R200 System update - BC.Next beta updates

On Thursday, October 30, we have pushed live an update on our BC.Next beta version. The update includes a series of liquid improvements (support for include tag, additional global variables, one more module translated to liquid), support for browser caching, ability to disable system scripts and styles for better control over the generated content and a method to consume APIs in front-end by using a new module named module_data.

Authorize.net SSLv3 shutdown, Poodle vulnerability - BC is not affected

Hi all,

We’ve been getting many reports over the last few days regarding the POODLE vulnerability and SSLv3 support. As you may be aware, an Internet-wide security issue, commonly referred to as POODLE, has been identified in the last two weeks - it creates a vulnerability that could allow hackers to gain access to any connection using an outdated Web browser.

Business Catalyst is not vulnerable to the POODLE vulnerability. We have disabled SSLv3 on all our servers as soon as the vulnerability news has been released. As a result of this, customers using older versions of browsers (i.e. IE 6.0) might not be able to access their sites properly.

Furthermore, we’ve been getting questions regarding our Authorize.net integration after they announced they will disable SSLv3 connections (http://community.developer.authorize.net/t5/The-Authorize-Net-Developer-Blog/Important-POO DLE-Information-Updated/ba-p/48163).

We’d like to confirm that our Authorize.net integration won’t be affected by their change.

Hi everyone,

On Tuesday, September 23'rd, we have updated the Business Catalyst service to include a series of security updates and minor bug fixes. Please find below the detailed list of changes:

Require users to confirm identity by re-entering their admin passwords when updating sensitive information like payment gateways, user accounts, user roles or current user details. This has become a standard security practice that reduces risks on admin changes made by unauthorised users. Along with the change, the sensitive information can only be edited over https.
Disabled auto-completion on password and password confirm fields in web forms. While this will prevent auto-completion to work for these fields on most browsers, some browsers do not enforce this standard and will still have this enabled.
We have removed SPF from DNS since it's now deprecated and replaced with TXT fields
Updated Captcha to include additional security measures preventing DOS attacks
Added support for all alpha TLD domains to enable users to create email accounts on domains like .marketing, .photography, etc
Fixed a bug in Product_UpdateInsert API to correctly escape quotation marks in product name
Fixed a typo on Remove admin user success message

Scheduled system maintenance on EU data center - October 26th, 2014

To ensure the highest levels of performance and reliability, we've scheduled a database server upgrade on our EU data center. To minimize the customer impact, the upgrade is scheduled at the most convenient hours and will take up to 6 hours to complete. During the maintenance procedure, creating and updating content, Partner registration, trial site creation, publish from Muse, sFTP, APIs and some site admin sections will not be available. Additionally, all sites on the EU data center will experience a 20 minutes downtime sometimes during the maintenance window. Except for the scheduled 20 minutes downtime, the website front-ends will not be impacted by the maintenance.

Maintenance schedule:

Start date and time: Sunday, October 26th, 9:00 AM UTC (check data center times)
Duration: We are targeting a 6 hours maintenance window

Customer impact:

Partner registration, Trial site creation Muse Publish, APIs, FTP and some admin section will not be available through the entire maintenance window on all data centers
All websites and services on EU data center will experience a 20 minutes downtime sometimes within the maintenance window
Creating or updating content on sites located on EU data center will be unavailable during the maintenance procedure

Announcing the launch of the new webmail platform

On June 26, 2014, we will update the webmail platform to all clients. The current webmail platform will be retired on the same day.

The new webmail platform has a brand new look and feel and it is is packed with new features. To have a closer look at the changes, a preview mode of the new platform is already available to all email users. You just need to select the Preview mode in the webmail login screen.

On April 10th, 2014 we are going to push live a Business Catalyst system update.

While our next release main focus will be on Open Platform and the new Partner Program which aim to transform the product into an extensible platform providing partners all the tolls they need to build a successful web agency franchise, it will also include several updates and bug fixes targeting improvements in the core product. Minor enhancements and cosmetic improvements

When disabling the web app item detail page a web app, the system will now hide the web app item URL, web app item preview, web app detail templates
Fixed some Internet Explorer 10 issues, impacting the WYSIWYG editor and the lists from the admin interface
Email campaigns wizard will now display the time zone to offer a better indication on when the campaign is scheduled to be sent
Page redirect protection will be enabled for all sites; if you plan to redirect users to external sites using PageID parameter, than you should whitelist the URL through the Secure Domain Redirect interface

New InContext editing interface
We're working on a new and improved replacement for our existing InContext Editing feature (ie. "Edit" mode), and are opening it up for public beta testing on your sites.

The new editing experience no longer relies on Flash/Flex and is written purely in HTML5/JavaScript. You can enable the new editing experience under Site Settings > Beta Features.

This release marks the end of an era for the Business Catalyst old admin interface and the transition to our latest version. Additionally, the release includes new SEO functionality that solves the duplicate content for products, paragraph style selection for the new InContext Editing version and several bug fixes and updates all around the system. Known issues and limitations

This release includes the following known limitations:

Updating recovery email address - in an effort to increase security and audit trails on the systems, users are no longer allowed to change passwords or recovery email addresses for other users; a regular admin user can always change his recovery email address by accessing My Details section under the admin user interface; for email users, the recovery email address can be changed by our support team.
Admin interface updated URL and page structure - to increase admin interface performance and loading times, we have updated the page and URL structure of an admin page. The changes include:
- Admin user interface V2 has been removed completely
- Admin URLs now start with /Admin and we've dropped the hash convention from the URL; old admin v3 URLs will be redirected to the new pages to preserve backwards compatibility (ex: /AdminConsole/#!/Admin/AdminPage.aspx will be redirected to /Admin/AdminPage.aspx)
- The iFrame used to display main admin content has been removed
- The custom menu items (config.json) are still loaded using hash URLs
- Open Admin (beta) applications URLs are loaded at /Admin/AppLoader.aspx?client_id={{CLIENTID}}

R190 System Update - Scheduled to go live September 10th, 2013

We are announcing a new Business Catalyst release, scheduled to go live on Tuesday, September 10th.

In this release, we're introducing the ability to set metadata for products, similar to the previous feature we've done for blogs.

To show the Products Meta description, change the HTML for the Individual Product Large Layout to include the corresponding tags in the <head> tag. You can use {tag_productmetatitle} and {tag_productmetadescription} to output the product title and meta description, and they can be used for other meta properties as well.

Here's a code snippet:

To populate the Meta description for your products, you can use the product import - we've updated the export and the import files with a Product Meta Description column, it's the last column in the import template file.

Known issues and limitations

This release includes the following known limitations:

InContext Editing does not allow users to edit Content Holders with dynamic names (ex: {module_contentholder,name="{bc-module} "ice:editable="content"})
- Trying to save such a Content Holder will generate a "Content Holder not found" error message
- The only dynamic names accepted are the ones generated from the {system_visitorDeviceClass} tag (ex: {module_contentholder,name="ch-{system_visitorDeviceClass}"ice:editable="content"})
InContext Editing does not offer support for editing modules inside an editable Content Holder. When editing such Content Holder ICE will overwrite the module tag with the content generated by that module.
InContext Editing mark-up is not recognized inside a Content Holder when the Content Holder is not marked as   editable, any regions defined in the Content Holder will not be editable with ICE.
For example:
-   editable regions defined inside {module_contentholder,name="some content holder name"} are not editable on   ICE
- editable regions defined inside an editable Content Holder {module_contentholder,name="some content   holder name" ice:editable="content"} are editable in ICE.
InContext Editing Toolbar
- The new editor uses the browser native Undo / Redo and Copy / Paste functions instead of having these built in the toolbar
- Clear formatting is now executed when users paste content into the editor; as a result, the clear formatting options are no longer integrated into the new editor toolbar
- Paragraphs and CSS style selectors are no longer available as the styles are inherited from the editable region container
Integration with Dreamweaver CC has been removed as we plan to focus on auto-detecting the regions instead of forcing users to mark-down content

This release includes some great improvements to our module templates, new features for our email marketing system, admin interface improvements, a few infrastructure updates and lots of bug corrections.

Features and enhancements

Modules improvement

Starting with our September release, we have enabled users to use a html page or a static template as a module list template (layout) for all modules that are using templates today. The new addition allows partners to create different views for the same data for a personalize experience. To use this new functionality, just create a new module template and update your module properties by specifying the template to use.

Ex: {module_blogsitepost,2 template="/ModuleTemplates/Custom/MyTemplate.tpl"}

Note: although you can use any extension you feel comfortable with, we recommend using a .tpl extension for two reasons: help locate the template better and avoid having these templates being displayed in Page list.

Email marketing application improvements

This is release is packed with new features and enhancements to our email marketing system.

Dynamic modules in email campaign - you can include modules (a subset of 19 modules) in the Email Campaigns content; the system will render these modules right before the campaign is sent, making sure your customers always receive the latest content;
Fresh, new email templates - the release includes a set of new of new email templates that look much better; along with these new templates, the template selection page was re-done to show better thumbnails;
Improved recipients selection - we have improved the recipients wizard step, replacing the checkbox list with a smart search and select control; additionally, with this release you will be able to select multiple lists (including Customer Reports) to exclude from your campaign.
Improved campaign status screen - before sending the campaign, you will now be able to view the exact number of recipients before sending the campaign (Note: reports and list requiring a long time to compute will be approximated); additionally, while the campaign is sending, we are displaying a meaningful status, that indicates that the campaign is being sent.
Email clients reporting - the campaign report screen has also been improved to include a report showing you the email clients used to read your campaigns.

Admin console improvements

We have updated our new admin user interface and replaced the insert module and insert tag panels with the new Business Catalyst toolbox almost everywhere. With the new toolbox we'll make it easier for partners and business owners to insert and customize module or tags into pages, templates or system emails. The toolbox user interface will opened by default for partners for faster access to tags and modules.

Other changes

Some FTP improvements (better error codes, performance, etc) and SFTP support
DNS improvements (support for setting up Google Apps email out of the box, several bug fixes)
When you change your email address on adobe.com, it syncs automatically with BC
Various improvements of the caching engine for static assets

Issue 2869695 - Fixed an issue that broke the comments submitted by visitors by placing <br> tags after a random number of characters;

Minor enhancements

Programmatically creating thumbnails from full size images now accepts a single dimension (width or height) and it always does proportional resize based on the dimension provided. (docs to be updated soon)
Bounce management updates - with this release, we are going to automatically unsubscribe and opt-out customers whose email addresses have hard bounced. Additionally, we have renamed the Invalid Email Addresses report into Hard Bounces and merged it with the Bounce report.
Import progress indicator - the import has been updated so that it now shows the import progress
Partner Portal updates: invoice list and comissions are now ordered descendent by date; additionally, the Billing tab now shows the Site ID next to each customer name
All charts are now rendered using a different library, leading to slightly different looks. There are no changes in chart data or functionality.

Features and enhancements

Support for SFTP connections

Business Catalyst now supports the SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) protocol when connecting to sites remotely via Dreamweaver or other supported clients.

For information on making the switch and a list of supported clients, please refer to the following article: Connecting to your site using SFTP.

Please note: We will close regular, plain text FTP support by December this year. With this update, new sites setup in Dreamweaver will use SFTP by default.

Improved spam management for comments and forums

Following on from our recent integration of Akismet for tackling Comment spam, we’ve extended this feature to now manage spam for the Forums module. This feature sits seamlessly alongside the manual “mark as spam” feature for Forums, and works the same way as Akismet filtering for Comments does today. For more information on spam filtering for forums, refer to this article: Managing spam on Forums.

For Comments, we’ve also enhanced spam options, allowing you to set the system to automatically delete comments and associated CRM records if filtered by Akismet. Check out the updated article for details on setting this up.

Other changes

Support for Internationalized domain names - we’re opening up support for Internationalized domain names in Business Catalyst, which consist of characters from scripts other than English – such as Chinese, Arabic, or Russian. Adding and modifying IDNs will follow the same process as regular domain names.
Enhancements to the new Module/Tag Toolbox - We’ve completed the rollout of the new Module/Tag Toolbox across the new Admin Console for both Partners and their clients. Based on customer feedback, we’ve also tweaked the way in which the toolbox displays for business owners versus Partner users – by default, the toolbox will now initially be closed for business owners when editing pages, email newsletters etc.
Replaced Tag insert drop-down with the new Toolbox - with this release, we have updated the new admin interface and replaced the tag insert drop-down from inside the editor with our new Toolbox.
Updated Product Detail interface - in the new admin user interface, we have moved the inventory section from product details into it's own tab to make more visible and easier to access. Additionally, we have replaced the "Hide If Out of Stock" and "Can Pre-Order" checkboxes with a drop-down that better describes the options a site owner has when setting-up inventory management.

Beta Features

Product inventory control for attributes

This much anticipated feature enables your clients to manage product inventory and stock levels based on what we now call “variations”. You can enable this on a site-by-site basis from the new Site Settings > Beta Features section of the Admin Console.

The beta rollout will include:

Back-end user interface updates for managing stocks per variations
Updated tag syntax to support product variations
Enhanced e-commerce and customer reports to include product variations; an additional enhancement to reports now allows customers to view the product attributes in the customers and orders reports

What's not included:

Import/Export products to support product variations
API updates to support variations

Email list segmentation

Continuing the improvements on our email marketing system, we are simplifying the process required to send targeted email campaigns by enabling customers to filter customer lists during the email campaign creation. List can be filtered based various information already stored in the system like user actions or CRM data. This new feature is accessible in beta from the new Site Settings > Beta Features section of the Admin Console.

We are announcing a new Business Catalyst release, scheduled to go live next week.

This release includes several fixes that were impacting partners and customers using our eCommerce module, a new module setting allowing partners to display individual random items from a category, some improvements to the new File Manager, Forgot password support for offline payments and a few other bug fixes.

Features and enhancements

Random display items per category

One frequent request we had from partners, was the ability to display random web app items from a specific category. With the next release we're going to include this setting not only for web apps, but for all items that supported random display: web app items, news, blogs, events, FAQs, Forums, Media Downloads. To display a random item from a category, a user should use the cr attribute in the module. See below some samples for each of the updates modules:

Send web form to additional email addresses

With this release, we are enabling webBasics site owners to send the web form notification to multiple email addresses. To enable that, we've added a new web form setting, named "Notification E-mail", that allows users to enter the email addresses where the web form notification should be sent:

Note: This functionality is available for all plans. When a workflow is applied on the form, this setting will list the email addresses included in the first step of the attached workflow.

"Forgot password workflow" for offline payments

Due to PCI-DSS security requirements, we have implemented a compliant workflow for the Offline Payment (OP) password.

Every user who has access to orders made through the offline payment gateway, will be required to set-up a security question and answer that the user will later use for the "Forgot Password" workflow.
In addition to this, we have published a compliant procedure to reset the Offline Payment password, in case a user forgets the security question and answer. It will be publicly available in our Knowledge Base.

Other changes

New File Manager: we've added keyboard shortcuts for some of the most common actions (see tooltips)
New File Manager: added support for multiple file upload; (not supported on Internet Explorer 8/9 and tablets)
Report on opt-in status: we've updated custom reports to allow customers also export the customer opt-n status
Updated events subscribers list to also display the subscriber email address

Deprecated functionality

With this release we are going to remove the reset password functionality from Partner Portal because it raises security implications as it allowed partners to view a user password; to reset an admin user password, partners can login into the site admin console and use the send password recovery email link from the Admin Users interface.
With August release, the Module Manager interface will remove the option to "Use Image for Button [x]" available for some modules (web form submit button, product search form button and more). The current browser support is good enough for enabling more effective ways to style buttons with CSS instead. This also helps with preparing to replace the current Module Manager with the better version available in File Manager.

What's next

Import customers/web apps performance: following the release, we're going to release a update that aims to improve performance of our import engine; this aims to reduce import time and avoid timeouts during import;
Page metadata changes: we plan to update the way page metadata is handled (for more details, see planned changes page)
New admin interface: updated the save and related action buttons behavior to be consistent throughout the entire admin (mockups)
Product Inventory Control per Attributes: we are planning to update the current e-commerce module to enable store owners to manage inventory based on product attributes; this feature is expected to be included in the September release.
New analytics infrastructure - beta: we will release a beta version of a new analytics infrastructure. This aims to solve performance issues when viewing analytics data, and some minor tweaks in visit calculations. A separate post on the paid partner forum with more information on how to access this beta version will be published next week.

We are announcing a new Business Catalyst release, scheduled to go live on Thursday, May 3rd. With this release, we are continuing our investments in system performance and stability by increasing our web servers capacity, enabling HTTP acceleration to provide faster site loading times, and improving the site creation speed by using pre-generated sites.

On the product side, we have completely revamped our partner support workflow taking advantage of the Adobe support infrastructure and tools, enhanced the site templates workflow for partners, and included lots of bug fixes and improvements. Partner support

Updated Help & Support partner experience

Following Adobe ID support, we have upgraded BC support tools (cases, chat, documentation) with standard Adobe tools. As a partner, you can now benefit from the same support tools as the rest of Adobe Creative Suite, and can track your support cases with Adobe BC, Dreamweaver, Muse or Photoshop in a single place.

Partners with more than 100 paid sites will get 2nd level chat support, which includes a higher priority, by default. If you have more than 100 paid sites, but spread across different Partner Portals, please ask support to enable 2nd level chat for you.

Support experience for your Small Business owner clients can now be owned by partners (see below).

Custom Help & Support URL for your clients

As a partner, you are probably already offering various additional services to your clients besides building & maintaining their BC site. Support, tailored specifically to your client needs, is usually one of these value-added services. We are now enabling you to take your Support service to the next level. In Partner Portal Settings, you have the option to set a custom URL for what will open when your client clicks on Help & Support inside Admin Console:

If you have multiple partner accounts, for different verticals, you can specify a Support URL for each of these.

The default Support experience provided by BC for your clients will be updated in a few releases to be similar to the partner support experience. This includes BC-branded support cases and documentation. If you'd like to keep a white-label experience for your customers, please set your own Help & Support URL in Partner Portal.

Infrastructure updates

Between our April release and the following infrastructure updates have been enabled

Limited trial sites for free partners – starting with our May release, the number of trial sites a Free Partner can have will be limited to 100. Once the limit is reached, Free Partners that need to create a new trial site have the options to upgrade to a higher partner plan, upgrade some of the trial sites to paid or delete unused/expired trials.
Automatic trial expiry extension - with this release, trial site expiry date will be automatically extended with 30 days every time an admin user logs in the system through the admin interface or through FTP.
Installed additional hardware - we have installed additional web servers on all our data centers, that translate into an increase of the existing capacity with over 70%.
Updated DNS infrastructure - we have improved the DNS resolution for email delivery so that we can increase the rate at which we're sending the system operational emails
HTTP acceleration – all sites static assets are served from a new cache engine (images, CSS and JavaScript files, together with improved headers that should allow the browser to cache them better for a browsing session). This update has been turned on along with our April release, and has made all the BC sites load faster on first and on subsequent loads.
Accelerated site/partner creation – we've changed the way new sites are created for faster speed, pre-creating them and reusing pre-created sites when needed, and have also improved the creation process for new partners, minimizing the impact of new CCM customers on the existing datacenters.
Adobe ID for partners - in order to support an integrating experience between the various Adobe tools a partner may use (Dreamweaver, Muse, Support forums) we have added Adobe ID support for Business Catalyst partner accounts. Starting April 19, partners are asked to merge their current Business Catalyst account with their Adobe ID accounts. For more details about the transition process and FAQ please read the Introducing Adobe ID blog post.
Updated Terms of Use - Along with several other changes in our processes in the past few months, we also revamped our Terms of Use and the signature process by requesting every admin user to sign a TOU. We have completed the rollout for partners, and we might be pushing an updated partner Terms of Use version within the following weeks. For more details and questions about this change, read the New Terms of Use for Business Catalyst blog post.

Features and enhancements

Site templates

To support the increasing number of partners building, sharing or reusing templates to create new sites, we're extending our site templates support from our partner portal with a new template type and improved management support. The update is going to enable partners to mark sites as templates and choose between making them available in Online Business Builder and keeping them private in their partner portal. A template site will not expire and has the same limits as any other trial site.

Based on your partner level, you can create private or public templates using the Site Details screen or the Tools>My Site Template section from your Partner Portal. Standard partners can only create private templates, while Free Partners can only view site templates that have been transferred to their accounts by other partners.

The number of templates a partner will have will be limited and will vary based on partner level: free partners can store up to 5 templates in their partner portal, standard partners have up to 100 site templates while Premium Partners might have up to 200 templates. Paid sites marked as templates are not counted against these limits.

Business Catalyst Partner fixes

While we are really focused on making the Business Catalyst integration into Creative Cloud a smashing success, we are slowly resuming our efforts to deliver fixes that have been requested by our partners. This release includes the following partner fixes:

Improved product custom fields - we have increased the maximum number of characters for product custom fields to 1024 (previous limit was 256); this gives partners and customers additional space to use when working with products
Improved Secure Zone subscribers list - we have added the customer email address in the Secure Zone Subscribers list to enable partners better filter and manage customers
Better experience when exporting data - to prevent customer confusion when exporting data from Mac computers, we have removed the export to excel option and exporting in CSV format by default.

Social plugins integration updates

Starting with our May release, we are updating the social plugins support to require users to get the plugin code from the third party provider and saving into his Business Catalyst website. The module tags and configuration will remain unchanged, but will render an empty tag until the partner or site owner will update the module template to include the corresponding module code snippet from the third party platform provider.

Other changes

Updated weekly emails - Starting with our May release, the information in the site weekly emails has been filtered based on the site's plan. For example, webBasics site reports will no longer include the sales report.
Localization - we improved and increased the coverage of the admin interface translations into German, French and Japanese
Site Settings -> Ignored IP addresses has been relocated under Reports -> Visitors -> More.
BC-Dreamweaver integration performance improvements
Development Dashboard has been removed, as it didn't provide a clear useful, ongoing benefit. The information present in the development dashboard has been integrated into our new Help & Support section.
Payment gateway settings - for more privacy and data protection, we have updated the Payment Gateway configuration screens to obfuscate the sensitive login information. Fields that have been obfuscated are now requiring confirmation.
Report abuse badge on trial sites - for compliance reasons, a "Report Abuse" link has been added to the front-end of all trial sites of free partners that don't have any paid sites. When they click the Report Abuse link, site visitors are redirected to a form submission page on businesscatalyst.com site.

What's next

The first item on the what's next list might not be news for many of you, but it's definitely one of the most important milestones this year. The Creative Cloud launch is just around the corner, and Business Catalyst is playing an important role in that, as the publishing platform for Adobe® Muse and Dreamweaver. This launch will capture all our attention within the next weeks as we want it to be our best ever.

We'll start our next development cycle on May 15th, while the next Business Catalyst release is going to be pushed live in mid June. That being said, the following items are already on our launch plan for the next release and a few more will join the list. Please expect an update on our 2012 plans around mid May.

HTTP throttling – all page load and API calls to BC will be protected against attacks, this might trigger problems for API heavy sites. We are looking into enabling this update along with our June release, and will help make sure that a reasonable number of requests will be accepted from the same computer per minute.
Automatic site deletion - Starting with the June release, we are going to start automatically delete expired trial sites and canceled sites. Customers will be notified twice before we are going to proceed with deleting the sites.

July release - New admin user interface updates, additional customer reports and bug fixes

We are announcing a new Business Catalyst release, scheduled to go live on Monday, July 2nd.

With this release, we have focused on improving the new user interface and make it ready for prime time, added additional reports and continued updating the new file manager. Additionally, we started to deliver on a series of fixes and product improvements that have been requested by our partners during the last few months.

Infrastructure updates

To ensure the highest security and performance levels for our services, we're applying a software update on all our database servers. For more details about the update, read our Business Catalyst Service Maintenance, June 2012 - Updated blog post.

Features and enhancements

New admin interface is now the default interface for new users

With this release, the new admin user interface will become the default interface for new users and customers, regardless of when the website has been created. To ensure a smooth transition to the new interface, we will continue to allow customers use the interface of their choice and the system will remember their selection the next time they login to admin.

Customers and secure zones report

Secure zones are a great way of creating membership websites which were lacking some basic reporting features that would have enabled customers to view detailed information about their subscribers or send them email campaigns related to their subscription.

With this release, we are enhancing our reporting system by allowing customers to create and save reports of customers and secure zone subscriptions. This report will automate many of the manual tasks a site owner has to do today to extract actionable reports for customers subscribed to secure zones. Additionally, once such a report is created it can be used in the email marketing system to send email campaigns to these customers.

For the next release we are looking into exposing the opt-in status so that customers can view their subscribers communication preferences and act based on this information.

Redirect system domain and URLs to default domain for better SEO performance

Starting with this release, we are allowing users to redirect system domains and URLs to the default site domain or corresponding URL using 301 redirects. This will help customers achieve better SEO performance and avoid duplicate content penalties from search engines. To enable this redirect, users will have to edit the system domain and check the Redirect to default domain check box.

With the July release, we are going to enable the same functionality for secure URL as well, with the exception of payment pages and POST requests, which will remain on the secure domain.

Note: when admin user is logged in admin using the system domain, the system will not redirect front-end pages while session is still active; user must log out of admin for the redirect to work.

User interface consistency for renamed modules

The new admin user interface has been updated to consistently use new names for these modules:

Media downloads (former Literature)
News (former Announcements)
Events (former Bookings)

There are still two areas where the old naming is being used:

Module & tag names (e.g. { module_announcement }, { tag_announcementurl_value })
FTP folder names (e.g. /Layouts/Announcement)

These will take a significant engineering effort to update, as we need to support existing sites that could be already checked out to local file systems, or replicating existing sites. Together with some of the partners that are using this features intensively, we decided to leave these areas with the old naming for now, and redirect the engineering effort in two larger projects currently under way: handling partner enhancement requests and a better web apps engine.

Offline payment security improvements

The security of the current offline payment workflow has been improved in order to meet international security standards for offline payments:

A new, additional “Offline payment password” must be set, and updated every 90 days
Pass phrases are now unique to each order. You can no longer use the one pass phrase to access every secure PDF

This will help transactions be more secure and protect business owners from potential attacks. Here's a more detailed view of this feature.

Delete paid and Creative Cloud sites from the Admin Console

We moved the "Delete Site" functionality to the Admin Console of the website in order to help Creative Cloud users and beginners cancel an existing paid website that they don't need anymore. Here's a snapshot of this new feature.

Other changes

Invite Partner user: starting with the release, partners can add other partners as site admins through the Site Details screen in the Partner Portal. This functionality has been moved from the User Management interface and it is enabling partners to collaborate on developing a site without impacting the site admin limit
File Manager alpha: drag'n'drop can be used to move one file at a time between different folders
File Manager alpha: expired sessions will prompt you to re-enter your password and resume your work on already opened files
Billing Settings admin menu is hidden for all users of trial or Creative Cloud redeemed sites
MetaWeblogAPI switch to https - Starting with this release, we will push a security update for the MetaWeblogAPI of Business Catalyst to disallow use of an unsecured connection (http) as that sends login credentials in plain text.
Updated time zone for CRM entities: we have updated several CRM screens so that they display entities based on site's time zone instead of the Asia Pacific datacenter time. The following lists have been updated: Customers, Orders, Cases, Event Bookings, Opportunities and Modules>Comments
Updated free trial sign-up: Free trial sign up with an existing Business Catalyst or Adobe ID user now creates an additional trial site and places it under the user's partner portal

Deprecated functionality

CRM User Passwords will no longer be exposed through API and custom reports - with this release we are completing our security policy update for CRM passwords and will stop delivering CRM user passwords through API and Custom Reports. For more details about the security update, read our Important Security Policy Updates for CRM Users - Effective February 8th announcement
Blog trackbacks, not present in new user interface, have been removed from the new sites templates as well. While existing trackbacks will continue to work, we recommend to remove them from your sites due to spam issues, and use instead social modules for significantly more effective content sharing
Triangle Dreamweaver extension for versions CS3 and CS4 will stop functioning after July 30th. Please use these newer alternatives.
Separate menu visibility setting has been dropped from the new admin user interface and replaced with a more granular permission system that also control the menu visibility. More details about the new permissions system on our February release notes blog post

We are announcing a new Business Catalyst release, scheduled to go live on Wednesday, April 18th. Following the challenges we faced with R174, we've taken a much closer look at our quality processes and we're doubling down on testing to reduce any potential bugs this release - this leads to less features, but we know after consulting many partners that quality and stability are what's most important.

This release introduces a series of updates that are going to be gradually rolled out in April, whose goal is to take the Business Catalyst infrastructure and platform to the next level in terms of performance and reliability. Infrastructure updates

CDN – the Content Delivery Network improves initial page load for AdminConsole, by serving files from very fast servers that are close to the computer loading the Admin Console. The CDN support has been turned on April 7 for sites delivered from our European data center and on April 9 for sites delivered from our APAC and North America data centers.

Features and enhancements

New dashboard for webBasics and webBasics+ plans

With this release, we are going to replace the business dashboard for webBasics and webBasics+ sites with a new simplified version that gets rid of all the unused graphs and information that cluttered the interface, while being built on the new API based UI framework. To streamline the site publishing workflow, the new dashboard exposes features likes site upgrade, invite new users and add domains.

The redesigned dashboard will be available only from the new Business Catalyst admin user interface (V3).

Prior to this release, BC system folders such as /Layouts had the same contents on all plans, even though Shop layouts weren't used on webMarketing plan for example. In order to reduce unnecessary traffic and remove noise, system folders are now accessible over FTP only if the feature is available in current site plan.

Send Secure Zone Login Details email switch

In this release, we've added a new parameter called SWE that decides whether or not the Secure Zone Login Details email will be sent when the form is submitted. By default, this new parameter is not included in the query string and its set to "True" (email will be sent). Partners that want to stop this email from being sent should add "&SWE=False" in the query string when creating a secure zone registration form.

The already existing parameter named "SAR", that decides whether the WebForm Submission Confirmation AND Secure Zone Login Details emails are sent remains unchanged. For the Secure Zone Login Details email specifically, if any of these parameters is set to "False", the email will not be sent.

Issues fixed in the April release

Web forms: submitted form confirmation page is now available for webBasics and webBasics+ plans in System Pages
Web forms: web form builder username and password fields are now hidden for webBasics and webBasics+
System Pages - "Page content empty" and "No start pages" custom error pages have been removed. Existing customization, if any, will continue to work. These pages are never shown for production sites, as these have proper start pages set.

New support/chat/forums in place – with this release, we have updated the Business Catalyst partner support workflows and tools. This change aims to improve the way we support our partners by offering a better support workflow, new forums and chat based on the Adobe support infrastructure. In addition, following the release, partners will be able choose between letting business owners access the Business Catalyst documentation or access a custom documentation. Our March release includes:

A brand new file manager for a better file management and code editing experience
Updated user and email account management interface and workflows
A range of other tweaks and enhancements

New File Manager (Alpha, partners only)

We're proud to introduce the first public release of our new File Manager. Designed with productivity and ease of use in mind, the File Manager is an entirely new concept. When complete, it will be a full replacement for the current Pages, Templates, Module Templates, System Pages and old File Manager interfaces. The new File Manager is based on our rich client side, API based UI framework - we know you'll be impressed by how it performs

In this Alpha release, the following features are available:

Browsing files (including /_System folder, pages and templates)
Editing multiple files
Code editor with syntax highlighting, and code completion (including BC modules and tags)
Saving as draft and publishing Pages and Templates
Business Catalyst Toolbox, including module, tag and code snippets insertion

Some of the known issues which will be addressed in upcoming releases include:

IE8 browser compatibility
Folders containing special characters such as # and & cannot be accessed from tree list
File editor upper bar does not properly handle page info display/navigation on multiple rows

The File Manager is available only to Partners for now. Before introducing it to your business owner clients, we need to address permissions, design view editing and more.

SEO options enabled out-of-the-box

The Site Settings -> SEO menu entry in Admin Console has been removed. The available options were:

SEO friendly URLs for eCommerce, Announcements, Web Apps -- these will be enabled for all sites
Enable partial URL matching for SEO friendly URLs -- this will remain as is for all sites, and will no longer be possible to enable it for new sites, which will have it turned off
Enable sitemap.xml for search engines -- this will remain as is for existing sites, and always enabled for new sites

Note that trial sites will not be indexed by search engines. Should you want to disable search engine indexing after upgrade, please use a custom robots.txt file or upload an empty sitemap.xml.

If you'd like to use a custom sitemap.xml file, simply upload it to your site. If this file exists, it will be served instead of the BC-generated sitemap.xml.

Should you still need to access the SEO settings, they will still be available for a short period at yoursite.com/AdminConsole/#!/Utilities/SEO.aspx

Updated user and email accounts user interfaces

To simplify the user and email accounts management workflows and increase Admin interface performance, we're updating their corresponding user interfaces beginning March 20th.

While email and user accounts will continue to share data to facilitate email and admin access for the same email address, the management of emails and user accounts will be separated. In addition, for better security, the user and email accounts will be created using an invitation workflow, which means that the user creating the account will not be able to set a password for the account they are creating.

The old user interface will preserve its functionality which allows admins to manage users and email accounts.

In addition, by separating the email and user account management, we are dropping the option of having a user that doesn't have admin and email access. While these accounts will continue to live on the system, they will have no interface to manage them. To manage these, you will need use the old user interface to enable email or admin access for each of these user accounts.

Note: The new interfaces for user and email accounts management will be made localization-ready using the Adobe Content Translation Tool starting with the next release. For non-English customers we recommend the use of the old user interface.

Other updates

Deleted sites will be permanently removed from the system 30 days after the site has been deleted via the Partner Portal or Site Admin Console.

What's next

New user interface V3 default for new users - pushed to April release

We've pushed the change of the default user interface for new users into the April release, so that we are able to better integrate some of the new features we're working on, such as the new File Manager and User and Email account management interfaces.

Updated domain management

Continuing the journey started with User and Email account management, we're going to update the domain management user interfaces to be more intuitive and faster to use without losing the functionality available today.

We are announcing a new Business Catalyst release, scheduled to go live on Tuesday, February 28th.

The R173 release comes with an updated DNS infrastructure (hardware and software) for better performance and reliability, updated web form interface for improved usability and several bug fixes.

Updated DNS Infrastructure

With this release we are going to replace the existing DNS infrastructure with a completely new solution (hardware and software) that aims to fix many of the DNS problems you've found while using Business Catalyst, greatly increase performance when resolving domains and support higher loads for new site creation.

For a smoother migration path, the new solution will be switched on a day after the release, on March 1st.

Updated Web Forms

We have updated the Edit Web Form user interface to simplify the discovery and usability for web form settings. Starting with R174, we've added a more visible Edit Properties button and updated the Web Form Properties dialog:

Related to web forms, the Reports > Web Form Usage menu entry in Admin Console will be shown only if the user has View Reports permission and at least a form is created on the site.

Heads-up: upcoming changes in the next release

We'd like to give you a heads-up with upcoming changes in the following release, without setting anything in stone though.

User Interface V3 will become default for new users

Starting with our next release (March 2012), all new users will have access by default to the Business Catalyst V3 user interface, but will be able to switch to the current user interface. The change will affect all user types (Partners and Customers) and all sites (existing and new).

New names and module tags for Announcements, Literature and Bookings

To improve consistency across the new Admin, the Announcements, Literature and Bookings modules, their corresponding tags and user interfaces will be renamed. Existing tags and modules will continue to work as today, but users will no longer be able to insert them through module manager going forward. For each modules, the following name changes will occur:

Announcements will become News and the following tags and modules will be replaced:
- {module_announcement} will become {module_news}
- {tag_announcementurl_value} will be replaced by {tag_newsurl_value}
- {tag_announcementid} will be replaced by {tag_newsid}
- {tag_eventfromdate} will become {tag_newsfromdate}
- {tag_eventtodate} will become {tag_newstodate}
Bookings will become Events and the following tags and modules will be replaced:
- {module_booking} will become {module_events}
- {tag_bookingday} will become {tag_eventday}
- {tag_bookingmonth} will become {tag_eventmonth}
- {tag_bookingyear} will become {tag_eventyear}
Literature will become Media Downloads and the following module will be replaced:
- {module_literature} will become {module_mediadownloads}

Updated user management interfaces

To simplify the user and email accounts management workflows, we're going to update their corresponding user interfaces in the next releases. Going forward, we will separate the admin user accounts from email accounts management and start using an invitation workflow for user and email accounts creation.

Besides the change of workflow itself, this update completely changes the way we are thinking about the platform and represents the first step into the Business Catalyst future. The user and email accounts user interfaces rely on REST APIs and backbone.js to completely separate the UI from the application login and provide more development flexibility and increased performance. Going forward, every interface we'll touch will be built on this infrastructure and will allow us to publish APIs which partners can use to extend or tweak the platform.

Note: by separating email and admin accounts user interfaces, you will no longer be able to create users that don't have access to admin and email. Existing user accounts that don’t have email and admin access will continue to live on the system, but they will not be visible or editable in the new interfaces. We recommend you to use the current user interface to transition these accounts into either email or admin accounts.

Starting March 20th, we will discontinue support for Internet Explorer 7 or lower and Firefox 4 or below. In order to continue using Business Catalyst Admin user interface without problems, you and your clients need to upgrade to a more recent browser:
