Captivate project takes long time to load on LMS

So I developed a bunch of Captivate 7 modules for a course I'd been working on for some time. When I finally loaded these up on the LMS, I notice that when the modules are launched, a pop-up window opens with a grey background and just stays like that for up to 3-4 mins. I figured grey, because that's what I had set as the HTML page color in the skin editor. However the actual module contents take really long (3-4 mins) to load up. When I tried running all these modules locally from my computer, the grey screen fades into the splash animation within a second.

I figured that this was either due to a bandwidth issue or the LMS causing problems. So I then had these modules tested from our India and US offices (different internet connecttions, multiple LMSs). Same thing happened, takes up to 3-4 mins to transition from the grey screen to the splash animation (but loads up instantly when run locally). We then tried this on multiple LMSs like SABA, Moodle, and even tried this on SCORM Cloud and the same issue. The modules takes a long time to load up, so I kind of ruled out the LMS/bandwidth being an issue.

I'm speculating here, but what I think is happening is that the SCO is trying to download the entire module (about 10MB) to the users machine before it plays the splash animation -- if that's the case then is there a way to avoid that? I mean I don't want a 200 slide Captivate published project to be downloaded right from clicking the launch button -- it could stream through as the user advances through the module. Also, I've seen some pre-loader and Start/End options but not sure how those work.

Important to note here, the 3-4 min wait time from when the module is launched, is only for the first launch. If I were to close the browser popup (in which the SCO opened), and click launch again from the LMS, it's loads up almost instantly -- so I'm pretty sure something's happening in my Captivate project's loading settings which I can't put my finger on.

Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening and also what are some possible fixes to this. I can assure you that it's not an internet bandwidth issue because we've tested it on multiple internet connections and on several LMSs (even the client's LMS that this was tested on says that the initial load up takes too long).

How do I add an effect to a SmartShape on hover?

For example, I've created a green rectangle which is a smartshape and is being used as a button. I have two instances of this button on a slide and am trying to do the following:

1) SmartShape A (Green rectangle) = On hover, I want this green rectangle to change it's fill color to blue.

2) SmartShape B (Green rectangle) = On hover, I want this rectangle to have a 4px yellow border (the original had no border, i.e. stroke width =0)

How would I do this without using additional objects?

For example, I don't want to have a duplicate of this smartshape (for each instance), that is used as a rollover shape which superimposes the original shape on hover -- I dont even know if that would work, sounds okay in theory though.

But it would be great if someone could help me with this, I've been struggling for some time to figure out this effect.

Thanks so much,

Sean

Toggle button on Try-It disables incorrect click

Hi,

So in my Captivate project, I have a component called a Try-it wherein the learner is supposed to practice the steps (performing a task in the client system) based on information taught earlier in the module. The Try-it is a 'Training' type simulation and in which I had configured the Correct and Incorrect captions only (no hint captions). Now what I also added to the Try-it slides, is a button called "Steplist" -- clicking this button pulls up a panel (just a smartshape with an effect) that gives the illiusion like clicking on the Windows start button in the lower right. So far so good. The steplist smartshape is an object with 'Visible in output' unchecked to begin with and basically I just use a variable to trigger the show/hide of this panel from a button (another smartshape on the slide).

What I noticed is that since I added this steplist feature the actual try-it has stopped working. What I mean by this is that when I click the correct option (the place On the slide tagged as the correct answer), the slide progresses normally. However, if I click anywhere but the correct location, then I do not get the failure caption that was previously included on the try-it slides. My guess is that the try-it works such that if you click the correct location, it shows you the success caption and does whatever action you had set for 'On success', which in my case, was to proceed to the next slide. But when you click anywhere other than the correct location, the failure caption kicks in, and whatever action you defined in the 'Last Attempt' is executed -- this somehow seems to be interfering with the steplist feature that I just built and I can't figure out how to fix it.

Can someone please help me with this.

Thanks,

Sean

How to create a rollover button effect in Captivate 7?

Hi,

I recently upgraded from Captivate 6 to Captivate 7 and am curious to know how I can create a rollover state for a SmartShape button. Basically, let's say I have a SmartShape being used as a button. What I want is to have the button have a glow effect and a shadow effect each time the mouse is hovered over it. Is there an easier way than having two objects on the slide -- one as the normal state and one the mouse hoever image. What I'm thinking is that the mouse hovered state image will have it's 'Visible in Output' set as unchecked and I can use an Advanced Action to show the object on mouse hover. Perhaps I can have the mouse hovered state image as a rollover SmartShape too?

Nonetheless, this looks like too much work. If I have 10 clickables on the page for which I want rollover effects, I would need to have 10 additional objects with their rollover states -- just seems like too much, but perhaps that's the Captivate way. Or I am I missing the obvious?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

I've set my playbar to NOT show on overlay because that would cover up the lower section of the application screenshot, so now the playbar is displayed outside the canvas area and doesnt interfere with anything on screen. The problem is that on the siides where the playbar is hidden (Assign cpcmdShowPlaybar = 0), there is a colored strip at the bottom of the screen (for where the playbar would have been had it's visibility been turned on), which I don't want to have.

How do I achieve this?

Thanks,

Sean

Weird issue. Captivate 6 not letting me select a script for an Advanced Action

Hi, So i'm facing this really weird issue on a captivate 6 project that i built. I need to add an Advance Action on a slide Exit action. This was previously set as "Continue" and now I want to set this to "Execute Advanced Action" (an Advanced Action script that I just wrote). The thing is that when I change the On Exit property to "Execute Advanced Actions", I am not able to select a script from the "Script" dropdown. I've tried everything from:

changing machines and doing this on different computers with Captivate 6

Making copies of the file and trying those

Closing Captivate and Restarting my computer

Ensuring that the slides are not locked

but can't seem to figure this out. Also funnily, if I try to set the On Exit property of let's say slide 67 as "Execute Advanced Actions" (when it was previously just "Continue"), all other slides are also changing to this, meaning the On Exit property for all other slides has also been changed from "Continue" to "Execute Advanced Actions".

I've been stuck with this for the last 6 hours and can't figue this out.

Please Help!!!

-Sean

Open an external HTML file from a Captivate 6 project

Hi,

So I'm using Captivate 6 and trying to achieve the following. I've inserted a smartshape on one of my slides. When the user clicks this, I want to open an HTML file in a separate (new) window. The thing is that the HTML file not a web URL but an HTML file that I've designed. I'm struggling with this and know that I'm missing something here.

Where do I need to place this external file (lets call it external.htm for now) in my published folder?

I am publishing using the SWF option and not HTML5

What action do I set on the smartshape that's supposed to open external.htm? Should it be the "Open URL or File" or should it be the "Execute JavaScript"?

Would this be the same logic if I were to replace the HTML file to say a PDF?

Would be great if someone could help me out with this.

Thanks,

Sean

How can I pause a slide until the user clicks a button?

I wish to pause a slide until the user clicks a button (which I've created out of a Smartshape). The thing is that I haven't added a click box object over the smartshape but have only set the smartshape properties to "Use as Button". If I were to add a clickbox object, I would get a "Pause project until user clicks" in the options section of the properties. However in using a smartshape as a button, I cannot find this option. I am using Captivate 6. Seems strange as I would have expected to see the same checkbox option even if I were to use a smartshape as a button but I dont. Can't someone help me and let me know if I'm missing something.

Of course I could use a clickbox over my smartshape to achieve what I want, but I want to avoid thsi for two reason:

I want to avoid adding another object when I dont need it.

My smartshape is a right arrow (indicating "Begin"), and I dont want a squarish click box sitting on top of a triangle because that just shows the hand pointer even if the cursor isn't exactly over the arrow button because it enter the clickbox area.

Thanks,

Sean

How to create a toggle button that shows/hides a smartshape?

Hi,

I'm working in Captivate 6 and would like to create a button (could be a smartshape button, say smartshape A), that On Click, shows another smartshape B. When you click this (SmartShape A) button again, it hides SmartShape B -- so basically it toggles the visibility of SmartShape B. How would i do this in Captivate?

Thanks,

Sean
