Year class: A classification system for Android - any thoughts?

Facebook posted a few days ago how they no longer look at Android versions but instead look to hardware capabilities when developing their app(s):

A significant, and increasing, problem we have experienced over the past two years of deploying to Android isn't the fragmentation of the OS versions, rather the fragmentation of hardware.

Cheap Android devices are often shipping with v6 ARM CPUs but Air only supports V7.

These cheap Android devices can run the latest Android versions though which is hugely difficult to explain to clients. Clients think that since the latest devices can all run the latest Android version, why can't Air also support those same devices? A logical question to have but, understanding the lower power hardware doesn't always make sense to these clients.

Sure, it's a great marketing move by the hardware manufacturers who use the 'latest Android version' as a headline for shipping cheap old hardware! But, it makes it a nightmare for us Air developers.

I'm an electronics engineering graduate so I acutely understand both the hardware and software complications/implications of this situation but I'm wondering what we're going to do about.

A version of Adobe Air that would run on legacy ARM v6 would be great because a lot of cheap hardware still uses that form factor. Raspberry Pi for instance uses that CPU form and therefore being able to target that device with Adobe Air in the education market would be a HUGE opportunity! Also, the 'internet of things' could be a huge market for Air developers who could adopt such hardware as the Raspberry Pi. I do though, as I hint above, appreciate the development and resource costs for supporting that older CPU core though.

So, I wanted to throw this out there to see what other people think - both developers and Adobe themselves...

Is there a solution out there? Or can we, as a community, create a solution?

Thoughts on Air supporting new Arm 64-bit CPU in iPhone 5s

Hi guys,

Just wondering what the info is surrounding Air supporting the 64-bit architecture.

As Apple say the existing 32-bit apps will work fine but, what's the plan going forwards...or isn't there one yet?

iOS simulator doesn't seem to enable writing to disk?

Hey,

Am trying to test our latest app on iOS6.1 via the iOS simulator.

Problem is that we don't seem able to write anything to disk.

We have several shared objects which we can't 'flush' plus, when we try to write a file to disk we also get a fault.

The app works fine on actual iOS devices so I know our code is correct.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of issue?

I can't find any documentation to suggest we can't write to disk from the simulator so am a bit stumped!

Any ideas or advice greatly appreciated!

Ane causing compile problems - Air 3.9

My ANE I'm working on was working fine with multiple re-compiles but then suddenly FB keeps complaining about it with the following message.

Any ideas?!

Howto: pass vector of custom objects to iOS via ANE?

Does any one know how to pass a vector containing custom objects to iOS via an ANE?

I can easily send over vectors of primitive types fine - int, string etc but, I want to send over a vector containing a custom object.

In this case it's a documentVO which has 'properties' of "title" and "description".

Ideally I don't want to send over two parallel vectors - one for each property.

Basically problem is...I have the 'object' in Obj-c as a FREObject but how do I get past that and access the properties or convert the FREObject representation of the vector over to a NSMutableArray etc?

So...any ideas?!

using xib in iOS Ane?

I'm developing an ANE which makes use of an xib view.

How do I package this within the ANE?

The app keeps crashing because it can't find the nib so I'm assuming I need to package it somehow into the ANE?

Can I just place it within the same directory with other assets like png files etc?

Hi all,

We're building an app which needs to show and manipulate PDF documents - basically show PDFs and allow the user to skip to pages via bookmarks.

The app has some other features and UI components so the PDF viewing element should sit within the UI - not create it's own.

So...we could found the brilliant ANE here:

We've successfully modified it so that the bookmarks can be controlled via our AS3 code but, we have a couple of other issues:

1) How can we prevent the PDF viewer going fullscreen? Ideally we'd want to pass in the size and co-ordinates of where we want it positioned. This must be a fairly common requirement of Air iOS ANEs?

2) Any ideas of how we can make it a double page spread and not simply display 1 page at a time?

Error on uploading app for App Store submission

Hi all,

We're trying to upload a new version of our app - an update - but we keep getting errors which are very odd.

The Application Loader app informs us that we're trying to access the UDID through the app and using non-public APIs.

Both of which we're not doing PLUS the original app got uploaded and passed for sale with no issues.

So...we're now using Air 3.7 and/or 3.8.

Has anyone come across these issues before?

VERY odd and very frustrating as we've spent 6 months on this app and now something really strange is preventing us from uploading the IPA.

I'd attached a screenshot of the error but for some reason Application Loader won't even log me in now!

Anyone else experiencing issues at the moment?

Saving (MP3) Sound Objects

Very relevant to mobile devs as we’ll all probably cross this bridge some time...

I have a music downloader app which using the load of the sound object to grab ID3 data. Then, I use a URL Loader to download the actual file - much easier than the below...

This seems overkill and I should be able to use the extract method of the Sound object to save out the file. Right?

But, this extract method exposes the raw data and whenever I save it to a file it bloats from 9Mb to approx 77Mb.

I’d rather not have to write an MP3 parser since the data is already an MP3 or...when the MP3 is loaded, does FP then convert it to a WAV in it’s memory??

Any ideas of how to do this in a straight forward way??

How to save video to camera roll on iOS?

Hi,

The Air API provides a way via the CameraRoll class to save an image to the native iOS camera roll but...how do we do the same for video?

Will I have to created an ANE to do?

Seems crazy to do so....

Any ideas? Are there any ANEs out there already to do this?

spark list remove items crashes app

Just wondering if any one else has seen this 'bug'??

We have a spark list in our iOS app which works fine when we populate it but if we want to remove an entry the app crashes.

We're using standard techinques for manipulating the data provider array collection and so the app works perfectly on the desktop.

But, on the device the app just crashes.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Has anyone created an app for iOS and/or Android which successfully logs a user into Facebook and therefore has an access token?

The AS3 FB api requires the FB popup to work which is fine but, it doesn't work on iOS during my tests.

Any clues?

Can we target an embedded stagewebview component to display the popup?

Could we show the initial app state until login as a stagewebview then, once logged in...go to the main app?

Just some thoughts.

VERY interested to hear how others have integrated Facebook using AS3 in their iOS and Android apps.

Ok, I've searched the forum and no posts...so, I'm either trying to do something impossible that is well documented somewhere that I've missed or, no-one seems bothed about this functionality?!

What I want to do is simple: use AS3 within my app to enable the user to make calls on their iOS or Android device.

Is this possible? If so, how? Which libraries do I use.

Any help, comments or ideas very much welcome.

tooltip lost when moving to Flash builder

I setup the tooltips on my components in Catalyst but when I'm now in Flash builder all I see is a little bubble - no text etc.

Am tempted to upgrade my iPhone 4 but don't want to if I can't publish Air apps to it...need to test on it before the 'fall' whatever date that means!

datalist databinding in flash builder

Ok, so I have everything setup in Catalyst and imported into Flash Builder ok.

But, how do I get data from my AS code to bind to the datalist?

I am getting my data from web services - something I'm fine and experienced at doing. But, how do I databind to these components created in Catalyst?

Any help greatly appreciated!
