disable it. I'm running a Windows 7 box.

Any ideas out there? (stupid computers!!!)

How to successfully ingest usable MTS in Prelude?

I'm using Adobe Prelude CC for mac. Try to ingest raw MTS files then there is no audio in the timeline. Then I find "Prelude Help" knowing that "Raw MTS files cannot be logged in Prelude."

So I follow the "When using AVCHD files, ensure that you maintain the folder structure.", trying to ingest the original AVCHD file, but there is still the same issue that even though MTS can be ingested in the Prelude，but without the audio in the timeline, like this:

Then I try to select transcode MTS file into MOV, but then there is another problem shows that:

The Adobe Encorde has been successfully transcode the MTS to MOV, but it couldn't been send back to Prelude.

Then I try to ingest the transcoded MTS manually (which is MOV file now) into Prelude, which is could work.

So I'm so confused in what way that I could use MTS directly in Prelude? Or if my installation of Adobe prelude so how went wrong? But It's totally ok to use MOV in my PL.

Please reply me ASAP, I'm on fire about tons of interview clips to sort out, it's not possible that I have to transcode all the MTS files into MOV, then manually ingest to PL.

I'm trying to utilize Prelude to actually TRANSCODE some R3D material. Since R3D clips are spanned, Prelude can 'reassemble' them. (I don't understand why AME can't do this since Prelude uses AME... but...)

I get this error when trying to start the transcode in Prelude... any help out there?

Hi!

I try to ingest my footage from P2 card and this is what's happening.

If I just use Ingest dialog windows with P2 mode like just clicking the card, it shows only less than half of the footage as you can see in 2 images of below.

Ok. So tryed to solve the problem and got to the "folder mode" and marking all clip parts and ofcourse check "stitch clips together mark" and choose Transcode to h264. After that, Media Encoder tells me multiple errors. It shows error box "One or more errors occured during ingest.Please check the..." And event window tells "Transcode task failed. Reason: AME unknown error!" and "Concatenate task failed. Reason: AME unknown error!". Adobe mediaencoder errorlog tells "

- Encoding Time: 00:00:15

02/06/2014 06:50:36 PM : Encoding Failed

-------------------------------------------------------

Export Error

Error compiling movie.

Unknown error.

So... what can I try next or forget the using Prelude?

Subclips Not in Project Panel and Not Asked to Save Clips

I've created subclips on several clips and they all show when I click on a clip, but it does not ask me to save them, Ctrl-S does nothing and thus I have no subclips in my Project panel. I exported to Premiere to see if they showed up in there, but no luck, just the full clips.

Please advise as to what I'm doing wrong as this is the best tool for me as I'm creating a documentary and have a lot of footage that will not be used in single clips.

I have a project which has been delivered to me on a external USB drive. It contains about 3000 source files and a prelude project with subclips and rough cuts.

After i received the external hard drive, i proceeded to copy its full contents to my work computer. After that, i opened up the prelude project file - and every single file out of the 3000 is offline. Their path still points to the external hdd (file path is "/Volumes/(nameofvolume)/ext..." while it should be F:/(nameofvolume)/ect...).

To me, all i seem to be able to do is relink them by hand, one by one. I'd really love to hear about a workaround or maybe a functionality in prelude that would intelligently fix multiple file locations. Otherwise, well, relinking 3000 files most of which are in deep, deep folder structures... doesnt sound like too much fun.

Is Unassociated Metadata only for markers?

I recently tried using the Unassociated Metadata panel to transfer metadata from proxies to the original clips, and the only thing that's copying is the subclip/marker data. Am I doing something wrong here?

Proxies are MXF (XMP sidecar), and original files are MOV.

Rename files in Prelude?

I don't see a way to rename video files in Prelude. Coming from a still photo background I have always renamed files to a sensible name at the point of import. If this can't be done in Prelude is there a suggestion on how to do this before prelude? Kind of a prelude to using prelude?!? For now I will continue to import and rename both still and vid files in Lightroom but would like to see this in Prelude.

Ingesting Media - naming presets

I am trying to setup a naming preset in Adobe Prelude and I want to have the date formatted as YYYY-MM-DD_Created but there is no option for that. When I go to a preset and try to edit it directly nothing I try gets me to having it appear in prelude in that format. I tried:

%Y-%M-%D_

%Y"-"%M"-"%D"_"

%Y'-'%M'-'%D'_'

%Y---%M---%D___

%Y"---"%M"---"%D"___"

%Y'---'%M'---'%D'___'

All with no luck. Does anybody know how to do this or if it is even possible?
