Flash Player version penetration statictics

We've just published our second almost-annual look at the versions of Flash Player we see out in the wild, as Adobe haven't updated their own stats recently.

You can see them at http://www.extravision.com/blog/flash-still-everywhere which also includes a link back to the previous results.

I think it looks fairly promising, recent version wise, though the mobile change is interesting.

You clients and users may vary though ;-)

What do you think ?

Can anyone confirm my bug https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3508592 ?

It looks like valid syntax like :

variables.incomingGateway.updateWhere(fields={'campaignId'=arguments.newCampaignId},where ={'id'=arguments.incomingId});

is causing the CFScript parser to explode...

FlexPMD view always empty (Flex Builder 4.5.1 in Eclipse 3.6.2 on 32bit WinXP)

I've installed the v1.2 all in one .zip and configured it as per http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexpmd/FlexPMD+Eclipse+plugin after installing the plugin itself some time ago (back in v1.1 days). No updates are show right now as pending and the update site is enabled.

Although the CPD detector runs OK, when I right click a source folder and choose 'Run FlexPMD', the Flex PMD view remains empty. The PMD builder is enabled for the project too, no joy.

The eror log doesn't have anthing relevent, just :

java.version=1.6.0_26

java.vendor=Oracle Corporation

BootLoader constants: OS=win32, ARCH=x86, WS=win32, NL=en_GB

I get a load of matches from CPD along the lines of

for (var i:int=0;i<something.length;i+=)

{

var thing:Thing=some.access.method();

but of course the main body of the for loop is different in each case, this is just a common way to write for loops !

Is there a setting I might have wrong ?

This silent background update is just what Flash needs - there is no point bothering the vast majority of users, it should Just Work in the background to fix itself.

But is there a way for administrators to lock down the update process ? What about SUS intergration for Windows admins ?

So, there's a new control panel applet, apperently.

But the install instructions still just talk about libflashplayer.so, and there only seems to be a KDE (4) control panel plugin included without comment.

What's going on Adobe-ians ?

Not with standing it's taken 6 months for anyone to notice this needs to be an opt-in feature (I personally think, even in a 3D layout, tool tips should be scaled, even to very small sizes), how do people think this should be handled ?

Any sensible implementation is going to mean altering IToolTipManager, right, to add something like either 'miniumScaleSize:Number=0.1' or 'scaleToolTips:Boolean=false' ?

http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FLEXDMV-2048 suggests I should probably be adding a new method to that interface *anyway*, but I feel I might now be touching a *lot* more stuff than I could do. I've no checked, but are there any (many) alternative IToolTipManager implementations I would break ?

Determing the scale of a component

The context for this is a bug I'm trying to fix (#SDK-19578) where if a component/application has a scaleX/scaleY applied to it, the tool tip appears at the default scale and so looks too big/small.

Our specific case is using application.scaleX / scaleY in an AIR application to make it easier to read for vision impaired users.

My first attempt only addressed this specific case, so I would do

currentToolTip.scaleX = (currentTarget as UIComponent).parentDocument.scaleX

though I commented on the issue maybe .parentApplication would be better.

Corey Lucier however makes the very good point that you can't assume the scale of 'this' component (a page in a viewStack) is the same as the overall scale of the whole application - any of the intermediate components could have a scale applied.

So... is the correct approach more like:

scale=1

item=parent

while (item.parent)

scale=scale*item.scale

item=item.parent

wend

currentToolTip.scale=scale

Patches that come in chunks

This is more of a process question about how patches are built and submitted. In other large complicated open source projects (such as the Linux kernel) it's fairly common for things to be added in stages, so for instance the first patch on an issue might address the problem in (some) common cases, and later patches will integrate feedback from testers and address more and more edge cases. I've had a patch rejected because it didn't cover all the edge cases (which is fair enough, I hadn't though of them !) but going forward what do the Adobeians feel about this area ? Are patches that only address a subset of the issues OK ? Or would you prefer one (larger, more invasive) patch that covered the whole bug surface ?

In the thread around and about http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/message/140998 (the Flex product manager) says that

a) they've tweaked the subject and body templates so things are a little better

b) if they fix the email header problems so that threading works correctly (as it used to) it might take a bit longer than a) did

Why they didn't spot all this before go-live (maybe they did and decided to do it anyway, for what ever reason) I've no idea, and why it's the Flex product manager feeding this back to a community not even on this forum is another exercise I'm backing away from :-)

When using the non-rich editor, a default I prefer, all line breaks like this one: are stripped from the posted content. This breaks code snippits, for instance.
