The SP2010 site connects as expected through Internet Explorer, so the user credentials are probably correct.

Well, that's news to me: the path name for book upload to Documentum is case-sensitive.

So "_insets" and "_Insets" are created in separate folders in Documentum.

Makes sense with FM's UNIX legacy, but it's been so long for me....

Is this case-sensitivity a configurable option?

In my case, turning it off would be faster than a MIF editing cycle.

Got a trailhead for these symptoms?

I attempted the initial upload of a book plus inset files from FM11 to a Sharepoint server. After connecting to the server through the CMS interface, I right-clicked, selected

That part looked good. The progress bar appeared and was active.

An error log window appears after a few hours with a message like this: The following files could not be uploaded due to some error.

Edit 20141021: The error log is not completely accurate. It claims, for example, that 191 files in an _images folder did not upload. But the SP open-in-Explorer view shows that 138 of those, approximately 72%, did upload. Ugh.

In that error log:

Some (not all) of the paths to files contain spaces. Are spaces not allowed?
Other paths contain the underscore character. For example: D:\ABC\Development\ABC_App_UserGuide\_Images\Dashboard.swf. Are underscores a problem?

Edit 20141021: From within the FM CMS interface, the Show Dependents list does not sort correctly, whether ascending or descending.

My prior CMS experience is with FM to Documentum. Perhaps I need more basic information about what Sharepoint does and does not support?

"Configuration system failed to initialize" when trying to connect FM12 to Sharepoint

Adding a connection to Sharepoint using the FM12 CMS Connection Manager is failing with the error "Configuration system failed to initialize". I can access all the sites and libraries in Sharepoint perfectly from IE on the same PC, but no matter what I try in the FM12 Connection Manager I get the above mentioned error. The PC (which is actually a VM) is running Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64 with heaps of RAM and HDD free) with all updates applied. FM12 is installed as part of Technical Comms Suite 5 subscription.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this (or what it even means) and how I can fix it?

SharePoint and FrameMaker 10 Check in

I am using FrameMaker and the CMS feature to check documents out of our SharePoint repository at work. I can check documents out and edit them after I have logged into the repository manager. I edit my document but then when I right click on the document in the repository manager to check it back in, the "check in" option is grayed out or not selectable. Does anybody know what I have to do to correct this? I have the correct permissions to the SharePoint directory since I am the one who created the directory in the first place.

Upgraded ro Frame 11 recently and now I cannot add a new document to Documentum. I get the following error.

I still have Frame 10 installed and can check in the document with it, but Frame 11 does not recognize it as a FrameMaker file.

I have a requirement of adding a richtext in a custom multifield.

There is a richtext component created under '/apps/website/components/richtext/items/items/richtext'

This richtext would have 3 plugins as well.

Now my custom multifield xtype should have the below

1) Text Field

2) Pathfield

3) Richtext(with the additional plugins. Same as /apps/website/components/richtext/items/items/richtext).

Updating a Documentum virtual document with insets and graphics

(FM11 with the EMC Documentum connector.)

I understand that the EMC Documentum connector to FM11 creates the "virtual document" resource in Documentum from a FM book and its dependent files. The creation of the virtual document happens when the book is first uploaded from FM11 through the CMS interface to Documentum.

That works for me.

How do I add referenced graphics to, or remove referenced graphics from, a chapter of the book so that the virtual document resource is automatically updated during check-in, check-out, or when I click on a control (that I don't see in the interface) ?

Will a workflow cause the EMC Documentum interface do that?

Or do I need to perform all additions to and deletions from the virtual document through, as an example, the Webtop interface?

Backstory

From work of a colleague last year, I inherited a book with referenced graphics.

The book and all of its chapter files reside in Documentum. A Documentum "virtual document" resources enables me to check out the book so that it and all dependent files become available.

The structure in the Documentum tree, and on the workstation Documentum cache, is similar to this:

_Book at top level

_Graphics folder at top level

_Chapter_1

_Chapter_2

I have successfully:

Created a graphic file and stored it in _Graphics on my workstation desktop (not the cache)
Uploaded the graphic to the _Graphics folder in Documentum through the Repository Manager.
In a _Chapter_# file, added the graphic to the chapter by reference. Using the Repository Mananger, I selected the graphic file from Step 2. The "progress bar" in FM indicated that FM was downloading the graphic file to the cache.
Saved the chapter file.
Checked in the book through Repository Manager. All of the chapter files and graphics checked in as expected.
Checked out the book through Repository Manager.
Opened the _Chapter_# file from step 3.
FM asks me to identify the location of the new graphic file.
I check the Repository Manager. The new graphic file is not checked out, no apparently it is not part of the book virtual document resource.

How can I best manage Image Files in FrameMaker using TFS?

I am using FrameMaker 11 with Team Foundation Server 2010 and have a question about managing graphics.

We have several people working on the same book file (all in different locations).

Everything works very well except we kept running into issues with the graphic files.

We used to import all the graphics by reference, but it became difficult to manage the graphics outside of the frame files using TFS.

We have since copied the graphics into the Frame files which makes the file sizes very large.

I am wondering if anyone has experience with this and knows of a better way to manage the graphics.

Any info would be much appreciated.

I just trying to use webdav in one of my cq5.4 instance..

Here what iam finding is when i upload an image from cq5.4 digital assets itz showing up correct in my webdav folder with generating the rendations for that particular image...

And when use webdav folder to upload image it is showing u[p in the cq dam but rendetions are not getting created..

Is there any solution for this..And images names which are showing with some 1.0 , 1.2 like names in webdav folder...

Can i get help on this...

What is the right CMS for FrameMaker 11 and DITA?

I am looking for a good CMS for FrameMaker 11. I already tried componize for Alfresco, but it does not solve our problems. Some important requirements are:

- comfortable editor which can be easily used by authors without XML/DITA/FrameMaker-knowledge

- creating DITA-imagemaps (CMS editor)

- creating DITA-templates without special knowledge or using FrameMaker-templates without problems

In componize it was possible to download DITA-maps and open them in FrameMaker. But I don`t know how to format a whole DITA-map in FrameMaker - is it possible? Because it wouldn´t be very comfortable to format every single topic by using an EDD..

Another idea was to import the whole DITA-map to RoboHelp for formatting, but it didn`t work because of a missing DITA Open Toolkit-Folder? I did download DITA Open Toolkit, but I was not able to install it. Why do I need this for RoboHelp and not for FrameMaker?

And for the templates: is there an easy way to create FrameMaker-DITA-templates? I read a lot about EDDs, R/W-rules and DTDs but it seems to be very complicated for non-experts to create all these different documents. And there are less help documents like demonstration videos to learn it on my own.

For me it seems to be like "before you are able to work with RoboHelp-FrameMaker-Templates-Outputs-CMS, learn a lot of programming languages and become an IT-specialist." - so very complicated, not comfortable, not intuitively.

A lot of questions, maybe some of you have some good ideas and solutions! Thanks

With so many development teams adopting the Agile process, documenting these features that are being worked on in parallel (often by multiple teams, even though the writer is tasked with incorporating all their work!), I need a way to work on separate branches of docuemntation of the same book (and sometimes the same chapter file in a book) so I can also work in parallel, but incorporate, generate and release changes sequentially.

Am I the only writer with this problem or am I just not using the right search terms?

Does Sharepoint maintain links between documents if they are moved?

I'm beginning to wonder how broken the Frame/Documentum integration is in Frame 11.

I created a book in Frame 10. Since then, I've upgraded to Frame 11 and added files to the book using Frame 11. Of course, I had to use Frame 10 to add the files to Documentum, but that's a different story. Now, when another user at my company checks out the book, the files I added in Frame 11 are pointing at my AppData\Adobe\Frame\Documentum... folder.

"Checkout all dependent files" not completed correctly for book

We're using the FM SharePoint Connector with unstructured documents.

When we check out a book and select "Checkout all dependent files" (for example, to rebuild the book), all the dependencies are checked out in SharePoint, including all the chapters and all the graphics files used in the chapters. The book and chapters are also copied to the local folder where Framemaker stores the working files (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\SharePoint and so on -- I call this the "Adobe Secret Sandbox.") But the graphics files called by the chapters are not copied to the working folder.

As a result, when we try to open a chapter or process the book, we get the familiar "can't find the grapihcs" dialog asking for a new path, and the path we need to supply doesn't have the files.

We tried right-clickng the book in the Connector and using "Download dependents" to remedy this, but it didn't work. We have to do this manually for each chapter. (Another alternative might be to copy the graphics folders and files directly into the Adobe Secret Sandbox, but we haven't tried this.)

Checkout not cancelled for dependencies

(Using the SharePoint connector) I've observed that if I check out a file and also check out its dependencies automatically, and then cancel the checkout on the original file, the dependencies are all left checked out. Their checkouts must each be cancelled manually. Since there can be dozens or even hundreds of dependencies, this makes for a lot of work. It would be better if their checkouts were cancelled automatically along with the parent checkout.

Slow SharePoint query file dependency

I have set up Framemaker 10 with SharePoint 2010. I can make a CMS connection without problem and have uploaded a number of books.

I can check in/out individual fm books and files without a huge delay (although performance is not good).

When I attempt to check out a book and all of its dependencies there is a show stopping delay.

Additionally when i right click on a book in the Repository Manager and select Show Dependencies there is an equally long wait to show a list that only contains 24 entries (commonly 5 fm files and the rest are graphics imported by reference).

My guess is that the SQL query on the FMDependency column in the library is causing some kind of bottle neck. I can't be sure.

As the FMDependency column is a multi line entry I can't index this in the library so I cant get any performance improvement that way from SharePoint.

Has anyone else had a similar experience. Are there any tips that can be given when setting up the library in SharePoint for best performance?

I've been trying to test this combination, but after hours of trying I admit defeat. I can't get it to work. Nor can I find a good documentation or posts which help.

When I enter details in the connection manager and hit enter, nothing happens except the password field becomes empty. There are no errors messages or anything.

Do I need to configure something in sharepoint?

What exactly do I putin all the required fileds?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Save after checkin -- warning missing for .dita files?

I've been preparing guidelines for our writers to work with the FM SharePoint Connector. I've cautioned them to save before checking in.

Still, it is possible to check in, continue editing, and then try to save. While exploring the recovery procedures for this, I noticed that unstructured .fm files and .dita files behave differently. With an .fm file, I got a (not quite accurate) warning that "the file has changed on the disk since you last opened or saved it." But with a .dita file, I got no warning at all.

Has anyone else noticed this? It looks like it might be a bug.

Hi,

we are using FM10 with Sharepoint 2010.

It works fine, generally speaking, but we are running into an issue with the field FMDependency.

The field is created automatically when a FM10 file is uploaded. However it is too short for the kind of dependencies we have and it issues an error when we modify other metadata in Sharepoint and save the item.

is it possibile to change the length of this field ? Where and how ?

SharePoint and FrameMaker 10 CMS/Integration - Checked Out Files Stuck

Hello,

I originally set up the CMS connection to my SharePoint through FrameMaker using the domain name as a part of the user name (as suggested in a previous post), but have still run into this same issue discussed in that post, (unalterably locked files), and have been completely unable to resolve it.

When I check out a file, it gets "stuck" in that checked-out/locked state, and I'm unable to edit, check in, or discard my check out. The only thing I'm still able to do is view the files as "Open (Read only)," and delete the files.

I've even tried to access the files through the SharePoint site itself (as well as through SharePoint Workspace) in an attempt to check the files back in, but this command only returns an error about the files being checked out to a local draft, or one claiming the file may not even be checked out in the first place, etc. The only thing I seem to be able to do is delete the files from the server.

Thus far, I've been completely unable to use this tool.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm at a loss.

We're using FM10, DITA-FMX, and SharePoint 2010, and working with DITA topics.

We've created a "Topic Type" column in SharePoint, which we populate with the topic type (concept, task, reference) when we check in a DITA document.

In FM10's CMS Connector, Advanced Search, this column is not available for searches. IN FM11, it looks like it might be (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS92ce23f8a8bab2f3-289f19b113749faafac-8000.h tml), but I'm not completely sure.

If we upgrade to FM11, will we be able to search on Topic Type and other custom fields from within the CMS Connector Advanced Search?

I have noticed some strange behavior when using FrameMaker 9 to check out files via webdav and the browse URL method. I noticed that the folder that contains the checked out file using FrameMaker 9 no longer shows files in the Alfresco Share web portal.

Once I check the file back in using FrameMaker 9, I can refresh the Alfresco Share browser window and all the files in the directory will display again.

I am not sure if this is a FrameMaker issue or a Alfresco issue, however, I feel that the Share portal should still function properly even if a file is checked out via WebDav and should just display the file as being locked for editing or checked out, etc.

Would love to know if others have experienced this and if there are any resolutions.

Content management with FrameMaker

The company I work for has had a customized EDD built for structured FrameMaker. A template was developed from the EDD and the authors make technical manuals with this template. Our manuals are printed in pdf and on hard copy. We do not have any current plans to publish on the web. We are currently using FrameMaker 7.2 and will soon go to version 8.0.....anyway, the "powers that be" are looking into a Content Management system for us. A portion of our company is using XMetal with the content management system. Is it possible, with the use of DITA, to continue to use FrameMaker with content management, in conjunction with an XMetal system? We DO NOT want to lose the WYSIWYG capability. On the other hand, are there any suggestions of how to build a type of data/content management system with elements in Structured FrameMaker? As I said earlier, we publish our manuals pdf or hard copy, so keep that in mind. Thanks, Vera

My company needs to run FrameMaker 8 via a Webdav service. Is a CMS required? If so, is there an open source CMS that works well with Frame?

FM 8 and getting Workgroups to import text blocks from server?

Via the FM 8 Workgroups feature, I am trying to implement importing text blocks on a server (by reference), with auto-update so if the text block on the server changes the Workgroups-linked text block in my local file updates when I open the local file.

Although I followed the Workgroups setup instructions in FM 8 Help, I get a Network Failure. Unable to access server message when I select the file to import and select Import by reference. (I did try the Import/Copy and Open options but got the same error message.) The Workgroups Import dialog box does access the server, as the .fm files on that server are available for selection. Also, the files on the server have the appropriate permission/access privileges set.

Any suggestions?

Looks like this integration was supported by IBM earlier with version 5, but it is not supported anymore.

But we are planning to do the integration ourself..Can somebody help on how we can create our own plugin in framemaker to make this integration ?

FrameMaker 9.0p237 and Sharepoint: first question

question 1: Browse URL

After consulting the Helps, I've tried Browse URL with:

just a folder-path on the server, http://[server]/300/300097/Working
a path and filename on the server, http://[server]/300/300097/Working/Working/Forms/smu_appxCertificates.fm

In both cases, I'm prompted for authentication. With my standard everyday password for our Sharepoint system, I've tried [userID], [domain/userID] and [domain\userID] to no avail: always the same bland reply "Invalid username/password".

Anyone out there managing to log in to a Sharepoint server through the FrameMaker "Browse URL" mechanism? any obvious sign of something I'm doing wrong or failing to understand?

I was about to start describing question 2, then thought of something else I'd better test before posting; "egg on face" is one thing, wasting your time and input another!

Can FM integrate with SharePoint?

We use Visual SourceSafe or Team Foundation Server for 99% of our source FM docs. But we wanted to keep a few FM templates on our SharePoint site so our writers in various cities could easily access them. We each have full permissions so I don't think that's the issue.

Here's the problem scenario, infinitely reproducible:

Check out .fm template file, which resides in a Topic section of the SP page called "Templates".
Click filename link to open template file in FM.
Edit file, save it, close it, check it back in.
File automatically MOVES from "Templates" Topic to "General" Topic, accompanied by a new .backup file, which is still in checked-out status.
Check out .fm file again and edit properties to change Topic from default "General" to "Templates", after which it moves back to the correct Topic.
As .backup file is still checked out, delete it from "General" Topic.

This behaviour seems to occur only with .fm files. A few of our offices still use Word and their files seem to behave correctly. The SP administrator said maybe it's a simple matter that FM and SP "don't play well together" but I find it hard to believe MS would permit this kind of weakness, considering the huge FM audience out there.

Has anyone experienced the above scenario or learned any workarounds?

I'm trying to find the answer to a question that a user asked me:

We have framemaker, and I'm able to use framemaker with a webdav share that I've setup on a testing internal webserver. They want to know if they can use Framemaker with Webdav to conencto to a sharepoint server/site. I can't find anything in help, documentation, or by searching the web concerning this. So my question is, can Framemaker work with MS Sharepoint sites, has anyone had any luck with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using a SharePoint CMS connection for DITA

I'm experimenting with a CMS connection to SharePoint in FrameMaker 10, for DITA work, and I have several questions.

1. When I create a new DITA topic, I don't have an option to "Browse CMS" and save the file there. This option is present when I create a regular FM document. Am I missing something in the FM-DITA setup?

2. How do you check in a file with a comment, save the changes, and spawn a new version all at once? Everything I've tried either loses the changes, fails to add a comment, or reverts the version to 1.0. Can someone provide step-by step instructions?

3. Is there any way I can search in FrameMaker for custom SharePoint metadata ("columns") created in the Document Library -- columns such as "Audience" or "Product"? The Advanced Search options don't show these columns.

Framemaker10 - CMS-integration questions

Hi, I am setting up Frammaker10 integration with sharepoint 2010. There is now one more open question I have to solve (and probably not the last). When checking out documents for editing in FM10 all the files with dependencies are copied to a local folder (Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\SharePoint). That's very useful and nice but what happens with graphic files? They seem to be not observed in this process.

Now my question:

Is there a possible way to check out dependent graphics as well

Is there any workaround to solve the problem

SharePoint 2010 and editing FrameMaker 8 Book Documents

I have just began running SharePoint 2010 and am wanting to utilize it's document management/revisioning system with my current large library of FrameMaker documents (multi-files in books). Need the ability to check-out entire Frame book files for revisioning and review with all links intact.

Can I get feedback on how to accomplish this? Adobe's advice is "upgrade to Frame 10"... I believe there must be another solution (I'm running Frame 8 and am not expecting a company-wide Frame 10 deployment within the next 8 to 12 months).

BTW.... I have posted a similar question on MS website with no response as of 19 hours.
