Hello,

We would like to explore the possibility of publishing our legacy RH10 webhelp to SharePoint 2013, either as webhelp or as HTML5 / native SharePoint ASPX.

Can anyone confirm whether RH10 is compatible with SharePoint 2013, or whether we need to upgrade to RH11 to accomplish this?

Force PDF baggage file to open in Adobe Reader?

Hello, I develop WebHelp using RH10 and have noticed that in my published output, linked PDF baggage files launch in the users' browser window rather than in Adobe Reader. Is this something I can control?

This seems to be the case no matter how I set the options in the Hyperlink Properties dialog (Page Default, New Window. etc).

Using RH10, WebHelp

Hello, I would like to have a small text box appear "floating" over a specific page. This box would have the focus on page-open so that the user must click the box to close it and view the nornal page beneath it.

I've reviewed the usual RH resources online but do not find anything quite the same as this. Suggestions appreciated.

First, please do not move this question to the Server forum because plainly part of the problem is happening before the output is published.

After generating output and choosing FIle > View> Primay Layout, every thing looks OK except that if I click the Search button, I get the Search input box and below it, the message:

Error: Failed to initialize database.

If I enter any valid search term, the only response is:

null

We publish our output to two identically configured WebPro servers. After publishing the above output, the result is that on one server, the published output works fine, including searches. On the other server, clicking the Search button produces a completely blank navigation pane.

These results are infinitely repeatable despite numerous server restarts, deletions of SSL folders, CPD files, all the usual suspects.

SO the questions I have are:

What database is failing to initialize?
What would account for two different published output results on two identically configured servers in the same environment (Windows 7, IE 9) ?
What do I need to do to get a response from Adobe technical support to my requests for assistance??

We publish WebHelp to our intranet. The content is general operational guidance rather than application help, so users access WebHelp directly via a URL to an IIS Web server.

An error occurs randomly across the user base, but too frequently, causing IE to open just the top toolbar of the landing page (index.htm), leaving the topic pane and navigation pane hidden. The usual corrective is for the user to do a forced reload (Ctrl+F5).

Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?

Hello,

I know this general topic has been well-covered here but a great deal depends on my getting it right the first time.

I have a large RH10 WebHelp project with a broken Search function that nobody seems to be able to fix. Apparently a corrupt file somewhere.

I know that I can create a new WebHelp project with a correctly functioning Search. Therefore my hypothesis is that I can create a new project as an empty "foundation" and then import (or copy?) all the existing content into it. If that works, I can then replace the current, broken, production WebHelp system with the new one.

The main complication is that the entire project is held in source control (Microsoft TFS). Obviously, if I simply copy or import files from that project, they will remain "bound" to the source repository.

What is the safe way to break this link in copied or imported files?

The production system must remain available to users, under version control until I am sure I have a working replacement. Then, when that happy day arrives, I can add the replacement project to TFS (not sure how to do that, but will cross that bridge...etc)

Full-text search in published project finding zero results for multiple-word entries

I manage a large WebHelp project that has produced correct search results in the past. At some point the search function stopped finding results for entries of more than one word. For example, it won't find any results for "project plan" even though searching for either "project" or "plan" separately will correctly return results including the numerous pages containing either "plan project" or "project plan".

TCS support is having a look at the files. So far we have found that this occurs under Google Chrome as well as IE 10, and also that the same error occurs if we publish to FlashHelp.

BTW, I have another similarly configured project that does not display this error.

I was hoping someone might have encountered this and can suggest a fix.

Broken WebHelp, missing *.js files in whxdata folder

Hello,

I could use some additional brainpower. I have 6000+ users waiting for me to fix a broken policy/procedure WebHelp system. Here's the state of play.

•         When we publish the existing project to WebHelp Pro we get full-text Search but no TOC auto-sync.
•         When we publish the existing project to WebHelp (local drive) we have TOC auto-sync but no Search ("Fail to initiate database" and null results).
•         If I create and publish a small NEW WebHelp project (local drive) we get both TOC Sync and Search.
•         If I publish the same small NEW project as WebHelpPro to RH server, we get Search but no TOC auto-sync.

Adobe has acknowledged that the broken TOC auto-sync is due to an RH Server bug (# 3019390) they do NOT intend to fix. The WebHelp system is nearly useless without an auto-syncing TOC. But it is also useless without a Search capability.

There are *.js files missing from the SSL>whxdata folder. For some reason I am unable to insert images here using the toolbar button above ("server error").

Can anyone tell me how to permanently restore the missing *js files to the project? (The missing files DO get generated when I create a new project).

I need to link from topics in one WebHelp Pro project (published on a Robo Server 9) to topics in another project published on the same server.

When specifying the target of the hyperlinks, should I use the version of the URL that has contains escape characters in place of slashes, etc., or should I use the version that has the ascii characters?

Hello,

A couple of years ago, someone here kindly provided a script that we use to give our users a feedback e-mail link from any page in the published output. We want to improve the script so that it returns a link not just to the specific page, but to the specific page PLUS the TOC pane.

Currently, the script defines a variable:

var str = location.href

The resulting link is:

http://projectname/robohelp/robo/server/general/projects/projectname/pagename.htm

What modification to the variable or the script is required to produce this link instead:

http://projectname/robohelp/robo/server/general/projects/projectname/default page#pagename.htm

The intention being that the added default page and hash mark would cause the link to open the page in the complete default frameset rather than just the page without the TOC?

How to construct a shortcut to a topic for distribution?

I find that if I "copy shortcut" of a topic in the browser (IE), the resulting shortcut looks like this:

http://server.server/context/directory/server/general/projects/Myproject/Myproject.htm#top icname.htm

When I then use this URL on our intranet, it does find the correct topic, however the Window is not correct. Specifically, it is using the correct skin but it displays buttons in the toolbar that are NOT selected in the window properties. For example, I do not have "Glossary" selected, but it gives me the glassary button anyway.

However if the help system is opened via the standard URL which opens the first topic, the window is properly configured, and I assume this is because the string that opens the help system includes the name of the Window.

Is there a way to insert the Window name in a copied topic shortcut so that if a user enters a topic directly (without opening the helpfile using the standard URL) they will see the correctly confugured toolbar?

User "Favorites" not displaying correctly under IE9

Hello,

This relates to WebHelp Pro output from RH10 published to the Robo Server 9 and accessed using IE9.

When our users save favourite links to WebHelp Pro content pages, a link is saved. The link opens the correct *.htm page, however I note the following anomalies:

The toolbar displayed is not the correct toolbar from the skin – it is a default toolbar that displays default buttons rather than the buttons we have specified in the skin. For example, it displays the default “Glossary” button even though we have NOT selected the glossary button for our output.
Even though the Favorite link seems to open the correct page, the displayed URL in the IE browser bar is not pointing to the correct page. Instead, it points to the default start page for the project.
The Search function does not work in the same way as it does when the project is open via the standard project URL. Some search terms produce no results, whereas they do produce results when the project is opened in the normal way.

Can anyone suggest a fix?

The RH10 Project Manager includes a handy list of all the external URLs called from within the project. It would be even handier if it allowed editing.

The File Status pod lists alarge number of files that were deleted from the project by another user. These have the file status message "Removed from version control."

How do we clear these items so that they don't keep appearing in the list?

Hello. I have a large project that is under TFS source control. I would like some advice on how to safely clone a copy of this project to a separate location (not under source control).

In the past I ran into problems when copying a project under source control. I think I need to somehow unlink the project from TFS before copying it, but I am hesitant to do this without some expert guidance. Can anyone walk me through the steps for doing this safely? (By safely, I mean without altering in any way the state of the production files under source control.)

I will need to bring in all the contents of a smaller WebHelp project into a larger WebHelp project.

I have found some discussion of merging, but I think this is a different matter (unless I am mistaken). I want to permanently incorporate the content of the smaller project into the larger project.

Missing TOC books & topics in RH Server output -- is there a fix??

I've seen a post a few months old now reporting the problem of nested books and topics not showing up in WebHelp Pro RH9 Server output even though they display fine in the local output before and after publication.

Has there been a fix for this?

I have a large project, over 400 topics, and it seems to affect books that are nested at level 4 and below. I have a level 3 book with several level 4 books inside it. The published output shows only the first level 4 book, and its contents, but then it omits the remaining level 4 books in that group and jumps to the next level 3 book.

This is not a merged project.

When I run the TOC report, all content is shown correctly in the report.

Is RH10 compatible with Sharepoint 2013?

Hi,

I've been using RH for years, but I'm new at Captivate.

I want to have a rollover effect in a WebHelp topic, whereby the user can hover the mouse pointer over a graphic and a window will pop up. Inside the pop-up window will be hyperlinks to topics within the same WebHelp project.

My understanding so far is that I can insert a Captivate slide in WebHelp topic to achieve this. The Captivate slide would contain the background graphic, and a "rollover slidelet".

My question is, at what point do I create the hyperlinks to WebHelp topics in the slidelet? Must I do this in Captivate, and if so how do I specify the target path of the link?

Or can I do this linking after I embed the Captivate slide and slidelet into the WebHelp project?

How to specify caption in CSS table style definition?

RH has very flexible tools for designing table styles. And while the Table Properties dialog allows me to specify the caption placement for a particular table, I cannot find a way to automate this by embedding caption attributes as part of the project CSS table style.

I've looked around various RoboHelp-related blogs and the Adobe RoboHelp product documentation and have not found any very practical guidance for choosing output types. I have found generic descriptions of those formats, but nothing that really gives me some reasons for choosing one or the other in cases where the technical environment would support any of them.

I've worked extensively with WinHelp, HTML Help and WebHelp/WebHelp Pro, but the newer formats, specifically Air and Flash, remain rather exotic in my understanding.

For people who have used those two, what are the main factors that would make you prefer or not prefer one or the other over WebHelp? Let's assume the following:

single authoring (not collaborative)
content is process and procedure documentation
output is to be accessed on a server by people using a variety of devices -- desktop and mobile.

Based on their advantages to the users and the help designers, what factors (other than habit and familiarity, as in my case) would lead you to choose Flash, Air, or WebHelp?

Captivate demo hiding in WebHelp output

I imported a captivate demo (SWF) and it appears in the project design view and runs properly when I preview the topic in Design view. However when I publish output, the topic comes up blank. What am I missing?

Help with image map links to other topics please

Using RH10, generating WebHelp.

I've created a topic (call it Topic A) containing an image. The image has an image map that opens Topic B in a new self-sizing pop-up window.

Topic B in turn contains two links: one is in the form of a normal text hyperlink to Topic C; the other is in the form an image map to Topic C.

In testing, I get the following result consistenly after generating WebHelp output locally.

From Topic A, click the image hotspot to open a pop-up with Topic B. (All good)
From the Topic B pop-up, click the text hyperlink to Topic C. Result: Topic C opens as expected in the main window, replacing the pop-up. (All good)
Reopen the Topic B pop-up, and this time click the image hotspot. Result: The pop-up closes, but Topic A remains in the main window, and Topic C does not appear. (Not so good)

Can anyone explain why the two links (text and image map) from the same window to the same topic should produce different results?

I want both links to open Topic C in the main window.

Rollover image popups containing hyperlinks?

Hello, brand new to Captivate 6 but for now just need to create a single slide for use in a RoboHelp project.

I want the user to be able to roll the mouse over different areas of a background image, and have pop-ups appear that contain either text hyperlinks or hyperlinked image hotspots (these would be labelled boxes that point to intranet Web pages).

Would I use slidelets to do this? I don't find an option to insert hyperlinks. Is there another method?

Safely remove project from TFS source control temporarily

Adobe TCS support asked me to upload files to them for analysis in relation to a problem, so I did.

The project is under TFS source control, and now Adobe has come back asking for the files WITHOUT the version control.

Not surprisingly for Adobe, they have not given me the procedure for doing what they are asking me to do.

Can someone please advise how to proceed?

Can I build a TOC that consists of a list of hyperlinks to external Word documents -- by which I mean Word docs not linked or imported into the project but instead, residing on a shared network drive in an intranet environment. When the user clicks the TOC entry, the Word doc would open either in the content pane or in a new browser window.

Sortable table rows in RH9 output

In Peter Grainge's site, I found a javascript method for producing sortable table rows by clicking column headers but cannot get it to work. One problem appears to be that when I modify the HTML as specified, RoboHelp subsequently removes the <thead> tag and apparently some of the other manually added HTML as well.

When I run "preview topic" I get a table that lets me sort on any column, but only ony way; that is, z to a but not a to z.

Is there something about RH9 that requires a new javascript to enable this customisation?

RH9 Proj Mgr not showing the images

I am importing topics from one RH9 project into another. The topics come in fine, with images intact. However the images are not going into the Proj Mgr "Images" folder. In fact they cannot be seen anywhere via the Project Manager (yes I have selected Show All file types and yes I have tried toggling the Proj Mgr view).

RH does create subfolders within the Images node that are named after the topic folders into which I import the topics, however these show up as being empty. Why does RH9 create them and then not use them?

Windows Explorer shows me that the physical image files are sitting in the <topic name>_files folder that gets created when I import the topic. However, these files are not visible via the project manager.

If I cannot see the image files in the Project Manager, how can I move them into the Images folder? Is there an option I need to set to make the imported images visible in the Project Manager?

How to set up synonyms for users' searches

Using RH9 output to WebHelp Pro

I want to create synonyms so that when a user searches the Help for a certain word, WebHelp will return matches not only for that word but for other words that I have flagged as synomyms of that word.

For example, if a user searches on "proposal", I want the search results to include topics that have the word "tender" or "bid" with or without the exact match on "proposal". It isn't clear how I can make this happen.

Cannot connect to server

Our techs have just installed RH9 Server (newest version). It has been configured and I can open it using the URL //xxxx2dask01.xxxx.info:8080/robohelp.

In the RH9 WebHelp Pro Publish properties dialog I have:

Server Name = robohelp<Default>
URL= http://xxxx2dask01.xxxx.info:8080/robohelp.
Name and Password are exactly the same as I use to open the Server Admin in Explorer

I can successfully generate RH9 WebHelp Pro output. When I publish, I get the message:

Warning: Failed to publish to "robohelp". reason: Unable to connect to the RoboHelp server on http://xxxx2dask01.xxxx.info:8080/robohelp. If RoboHelp Server is not being used, generate WebHelp instead. More information on RoboHelp Server is available in the help file.

Where do I start looking for the problem?

What would be the reason it cannot connect even though I can do so using the same information?

RH9 application help "Contents & Index" broken

I have been using RH9 for months now and I still fail to grasp how the RH9 application help is supposed to work.

When I click the Help button in the main toolbar, I am supposed to choose from the available options. The option that looks TO ME like "normal" application online help functionality is the first one, called "Contents & Index".

So I click it, and what happens? After a wait, what happens is that our default IE browser home page opens (which is our corporate intranet home page).

So what the blazes am I supposed to do with THAT? Does that sound like "Contents & Index" to you? Well it doesn't to me either.

What is the reason for this "max connections" error?

On attempting a publish, the RH server is not contactable.

The Web ADmin has reported this message:

"java.sql.SQLException: Maximum possible connections are open and all the connections are busy. Kindly review the "maxload" in the server.properties file and adjust it according to the expected load."

What to do about these pesky drop-downs if generating ePub output?

I maintain a large RH9 WebHelp Pro project with several hundred topics and probably thousands of DHTML dropdowns.

My employers are now asking me about the possibility of "mobilising" the project. I understand that the ePub format does not handle dropdowns.

What are my options? Is there a scripting solution that would automatically convert all my dropdowns to mini-topics? Any other ideas?

Highlight search results option -- how to enable?

In some WebHelp output examples I see a Search dropdown in which the end user can select to "Highlight search results" (a checkbox) or to specify the number of "Search results per page".

However in my WebHelp Pro output I do not have these two options displayed. How do I enable these options to be displayed to the user in my WebHelp Pro project? I just have the Search input box but not the options below it. Where is this controlled?

In my project I have several topics dealing with expense claim and containing both those words.

Yet if a user does a simple search on the word "expense", it comes back with the "cannot find a good answer" response.

However if they search on "expense claim" they get the appropriate hits. What's happening here?

Displayed title in output is not correct -- where is it coming from?

In Project Settings > Project Title we have the label we want the users to see in the WebHelp output browser title bar.

However, in the browser the displayed title in the top browser bar is different from what we have in the Project Settings > Project Title. How do we change this?

The Project Title in Project Settings > Project Title is Myproject

In the server output, the browser bar shows:

http://Myproject-test/robohelp/robo/server/general/projects/Myproject/Temp_Project_for_Myp roject.htm

At one time we had the project named "{Temp_Project_for_Myproject" but we have changed it and we can't get rid of the old name in the output.

Any ideas?

I would like to know of any successful attempts to expand the search capabilities of WebHelp/WebHelp Pro end-users to include predictive searching (similar to what Google offers). Is it possible to couple a different search engine to a WebHelp project and give users (whether inside or external to the WebHelp interface) enhanced predictive search capabilities?

Does anyone know of a script or other "trick" that will produce this result?

When returning search results in published output, automatically open DHTML dropdowns containing the highlighted search term. Otherwise, users go to the listed page but cannot see the highlighted search term. There may be many dropdowns on a single page, resulting in some inconvenience for end-users of published output.

RH9, RH9 Server, WebHelp Pro, TFS source control

We are two authors working on a project. When one of us attempts to create a project, TFS blocks it saying that the project .fpj file must be checked out exclusive in order to create a topic.

Of course we can solve the problem by one of us checking it in so the other can create a topic. But should this really be necessary?

Sample script to pop-up txt box on mouse-over on skin toolbar button?

I am completely new to scripting. I have customised a toolbar button in the skin and while it is easy enough to place a hyperlink to be activated on click, I would also like to display a text caption when the user rolls over the button before clicking.

Can anyone provide or point me to an example of the required syntax?

Placeholder for topic heading in master page?

If I create a new topic with no master page selected, then the topic title that I type into the New Topic dialog becomes the topic heading in the new topic. Is good.

If I create a new topic using a master page, how do I get the same result? What do I have to put into the master page as a variable or placeholder so that the new topic title becomes the topic heading?

How to open a topic from external link with TOC showing

RH9, WebHelp Pro. When we create a shortcut to a topic other than the start page (for example a desktop shortcut), and then click from the desktop, it displays the WebHelp topic page with the TOC hidden. This is even though by default our TOC is showing when the WebHelp start topic is launched via the "Index.htm" link.

Is there a format for shortcuts that will force the TOC to be open on launching the topic?

Below is the CSS style definition for my dropdown hotspots.

A.dropspot {

cursor: hand;

font-family: Calibri;

font-size: 11pt;

color: #000000;text-decoration: none;

Problem is, no matter what I change the text color and size to (using the style editor in RH9 of course) it never changes in output, either WebHelp or WebHelp pro. Other attributes DO change -- for example I can include twisties or not, and they come through in generation, but NOT the font color or size for the text.

So even though the above show black text, in fact the generated text is not black -- it remains the previous color, which is blue.

Does this ring a bell with anyone here?

'Mail to' link with topic URL in Subject line?

On Peter Grainge's site, snippet 38 gives the code for e-mailing a link to a topic.

Before I go off in the wrong direction, is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to modify the code to capture the topic URL in the Subject line rather than in the body?

My intention is to create a "Feedback" button on the skin toolbar that would generate an e-mail to the Help content authors. In the body of the e-mail I would have the text "Please type your feedback here."

Trying to create multiline email body from mailto link.

Have tried hex values for carriage return and line feed (%0D%0A) as recommended by Microsoft http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa767737(v=vs.85).aspx but after generating and opening the e-mail from the link, those codes have no effect in the e-mail and in fact are removed from the source code RH during the save or generate.

I do understand that support for this is very inconsistent but our users are restricted to Windows 7,IE8, Outlook so there must be a reliable solution for this platform.

When users open the WebHelp on the server, it displays a URL in the browser tab that looks like this:

Is there any way the network admins can munge that so that it looks pretty -- like say http://projectname/robohelp/server
