Batch Rename with additional "."s, drops the file extension. Request for "Keep File Extension" option...

I NEVER name files with extra "." s in the name. I realize that all OS's (even Windows) will recognize it, but I haven't gotten out the old mindset of 8.3 filenaming... Although I do use longer names. So... I was surprised to see that when I was renaming files as per a clients naming preference to add a period within the name, the file extension is removed.

For example:

original file - 2014_10_31_1643.CR2 when batch renaming to "2014.31" + sequence, drops the "CR2" extension.

but.... if I change it to "2014_31" + sequence, the ".CR2" remains

Since adding multiple "." is a legitimate naming convention, shouldn't the file extension remain? Or, possibly this could be made more flexible by adding a check box "Keep file extension"

Not sure if this is simply a font or fontagent plugin issue, I haven't investigated everything yet... I need to finish up a project, although it is crashing consistently so I may need to work on this problem first. I am seeing a new CC2014 leak notice in the system log and PS has been crashing today. Related? Below is the line from the log followed by the crashed thread. Let me know if you need more of the report to be posted.

auto profile noise reduction?

Seems like all the other raw processors, and noise filters (neatimage, ninja etc) have the ability to auto profile noise reduction or use camera profiles for noise reduction. Not just applying a preset to a single image but being able to batch a bunch of raw images and apply noise reduction based on different image data, iso etc. We can apply auto to most other aspects of the conversion but noise reduction isn't one of them.

I don't need this for critical work stuff which tends to be processed in sets of images with similar shooting environment. But now that all my P&S cameras shoot raw this would be helpful to batch process directly out of ACR. This week I found myself hunting around for other raw converters just to do this and I was pleasantly surprised to see many to choose from that offer this feature.

It does occur to me that I may be overlooking this and ACR already does this? or is it a missing feature?

Is anyone running a Mac Pro 5,1 - 10.8.5 with a Radeon 7950 or 5870 and "Use OpenCl" is not greyed out in the performance prefs? There are many forum posts about OpenCL not working with PS CC and these cards. It's possible that the driver for 10.8.5 is bad, but when I test OpenCl with all of the following apps: galaxies.app, Luxmark, and Oceanwave it shows that OpenCL is enabled and working without any problems. Both the 7950 and the 5870 card only has a problem with Photoshop CC ( it works in CS6 )

I know that the routine answer is that there must be a bug in the driver.... but...do we know that there is a bug in the driver, or is it possible that there is a problem with PS CC ( it works with CS6, same hardware and OS) ? So are we sure this isn't a PS problem?

The following discussion that I posted showed that it was working with CS6 but not with CC? And that sniffer seems to be OK with it (I think?)

Both cards that I have tested are Mac versions not flashed PC cards. I have a Mac Pro 5,1 3.33 GHz 6-Core w/ 48GB memory running 10.8.5

The specs from Adobe show that this card should work with CC: Photoshop CC and CC 2014 GPU FAQ

But the PS CC Prefs show that OpenCL is not active. Also, when I enable the "Use Graphic Processor" option within the performance tab this Mac Pro with the 7950 (I haven't tested the 5870 long enough) will eventually crash (full crash - black screen and reboot). Unfortunately I don't have a crash report to post because I just cleaned everything but the crash report points to the Radeon driver which is the latest default driver install with 10.8.5 (there's no option with a Mac to install these drivers separately)

I realize that the above crash points to the driver. But is it possible that PS can crash the system if it doesn't address the driver correctly. I really don't know if that's possible that's why I am asking, but I didn't have the problem or crash, or inability to run OpenCL in CS6... just in CC and CC2014

OpenCL is disabled in CC2014 but active in both CC PS and CS6 PS. I also ran the OceanWave benchmark and it appears to be within spec. I think that all drivers are in OS and none available to install independently. Any ideas?

Use OpenCL is greyed for Normal, Basic and Advanced options in CC2014

I will miss configurator panels in 2014, but if there was a better way to organize subsets of actions in separate panes that would help.

Currently all of my actions are organized in folders within the Actions pane. But even with the actions placed in folders, the pane becomes less easy to navigate the bigger it gets. And, there are typically just a handful that are actively used. It would be very helpful if I could create separate panes of a smaller subset of actions that are in "button mode". I could expand a pane with specific project actions that I am working on, or layer actions etc.

Many of the things that were placed in Configurator panels were actions, or menu commands because the pane could be better organized and customized. The Actions pane needs a little update and separate sub-panes may be the easiest way to replace the most common use of configurator panels.

There isn't a new Bridge CC to install via the CC menu app today? Mac 10.8.5 Bridge CC 6.0.1.6

New applications available today for PS CC 2014, AI CC 2014 etc. but no new Bridge application to install? I installed the PS 2014 version but I just checked the Bridge version that is installed and it is 6.0.1.6.

The CC menu "Apps" tab say that Bridge CC is up to date, shouldn't it be version 6.1 bit 6.0.1 ?

Why are ACR > PSD files 10-20 percent larger than the same file resaved in PSD? I posted this many years ago and never found an answer. Now that my drives fill up quicker, I thought I might chase this question a little bit further.

Same .CR2 saved within ACR either with cmd-R or open ACR within PSD, the saved file is 34.5mb. Resave that same file (no edits) within PSD either with or without Max-compatible and the file is now 30.7mb. Another file that is 24.5 becomes 19.5MB.

Why the difference? Is ACR and PSD actually using different compression strategies?

gradient with dither creates artifacts beyond gradation

Photoshop CC / Mac (also occurs in CS6, I just never took the time to document it)

Create a gradient mask from 0 - 255, the mask contains a dot pattern in the area that extends beyond the gradation and should be a solid 0,0,0. The dot/pattern has a value of 1,1,1. The gradient was created with in the blue guides (see screen grab) with dither on. The dither is expected within that range but not beyond the gradation. I have tried with and without the "use Graphics Processor" checked.

To test this it's easiest to see against a transparent background, and enhancing with levels.

Is this a known feature

PS CC install requires CS6 and Bridge CS6 to be closed....

currently still with a permanent license suite, and contemplating jumping off the cliff -

My second computer (laptop) changes depending on where I'm going. With CC I understand that I can activate a third computer and then deactivate one of the previous computers. If I were to need to change once a month or once every 2 months, is it possible to keep installations on the 3 computers and switch back and forth. In the end there were always only be 2 computers active and only 1 being used.

sorry to use up some bandwidth on the forum, but I thought I'd post this info since there are a few photographers on the forum. Apparently Mac 10.8.5 update has broken some compatibility with CF card readers. Tried it on 2 Macs, both have 10.8.5 and both had errors and would not complete the copy.

Just returned from a shoot and thought I might have an issue. CF card would not read from either of the CF readers (Omniflash) that I have always used without any problem.

Tried it on a PC and all was fine. The only thing that I found that backs 10.8.5 as the culprit, is the following from Sonnettech:

So if you do get an error, don't worry the card is fine. Now I just need to find a 10.8.5 compatible reader....

autorecover stopped CS6

Other than the usual trashing prefs, repairing permissions etc. Anything specific to fixing auto recovery that has stopped working.

A couple crashes no files recovered, so I now have the AutoRecover folder visible while I'm working and no new files. Are recovery files moved to this folder after a crash, or should I see new files as they are save.

Mac 10.6.8 / 13.0.5 x64 no recent changes , "Automatically save recovery information" is checked in Prefs.

We installed a new printer. Works fine with all apps except for PS 13.0.4 mac.

I've reinstalled the printer driver ( current driver etc), restarted etc. PS doesn't seem to hold the default paper sizes and will not print to the new printer ( it will print to another printer on same network).

Any prefs specific to printers with Photoshop that I can trash? and hopefully not have to trash all prefs.

sorry, but I just don't get the UI on photoshop.com, I know that it's supposed to be the feature request forum but for me it's a bit of a dysfunctional forum platform, it's seems like a hodgepodge of a tech forum and a social network ( I do realize that it's just my opinion, and I haven't really given photoshop.com a chance )

btw - I was experiencing some random weirdness from my tablet, most common was extreme sensitivity. What seems to have worked for me was to locate the "Wacom Tablet Utility" which is installed with the driver and use this to remove all preferences

When using ACR > Save As to save a bunch of PSD files from raw files the resulting PSD file sizes are larger.

for example:

if I output and save from ACR directly to a folder as a PSD, I'm seeing the file size at 63.1 MB

If I open the raw file to PS and save it within Photoshop to a PSD file the file size is 56.1 MB ( this is true whether the Max Compatible is turned on or off... probably because it's a flat PSD file)

why the difference? same output settings from ACR, bit depth etc.

The file saved out of ACR appears to be "tagged" as a Maximum compatible file even though it is flat, so subsequent saves, even if the PS pref is set to Never for maximum compatibility are disregarded. Whereas the same file that was opened into PS from ACR and then saved with the Never PS pref behaves correctly.

Is there a preference setting within ACR to not save the PSD's as Maximum compatible?

drag non-SO layer from one open PS document to a different open PS document and convert to SO.....

is there keyboard shortcut to place the non-SO layer as an SO while dragging into the receiving PS document?

I'm just looking for a single event solution, not other methods of converting after it's there, and wondering if there's a shortcut command that I've missed?

There have been some posts about dropbox and quicken scheduler causing problems. Has it been determined that the reports are correct and they do create problems? Is there a repeatable issue that I can test for, or does it effect all computers and therefore I should just avoid using DropBox?

Fortunately this computer doesn't run Quicken, but I have just installed DropBox, should I keep it off until this thing is fixed? Also, is the problem with PS or with these apps (the underlying question is whether the other developers have been notified) ?

number layers option, move layer to position

not naming of layers... but a fixed numbering of layer position (along with the custom names) the same way code/text editors number lines.

rationale: when moving through tons of layers it can get difficult to target and move layers by their names, for example it would easier to find position/layer # 57 than it is to find a layer named "color layer green". But it's important to have the custom name as well to help identify it. So layer numbering would help with the position, and the naming would help with identifying what it is.

Yes you can ctrl-click to locate layers but moving/dragging them within a long list of layers can get messy. So, after numbering the layer positions is added to the layers pane there could be an additional option within the drop-down or layers menu to move selected layer to position #57

not sure if this one is just my computer, or if it's already been posted, I haven't had any time to explore.

1. cmd-T to transform any object (works with either a vector shape or a bitmap object on a layer)

2. rotate manually above 46 or greater degrees ( either cc or ccw), important don't apply the transform. These steps need to be made before accepting the transform.

3. using the control key click and choose distort from the drop-down and push a corner in.

4. using the control key click and choose warp

5. the manipulation of the mesh is opposite, for example the bottom right handle will manipulate the upper left.

just me.... or repeatable?

defining paths in scripts..... in need of a guru

Here's a problem that Bridge scripts are having...

If you have a volume named Users, the image processor, 1-2-3, AOM scripts won't run because as the paths are defined they will look in the volume "User" not the folder "Users" for files etc.... it's described better here:

the problem also exists if you try to use the merge HDR pro script, if you have a volume named "Applications" on your desktop.

you can replicate these problems by simply naming any external drive "Users" for the output script errors, or "Applications" for the HDR script errors. After renaming simply try any of the above scripts.

Adobe is currently looking into fixing the scripts, but I know there are some scripting gurus around here that might have already encountered these types of problems and might have a speedy fix to the problem.... any thoughts?

I'm updating Ae, Fl and Pr this morning and the update installer requires that the ESTK, AI and PS be closed for the update. What is being updated across the entire suite? and in a situation where one of our computers uses a standalone version (non-suite) of PS is something not being updated without this update?

script error on Mac when Win7 computer is mounted

The following is a link to a bug that was posted previously on the PS and Bridge forum. I was hoping that someone with scripting expertise might be able to make some guesses as to why a couple of us are seeing this behavior.

The brief description - I am using CS5 PS MAC 10.6.5 (effected all versions 12. 12.0.1, 12.0.2 and all OS's 10.6.3-10.6.5) when I mount a Windows 7 computer onto my desktop I get errors in DrBrowns 123, imageprocessor scripts, and AOM. I am not accessing the Windows 7 computer or writing to it, all operations are on the Mac, just mounting the computer on the desktop causes the problem, and unmounting the Win7 computer fixes the problem. This does not occur when I mount a Windows XP computer onto the same Mac.

Since it appears that it's difficult recreate the problem, I welcome any guesses or random thougths as to what is in the scripts or the Win7 computer that is causing this conflict. I have yet to look into changing the Win7 network to fix it because I'm not sure where to look.

So to sum-up:

1. Bridge CS5 is throwing the same error messages on startup, and when using the Output module to save to the local harddrive, as posted by <JM> at the start of this thread.

2. The errors are fixed by unmounting any Windows-security enabled CIFS shares, in our case, from a Netapp.

3. UNIX-security enabled CIFS shares from the same Netapp do not cause any errors.

dragging layer to open image restricted

CS5 -

the area below open panels restricts dragging layers, tested OK on my version of CS4 and seems to be a new problem. This is true if you drag from the image area or the layers panel.

just wondering if anyone can hide Extras via keyboard cmd-H while a Layer Style window is open. It works by accessing the menu View>Extras.

put a bunch of guides on your image, invoke a layer style (such as bevel and emboss, drop shadow etc) and while the layer style options window is open, can you hide the guides via keyboard?

placing AI fails on first attempt

CS5 - I often find that when placing AI files, the operation seems to proceed, the bar advances and then the new SO disappears. The second attempt almost always works. I believe I have also seen this with transforming layers/groups etc. The memory (18gb) and dedicated scratchDisk appears OK.

anyone else experiencing this?

issues with opening files via finder CS5?

I have found on several occasions that I need to open files via File>Open, rather than double - clicking or dragging to PS icon, or from bridge. When this occurs it effects all types of files ( with correct file extensions ). Restarting PS fixes the problem. I found several other notes that seem to relate to this problem but I didn't see any resolve and wonder if this a known issue for CS5 12.0.1 / 10.6.4 ?

apply image to layers below target, or merge to new layer

I'd like an option to apply image from source: "layers below the target layer", instead of the current options of merged or choosing a layer.

possibly a more flexible and faster method may be to choose a selection of contiguous layers and add a "merge to new layer" menu choice. This would merge the selected layers and flatten to a new layer above the selected layers.

This would be convenient for interim builds of layers and retaining layered work.

...... yes there are many ways to do this currently, this is a feature request.

within ACR how do I change the default Synchronize from "Custom Subset" to "Everything"?

It seems that all of the settings can be persistent with the exception of "Local Adjustments", is this because local adjustments would be specific to the size and position of the adjustments within the image?

I must be missing something.

In Essentials workspace can I sort the Folders Panel by date modified, not the Content Panel?, currently it is alphabetical, I can ctrl-click on a folder and choose sort but this only sorts the content view not the folders hierarchy within the Folders Panel.

If not it would be helpful to be able to move around beyond the canvas borders while creating paths when the image is magnified.

lots of errors Bridge CS5

I thought that I had bypassed most of the CS5 errors but it seems that as soon as I went to the output module in Bridge 4.0.2 and now 4.0.3x problems started. Now when I try to open Bridge I get a bunch of errors, see attachments below. If I do try to push forward and open Bridge and attempt outputting a simple pdf I get an error that now enough space... and there is plenty on startup, doc and app drives 300GB free on each.

I checked the permissions of the folder, rebuilt disk permissions and they seem to be OK, PS is working OK. 10.6.4 + graphics update, 18GB ram, quad-core intel MacPro

any thoughts would be appreciated.

filename in PDF portfolio?

Sorry for what I'm sure is an easy(lame) question.

I don't want to show the filename when creating a PDF portfolio and I've hunted for the answer without any luck.

How do I only show the image or show a custom text/ title but not the XXXXX.jpg filename?

OK, I had bunches of errors in my last discussion and it was a compound problem, the initial problem was caused by the buggy CS5 installer and using the CS5 installer cleaner and reinstalling fixed those issues. Many thanks to Omke and Paul.

So here's the interesting part. Once I cleared up the initial problems I was left with 2 symptoms, each of which disappear after a safe start or by using a new user.

symptom #1 - attempting to create or just preview a pdf via the output module would cause the following error:

symptom #2 Dr.Brown's 1-2-3 script would not write/read the xml file, so it would revert to the default menu settings, folder names destinations etc.

Since the problem would disappear in safe mode or with a new user I cleared the login/startup items and poof! the problem was gone. After a process of reloading the login items I found that it was a folder login on a Windows 7 computer that when loaded at startup would cause the error to occur, even though I wasn't trying to access any files or write to this computer. I could mount and unmount and the error would appear. I then mounted a folder on an XP that is on the same network and there was no problem. The only difference in the error if I mounted the Windows7 folder after startup, the error would be the following:

I am running Mac OS 10.6.4+ graphics fix, Quad-Intel, 18GB ram, bunches of drives.

I don't want to lead the answer into one direction, so if you have any thoughts it would be appreciated.

So there you go, trouble.... shoot me!

Dr Browns 2.0.4 not saving folder destinations setup etc?

before upgrading to CS5 I was using Dr Browns 2.0.3 and CS4, the menu would save the destination and file parameter setup, but with the current 2.0.4 it doesn't. Are there any prefs related to this script that I should trash or does the new version not save these parameters?

well..... Bridge has gone bad..... and I find that I need to reinstall the entire suite to install Bridge..... (feel free to fill in the blanks)

Does a new installation uninstall before installing? are there any best practices for a do-over?
