Opening project from Version Control -- need more efficient navigation path

Visual Studio Professional 2010

RoboHelp 11

When we open a project from Version Control (in Team Foundation Server), we perform the following steps:

Navigate to the Team Foundation Server MSSCCI Provider
Connect to a TFS Server
Choose the folder in TFS, which requires 6-7 clicks through the folder tree.

Is there a way in RoboHelp to 'remember' the location of the XPJ in Source Control so that we don't have to repeat the eight clicks each time?

Critical: Adobe RoboHelp 11 has stopped working from Visual Studio Professional 2010 Source Control

We have contacted Adobe for assistance, but I also wanted to post this question in case someone has experienced this and can quickly provide a solution.

Problem

I'm the original author of the Touchstone Help system. Last week we started getting two colleagues on board to work with me. On their systems, we configured RoboHelp to work with TFS in Visual Studio using MSSCI Provider 2010.

The original project had lots of conditional build tags. I removed them all and the expressions and checked everything into Source Control. When my colleagues got the latest files from Source Control and opened the project from Version Control, we noticed that their projects still had the conditional build tags along with other items that had long ago been deleted. After some research, we deleted the CPD and PSS files from Source Control and let RoboHelp create them when we opened the project. That solved those problems -- no more conditional build tags in the project.

Last Friday colleague A began experiencing significant problems. When she right-clicked a topic to view properties, RoboHelp stopped working. She has not been able to do anything in RoboHelp since.

That same day I attempted to look at the Version Control settings (which I'd had no problem accessing all week). RoboHelp crashed as soon as I clicked Tools > Options. Colleague B experienced the same problem today.

This morning I experienced colleague A's problem.

Bottom line: we are suddenly not able to run RoboHelp 11.

Our in-house Help desk person tried running the Visual Studio debugger. We get "An unhandled win32 exception in RoboHtml.exe [5404]". We also unhandled exceptions at various address with an Access violation reading location hex address.

After looking at Willem's site that lists the RoboHelp updates, we thought about installing them, but we were not sure whether to install ALL the patches or only Patch 11.0.3. If all the patches, we were not sure whether to install them in a particular sequence.

Three of us are starting to work on a Help project together. We are working from Version Control.

We will be setting up collaboration guidelines, such as, 'don't work on the same topic at the same time'.

However, when we open our projects, RoboHelp prompts us to check out the XPJ file and we are not sure what the effect is in a collaborative environment running in Source Control. Will we run into version conflicts?

The RoboHelp Help says that we don't have to check out the XPJ file when editing, only when editing project settings. However, RoboHelp won't let us click No in response to the prompt.

Good afternoon.

Running RoboHelp 11, integrated with Team Foundation Server and Visual Studio 2010.

When my two colleagues recently "got" the latest project files from Source Control, they also got items that had been removed or deleted. For example, I had removed all conditional build tags from my project, but their version still included the build tags. Eventually, thanks in part to an old post from Peter Grainge, we realized that the PSS in Source Control contained a lot of that old information. We deleted the PSS and stopped checking it into Source Control. Problem solved. No more conditional build tags or unwanted Single Source Layouts, etc. (I think the PSS got checked in by our Release Engineer when he was trying to solve some other problem. Two years ago it was not being checked in.)

I vaguely remember reading something somewhere once upon a time about not checking certain RoboHelp project management files into Source Control. So far I've not found any such information in the RoboHelp Help or online.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of RoboHelp HTML project management files, such as the PSS file, that should never be checked into Source Control?

Is there a way to show the current URL for a WebHelp topic in the browser?

RoboHelp 11, WebHelp.

When I open the WebHelp project, the URL displays the start page for the Touchstone Help project: ..../Documentation/Touchstone/Content/Content.htm.

As I go to different pages in the Help, the URL never changes.

Our client consulting personnel often like to copy a URL to send to a client who has a question about a particular topic.

Is there a WebHelp setting that supports display of the current URL?

Is there a "dummies" guide to setting up content categories?

Using: RoboHelp 11 on a Windows 7 system.

I've looked through the Help and I've looked at the sample project EmployeeCare2 (which has only one content category, US (default), and so doesn't show the benefit of having multiple categories). I still don't understand the best approach for setting this up. For example, do you need to create a unique TOC for each content category and then include only the relevant topics in that TOC?

We have several types of users for our Touchstone application

Underwriters
Reinsurance agents
Insurance agents
Business unit administrators
System administrators

Would I have to create a TOC for each type of user, including in it only those topics of interest to each user?

Would I then create browse sequences applicable to each user's typical workflow?

Has anyone seen any good documentation about this feature?

Note: In our current Help system, which uses WebHelp Pro, I had to, for various licensing reasons, create a TOC for each type of product analysis (e.g. Loss, Hazard, Geospatial, Data Quality). Each TOC included common topics and topics related only to the analysis type. In addition, each TOC contained conditional build expressions. When a user launches the Help menu, the user sees only the Help modules for their licensed products. While this works fine for our purposes, we ran into some odd behavior with browse sequences. It appears that the approach I took is similar to the way authors need to develop Content Categories.

RoboHelp HTML Version 11: Where can I find the version of RoboEngine that ships with RH 11?

I'm asking this question because the Using RoboHelp HTML 11 guide says that the new context-sensitive Help API is supported only with RoboHelp Server or RoboEngine 3.0 or later.

Since we are considering deployment of WebHelp or WebHelp Pro to a company-hosted web server (instead of to RoboHelp Server), we want to make sure that we can use the CSH API to call CSH topics.

RoboHelp HTML 11.

Note: I'm posting here because I'm not sure which forum to post to, considering that this post covers RH11, WebHelp, WebHelp Pro, and RH Server. Sorry if there's a better place to post this issuue.

For the first two releases of our Touchstone application, we generated WebHelp Pro. It is integrated with our Touchstone application.
I inherited the WebHelp Pro approach, which we continued to use even though we were not using RoboHelp Server. Our intention was to move to RoboHelp Server one day.
The day came when we started to explore use of RoboHelp Server. However, after discussing deployment to an RH Server with an IT person, we were were told that we did not need to use RH Server and that it would be preferable for us to use a homegrown solution that is being used elsewhere in the company. He has now prototyped deployment of the current WebHelp Pro Help to a company-hosted web server with a Google Analytics script embedded on each page for reporting purposes.
The current WebHelp Pro contains context-sensitive Help.

I am now considering doing what several of you have told me to do in the past -- use WebHelp instead of WebHelp Pro when not using RoboHelp Server.

Are there any 'gotchas" that I may want to consider? I know that WebHelp has some features, such as Content Categories, that are not in WebHelp Pro, and that WebHelp's navigation properties are a bit different, too, for example, the support for breadcrumbs and browse sequences.
Will the developers have to do anything to make sure that context-sensitive Help continues to work correctly between the Touchstone application and the WebHelp? Can they still use the CSH API to call the CSH topics?

Running RoboHelp 10 and RoboHelp 11 on the same system

Background

Windows 7, 64-bit operating system.
Upgraded RoboHelp 10 to RoboHelp 11 this week. Upgraded my RH10 WebHelp Proj project (released with our 2.0 application) to start editing for release with 3.0 application next June .
The upgrade did not uninstall RoboHelp 10.
I work from within Visual Studio 2010 Professional. (I know that this is not a Source Control thread, but my issues are intertwined here.)
I create WebHelp Pro (even though we are not yet publishing to RH Server, although we're working on it!).
I check the output into Release folders in Souce Control, and the build picks up the files for installation with our application.

Questions

If I need to update the 2.0 application Help, does anyone know whether I can still use RH10 to update that project? (I've posed the question to an Adobe consultant, but have not yet heard back.)
If I can't use RH10 to update the 2.0 application Help (and have to open the 2.0 project in RH11 and, therefore, upgrade it), are there new things in RH11 that could affect the WebHelp Pro output and, therefore, affect the use of the WebHelp Pro HTM files by the application? (Our release engineer believes that, for version control purposes, I must make changes to the 2.0 project in the same RH Client used to develop it.)

RH Server 9 and RH HTML 11 experiences

Multi-authoring with source control with RH10 and RH11

Situation:

Writer A is running RH10. Writer A opens Project A, from Visual Studio Source Control, which is connected to a Team Foundation Server.
A new employee, Writer B, has been given RH11.
Writer A can't install RH11 until after mid-June because of tight schedules (can't afford any upgrade problems).
Writer B is supposed to work on the same Help project. (We know that RoboHelp does not support checking out the same file at the same time.)

If Writer B configures her version of RH11 to work with TFS and Source Control, can she open Project A and work on it (from Source Control) without causing problems for Writer A?

RoboHelp 10: Problems generating Printed Documentation

Windows 7 Enterprise, Service Pack 1, 64-bit operating system

Office Professional Plus 2010 Versions 14.0.7106.5001 (64-bit)

Visual Studio 2010 Professional. I open RoboHelp from within Source Control (have been doing it for two years).

Problem

Sometime after moving to RoboHelp 10, and even after successfully generating Printed Documentation output, I encountered a major problem generating Printed Documentation from RoboHelp: “Internal error encountered. Failed to generated Printed Documentation”. The error occurred when I tried to generate Printed Doc using my default TOC, which looks something like this:

Book 2

Book 3

Topic C

Topic D

Based on an old Peter Grainge reply to someone about a similar problem, I removed all but the first topic from the Chapter Layout pane and generated the Help. Everything was fine until I got to the topics after Book 3. At that point everything started to fail again. When I removed Topics C, D, etc. from the Chapter Layout pane, the output was built successfully.

I tried moving Topics C, D, etc. to the top of the Chapter Layout pane, and got the same error. I tried creating a new folder and put Topics C, D, etc. into that folder. Failure after failure.

As an experiment, I removed all the Topics C, D, etc from the Chapter Layout pane, but then added them to the Print Document Section Layout pane (not where I want them). The Printed Documentation built successfully.

During attempts to build with Topics C, D, etc. in the Chapter Layout pane, I kept getting a Word error: Word is trying to recover your information. After that there was always a failure.

Selecting PDF as the output did not work when the Topic C, D, etc. files were at the bottom of the Chapter Layout pane.

I create a new TOC and a new Printed Documentation SSL. Failed to generate.

As a matter of reference, I've been generating Printed Documentation from the same TOC for more than a year and so cannot figure out what has changed in RoboHelp or Word to cause this grief .

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Forced to close RoboHelp after generating SSLs in order to edit content

I have reported this as a bug, but wonder whether any of you have had similar experiences and, if so, how you resolved it.

Steps to reproduce bug:

Open project from Visual Studio Source Control (Team Foundation Server).
Select a Single Source Layout and generate the output.
Try to edit a topic. The Check Out dialog box says "To modify this document, the files in the list below need to be checked out from version control. Do you want to check out these files."
Click Yes.

Results:
The Cannot Complete Operation dialog box appears. "The files in the list below could not be checked out from version control. Exclusive access to these files is required to modify this document."
Click Close, close RoboHelp, and restart RoboHelp.

Expected results:
The files should be checked out from version control with exclusive access when I click Yes to check them out.
When I look in Source Control Explorer, the file I tried to check out is not even checked out. Even manually locking the file for edit from Source Control does not free the file for editing in RoboHelp.

Rename a character style in RH10

I tried to rename a character style in default.css to "Code inline". I did this because the other styles (the default styles) included spaces in the style name, e.g. "Expanding text" and "Glossary text".

Eventually I discovered by accident that "CodeInline" works, but not "Code inline". I could not find any naming guidelines in the Help, and so thought that this might be useful to post.

RoboHelp 10: Unhandled win32 exception in RoboHTML.exe [9058]

After running into this problem, I looked in the forums and found similar experiences. I'm just posting this for informational purposes.

This only began occurring after upgrading from RoboHelp 9 to RoboHelp 10. Here's what happens:

Open project from Version Control.
Open master page.
In table at bottom of page, try to edit the date ("Updated May 30, 2013").
Error message appears: "Adobe RoboHelp 10 has stopped working."
Click Debug.
Visual Studio Just-In-Time Debugger appears with the error message.

When I open the project again, I can edit without any problem. I suspect that it's the mere fact of editing that causes this, although I haven't experimented with editing another topic. I'll try that when I open the project tomorrow.

I'm also going to try deleting the CPD file, which another poster suggested in 2009.

RH10. How to make Home button on toolbar and Home link in 'breadcrumbs' area go to the same location

(I don't know what's wrong with the editor these days. Only choice is HTML with tags or this editor that suddenly decided to put my text in italics and won't let me remove it! Previously it wouldn't let me create line breaks. )

I'm using: RoboHelp 10, WebHelp Pro Single Source Layouts (though not using RoboHelp Server).

I've got five SSLs, each with their own unique Table of Contents. The TOC for each licensed module includes the Core Help topics.

Core Help
Help for licensed module 1
Help for licensed module 2
Help for licensed module 3
Help for licensed module 4

The default topic for the Core Help is "Introduction.htm". The default topic for each licensed module is the introductory topic for that module.

In the Core Help, clicking the Home button on the toolbar opens "Introduction.htm". Clicking the Home link in the breadcrumbs area, e.g. "Home > Managing Data Sources > Creating a Database", also opens "Introduction.htm".

In a licensed module, clicking the Home button on the toolbar opens "Introduction.htm". BUT, clicking the Home link in the breadcrumbs area, e.g. "Home > Loss Analysis, opens the introductory topic for the licensed module. Our QA group has filed a bug against this behavior. They feel that clicking the Home button and clicking the Home link should take you to the same place.

All the modules use a common window with a Two Pane view and all the WebHelp Pro buttons, including "Home (Skin: NGP Help)" selected.

They also use a common skin. The properties for the Home button are: Item Name and Text = "Home". The button links to "Introduction.htm", with a dependency of "Release\Core\Introduction.htm".

Is there an easy way to achieve the results desired by QA, where clicking Home always opens "Introduction.htm", while opening the licensed Help always opens to the introductory topic for the module? Disclaimer: I don't know how to script, if that's a possible solution.

Is design view missing from RoboHelp's new Find and Replace editor?

I just started using RoboHelp 10 and was excited about the new Find and Replace feature. However, it seems to force the user to edit in the HTML editor (which is very difficult when the topic has tables). Am I missing some preference setting?

The only workaround seems to be to to find a topic and then track it down in the Project Manager list and open it in the normal fashion.

Microsoft JScript runtime error with twisty2a.js in RoboHelp 10

In my RoboHelp 9 WebHelp Pro project, the twisty2a.js ran perfectly for Show All / Hide All. The script is located in the root folder, along with the Show All and Hide All buttons.

In the past few weeks I had my computer replaced and I upgraded to RoboHelp 10. I'm now running Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1 with a 64-bit Operating System, and IE 9.0.8112.16421.

A few days ago I opened the RH9 project in RH10. The conversion appeared to go smoothly, with the exception of some strange formatting in my tables.

Today I noticed that Show Help works, but that it never toggles to Hide All.

I attempted to open twisty2a.js, which had been configured to use the ShowHide One button method, to verify that it was still correct. When I try to open it in RH10, I get a Windows Script Host error:

Line 58, Char 1, "navigator" is underined, 800A1391, Microsoft JScript runtime error

Does anyone know whether this is a RoboHelp issue with the script or whether it might be a Windows configuration issue with my new system?

I think the problem may relate to the "Determine the browser" section in the script (I tried to insert a PNG, but got an error message ).

BTW, I tried to format this discussion better, with bullets and indents, but the editor is quite balky. It doesn't even like it when I press Enter to create an empty line.

Does RoboHelp 9 support creation of footnotes in tables (or anywhere)?

Branching does not work with RH9, TFS, & Microsoft Visual Source Control

Our release engineer, who is experienced with TFS and Source Control, has not been able to successfully branch the Release 1 project to a Release 1.5 branch in source control.

After some experimenting, he found that the XPJ file is not being updated with the correct path. He edited the path to the new path, but finds that there is still something in RH that is holding on to the original path.

Does anyone know whether this is a known problem and whether Adobe RoboHelp plans to fix branching in a future release? (Or is it fixed in RoboHelp 10?)

WebHelp Pro issue regarding Help name that appears in browser address bar

Forced to restart RoboHelp after generating output

Good morning.

Using: Windows 7, Internet Explorer 9, RoboHelp 9.0.1.232. Visual Studio Source Control 10.0.40219.1 SP1Rel, and Team Foundation Server.

I open the project from source control.
After I click Generate (for WebHelp Pro and PrintedDoc), the "Critical error of Source Control Provider. Please restart IDE." message appears.
When I try to check out a file for editing, the "Cannot Complete Operation" dialog box appears with the message that "The files in the list below could not be checked out from version control. Exclusive access to these files is required to execute the selected action.

After not finding an answer in this forum, pasted the error into a search engine and found this post from October 2012 by RoboWizard: "One thing to check is the actual output location of the WebHelp generated files. Note that I don't use TFS, but I'm well versed in how RoboHelp functions. The first step is to delete the files from the output folder location. So it seems logical to assume that if you also have that location in TFS, the issue may stem from RoboHelp's attempt to clear the output folder."

Before generating the output, I always delete the current output from within Source Control, where the Source Control folders are associated with folders on my desktop. After verifying that my local folders are empty, I generate the output and add the files to my Source Control Release folders. Then, when I try to edit another file, I get the errors noted above.

Has anyone resolved this problem?

Is there a way to set up browse sequences for project with multiple TOCs and conditionalized modules

I'm using RoboHelp 9 with WebHelp output.

I've got five outputs, one of which contains Help for common functions, while the other four contain Help for licensed modules. When a user opens the Help for a licensed module, the user sees the core Help and the licensed Help. In addition, files are conditionalized so that searching for unlicensed content from a licensed Help module brings up nothing.

I've been troubleshooting problems with the Previous Topic and Next Topic which, thanks to William, I learned are related to browse sequences. After trying assorted configurations, I've got a couple of questions:

Does RH support only a single browse sequence in a project, even when the project has multiple outputs & TOCs?
If RH supports only a single browse sequence, does that mean there is no way to create a unique browse sequence for each separate output?
If RH supports multiple browse sequences, what is the workflow?

I also maintain a 'master' TOC that contains all the modules, both common and unlicensed. What I've done for now is to autocreate a browse sequence based on the 'master TOC'. When I generate output for a licensed module, which is conditionalized, I only see the TOC for that module and, therefore, can only browse between books and subbooks in that module. I've also verified that topics that do not appear in the conditionalized module, such as for another licensed module, do not appear in the Search results list either.

RH9 WebHelp problem with Next and Previous Topic buttons

The Next Topic and Previous Topic buttons don't work as expected. For example, if I navigate to several topics and click Previous Topic, I expect to see the most recent topic that I viewed (similar to using the Back button in a browser to see the previous page). However, the Previous button is either not available or takes the user to a random topic, and the Next Topic never brings up the next topic.

I inherited this project, my first experience with RH9, and so am not sure whether the previous author included something in the project to make the buttons show up or whether these buttons are part of the default WebHelp interface. I've looked in the Single Source Layout properties for each output, but don't see any place to specify info about these buttons.

As you'll see in the screen capture, this is not about Browse sequences (I saw that there were other questions about Next and Previous as related to Browse sequences).

All help appreciated because this bug was found by QA and they'd like to fix the problem in the next patch ...

RH9: How to troubleshoot Show More | Show Less command in RoboHelp 9

Good morning:

I inherited a RoboHelp v9 WebHelp Pro project in which the master page includes the follow text/hyperlink.

I think that it's supposed to show more or less drop-down or expanding text. But it doesn't work. Here's what happens:

Click drop-down text.
Click Show Less.
View Script Error:
- "Unable to get value of the property "indexOf", object is null or undefined.
- URL: ...... /twisty2a.js

The Baggage files folder includes twisty2a.js, which is included in the Help output folders.

Do I need to modify the "Hyperlink [javascriptvoid(0)]:] to point to the script?

Problems with RH 9Printed Documentation not displaying some popups, drop-downs, and links

I generate a Word document for reviewers. PrintedDoc properties include: Retain hyperlinks; Include drop-down text; Include expanding text.

Sometimes the Word 2010 document includes hyperlinks, sometimes it doesn't.
Popups typically don't work in the Word document.
Drop-down and expanding text appear intermittently in the Word document.

Has anyone experienced this and have a solution?

RoboHelp 9 has stopped displaying tooltip to identify expanding text, etc.

In the following paragraph, base current is expanding text. Until a couple of weeks ago, moving the pointer over drop-down text, expanding text, and pop-ups, would display a tooltip identifying the type of dhtml or popup. Does anyone know how to fix this?

You can also create new exchange rate sets and delete existing exchange rate sets,
and modify the base currency for any exchange rate set other than the AIR Default
set. You select exchange rate sets when you generate exposure views, run analyses,
and view results.

Master page: header changes are not reflected in existing topics

A few months ago this forum helped me to troubleshoot and fix problems with the Show More | Show Less command that I inherited from a previous writer. I chose to use the Single Button approach and used this code, on the Master Page, for "onclick":

This worked fine until recently when I changed the logo in the left cell of the header table. Today I discovered that the img src = line had gone away. And so I re-entered it, and it works fine on new topics, and on some, but NOT all topics.

Here's what happens on an older topic:

Preview the topic.
Click Show All button. A Script Error message appears: "The value fo the property 'ShowAll' is null or undefined, not a Function object. Code = 0. file = ...../Help/Administration/rlt1F1.htm.

I tried setting the Master Page to None and then re-setting it to Main. That does not help.

The only workaround I've found so far is to create a new topic, copy the content from the old topic, delete the old topic, and rename the new topic using the old topic's name. But that is very tedious.

Any thoughts on how to fix the problem without recreating every topic?

RH9. How to restart numbering in a multilevel list

My goal is to achieve the following:

I'm using a List Style called Numbered. For the subset, I select "Start List at level 2".

BUT, "step 4" now has substeps "d", "e", and "f" under it and I can't find a way to make the second set of subsets restart at "a" again.

I tried right-clicking the first substep in the second set (e.g. in 4a), selecting Bullets and Numbering, and then, on the Numbered tab, selecting the a. b. c. icon and setting Restart numbering to 1. The step now has an "a", but the font and indents are all wrong.

(I didn't create the CSS or the list styles, but have been trying to figure it out by searching the forum, the Help, and Peter G.'s wonderful site.")

All thoughts welcome.

Is it worth going from RH9 to RH10?

We create basic CHM and WebHelp systems that do not currently need to run on mobile devices or be socially enabled, which appear to be major features of v10.

We've got a team of four writers using v9 right now and Adobe won't let us purchase v9 for a new writer starting in September.

My manager is trying to figure out whether we should buy v10 for the new writer, but leave the rest of us on v9 for now. We have some concerns about moving to a new release of RH while we are trying to produce Help for our product release this fall.

I searched the forum for RH10 experiences, but didn't find many conversations, perhaps because the product is too new.

We'd love to know whether you're having good or bad experiences moving to RH10 and, if there are bad experiences, what areas should we be concerned about?

RH9. Is it still not possible to use snippets in numbered lists?

I saw that this was true in 2008, and it does not appear to be fixed in RH9. When I add a snippet to a numbered list, it gets a "DIV" and appears below the numbered text.

Problem setting Home URL

I inherited a project whose output is WebHelp Pro.

When the user clicks Home, the 404 error message appears -- File or directory not found.

I opened the Window Properties (WebHelp Pro) dialog box to check the URL, but could not find any field to check the Home URL.

I looked in the Help, which says that "In WebHelp Pro, you can view settings after the project is published to the server." Does this mean that there is no way for me to specify the desired URL in the project?

If that is the case, do I need to generate straight WebHelp instead of WebHelp Pro? I think the previous writer generated WebHelp Pro output because the company was thinking about providing server-based Help.

I was hoping that the "Advanced window Destinations properties" applied to WebHelp Pro because it enables you to define the URL to display when clicking Home. Bit I think it only applies to HTML Help .

Problem with empty folder showing up in incorrect release folder

Thanks to several forum contributors I've got conditional build expressions working correctly to create five Single Source Layouts. To keep it simple, I'll use letters for the SSLs.

C (licensed module)	C	C + A
D (licensed module)	D	D + A
E (licensed module)	E	E + A

As you can see, all the licensed modules can access topics in the Core Help, but cannot access topics in any module that they have not licensed.

There are no untagged topics in the Help.

When I generate the Help for the licensed modules, RoboHelp creates an empty folder in each target Release folder that is related to one of those licensed modules. For example, the B, C, D, and E Release folders ALL contain an empty E folder.

I have gone through the project with a fine-tooth comb, verifying that the tags are correctly applied, checking images and baggage files, etc. But that empty E folder continues to appear.

Any thoughts about the next step that I might want to take to clean this up?

Has anyone experienced check-in conflicts between RoboHelp 9 and Visual Studio 2010?

Here's a description of what happens when I try to edit the properties of more than one Single Source Layout (SSL) in a single RoboHelp session:

Open RoboHelp 9 project in Visual Studio 2010.
Edit the properties of a SSL named "Layout A". When prompted by RoboHelp, check out the .SSL file.
Save and generate the output.
Edit the properties of the SSL named "Layout B". When prompted to check the .SSL out from version control, click Yes. RoboHelp displays the Cannot Complete Operation dialog box: “The files in the list below could not be checked out from version control. Exclusive access to these files is required to execute the selected action.”
Shut down RoboHelp, re-open the project, and can then edit Layout B. I have to do this for each layout whose properties I edit.
As an experiment, check the .SSL for Layout C out of Source Control (“Check Out – Prevent other users from checking out and checking in”), edit the properties of the SSL, and click Check In All from RoboHelp. In Source Control, the file shows as checked in; in RoboHelp, the SSL shows as checked out (the red check arrow appears to the left). Checking everything in from within RoboHelp does not check in the SSL for Layout C, and when I try to edit the properties for Layout D, the Cannot Complete Operation dialog box appears.

Since I'm working with five SSLs, this problem is a nuisance (but not a showstopper). Should I be following a different process here?

Problem applying conditional build tag to more than one folder

I applied a conditional build tag to a folder in the HTML Files tree. Success.

Then I tried applying a tag to a different folder. I said yes to checking out the files, but nothing happened. I can't seem to apply a tag to more than one folder in the tree.

My project has five outputs. Four of the outputs are for licensable modules. We don't want the users of licensed modules to see Help topics for modules that they have not licensed. This means that we also need to make sure that only users of licensed modules get to see the Help topics for those modules.

Therefore, based on a reply about how to exclude topics from search results, I am trying to conditionalize the folders, in the Project Manager tree and set the output properties to exclude all topics except those that belong to the output.

For example, I have a Hazard module and a Hazard output. I want to use a build expression such as "NOT Main" so that I can exclude all Main topics from the Hazard output. But I can't do this when RoboHelp won't apply the Main tag to anything.

I know that this will be a good approach when it works. I set up the "Main" output to exclude Hazard topics and none of them showed up.

All help much appreciated.

Problem excluding search results

I have a Help project, inherited from another author, that currently contains topics for all the application modules. However, since some of the application modules must now be licensed, engineering wants to allow only users of a licensed module to view the associated Help.

I created five new TOCs, one for the core Help and one for each of the licensable programs. I then deleted from the core Help TOC the books for each of the licensable programs. (I deleted the core Help books and pages from each of the TOCs for the licensable programs.

I then created a duplicate of the original Online WebHelp for a new TOC named "Core Help" and edited the properties (new project name, new output folder, new table of contents). I selected the Exclude Unreference Topics from Output check box.

I generated the new output. When I searched for a keyword -- "hazard" -- associated with one of the licensable programs (Hazard), the results included all the Hazard topics that I removed from the Core Help TOC.

I read RoboHelp search basics" topic and don't think that "hazard" is in most of the project components affected by the "Exclude unreference topics from search" option. The previous author never created an index. Browse sequences are used within a Help book, and do not cross books. The default topic does not contain "hazard". There are no See Also or Related Topics keywords.

The project does contain older topic-level CSH Conditional Build tags that were previously used for 'hover' help in an older version of the project that was generated as a CHM. The layout properties does not include a conditional build expression. Is it possible that I need to exclude the CSH tags from the build?

The Hazard topics do contain links to a few common topics that are in the core Help module. For example, one Hazard topic contains a link to a Templates topic in the core Help. If this causes all Hazard topics to show up in the core Help, do I need to remove those hyperlinks and just use cross-reference text, such as, see the core Help for information about Templates?

Structure WebHelp project that limits access to license program module users

Where can I find information about the best way to structure a WebHelp project that needs to contain Help modules that will be accessible only to users who license the associated application? My project needs to contain core Help for the application and four modules associated with four licensable analysis program modules. I've done some research about merging Help projects, but that doesn't tell me how to set up the project or projects so that the user of program A, for example, can't see the Help for program B.

How can I get Help to open in RoboHelp HTML v9?

When I click Help > Contents & Index, RoboHelp spins its wheels for a while and then displays an error message: Adobe Community Help The page you requested is not available. Connect to the Internet and choose the link again.

My work system is always connected to the Internet, but the company blocks personal email, streaming sites, etc. Does anyone know what technology RoboHelp is using to generate the Help? Do I need to give some specific information to our IT staff so that they can "unblock" the RoboHelp Help?

I looked in Tools > Options for a "use local Help" option, but could not find it.

How to work in RH9 when project is integrated with TFS and TFS server is down

My RoboHelp 9 project is integrated with TFS/Visual Studio. The server went down yesterday and won't be back up until late today.

If I open the project locally (rather than from Version Control), how do I eventually get the latest files (those that I've worked on locally) into Version Control?
