Ideas to speed up creating 1:1 previews?

(and no, telling me the only way to create them is to let it churn all night isn't useful)

I saw a couple topics asking about this, but I presume they're enterprise installations, NOT simple home systems... If I DO have to do this, does someone have a basic, idiot-proof process that spells out in human-understandable language the exact process of doing this?
<p style="min-height: 8pt;
Incorporating Active D-lighting in Lightroom or Bridge?

So far, the only path I've found is to open the images in View NX2 and convert them to 16-bit tiff files because View NX2 doesn't have any "convert to dng" that I can find.

Then, I have to open the tiff files in Bridge (or LR), shove them into ACR, and save them as .dng files. Aside from being clumsy, the .dng files are HUGE... a 48MB .NEF becomes a 42MB (approximately) .dng file. BUT, if I go through View NX2 and generate .tiff files, the tiff conversion to .dng generates a file between 110 and 120MB - almost THREE TIMES larger than a .dng created directly from the .nef.

Is there a reasonable way of getting a source file into Bridge orLightroom that incorporates the data in the Nikon .NEF?

i7 920, SSD for O/S and programs, 24GB of DDR3 memory, bunch of hard drives.

The ONLY new hardware is the SSD (2 weeks) and the memory, up from 12GB.

LR 5.2 CC got upgraded from 5.2RC yesterday.

I have SOMETHING bizarrely screwed up in the Print module...

I haven't tried this on all sizes, but this morning I needed to print a 5.7 on the Epson 3880. I can say I printed previously in 5.2 RC with no problems.

Woke up the printer, ran a nozzle check, which worked fine, then set up for the 5x7. Did the page setup, same as always, except it's for a 5x7. Told it to do a print preview, same as always.

Went into the Print module, same as always, did all the normal stuff. Hit "Printer" and the popup displays, again as always, and I hit "OK".

It hangs doing "Preparing Print Job" It churns about 25% busy but I never see any progress...

So, I killed that, and checked my preferences. Everything APPEARS to be fine. Shut down Lightroom and restarted.

In Library, I selected my single image to print. Went into Print module. It sat for approximately 60 seconds with the progress bar indicating "Collecting Information". Finally finished.

Then, instead of displaying my selected image on the template, it used the first image in the catalog. I had to select another image, then reselect the image I wanted to print.

Continued through the process and hit "Printer", which displayed the printer popup.

This time I looked carefully, and the one difference I can see is that on the popup, where it says "Print Range", it shows 1 to 34453 (which is the number of images in this catalog). It starts with "All" selected, and even if I clear the numbers, it STILL hangs with "Preparing Print Job". The "Selected" radio button is grayed out and I can't use it.

Also, at the top of the screen it says:

Page: 5155 of 34453

Paper 127 x 178 (5 x 7 in)

Printer: Epson Stylus Pro 3880

which I don't recall ever seeing before. Doesn't it usually say "Page: 1 of 1"?

I have no idea what I've got goofed up, but it APPEARS that every time I go into Print, it's grabbing every image in the catalog and it's DETERMINED to print them all... What have I done THIS TIME?

Optimizing Performance in PSCC

For example, my usual workflow has a layer for cloning, a layer for dodging, one for burning, an adjustment layer for curves and an adjustment layer for hue/sat. If I'm on Layer 0, and click on the Clone layer, it takes approximately 2 seconds to switch. Clicking on the hue/sat layer takes approximately the same 2 seconds. Previously, I know I never noticed the time to change layers, so I suspect it was

Changing tools, likewise, is significantly slower than it was previously.

In case it is/was something systemic, I checked the event logs, but I'm not throwing any errors in either the application section OR the system section.

I thought it might be a virus, so in addition to my daily run of Microsoft Security Essentials, I went to the online version of Trend Micro and had that do a full scan. It found only a couple registry errors that weren't actually errors, just artifacts.

I went through running services and turned off anything I didn't need, and went online and shut down any I didn't want running while testing.

So far, NOTHING has made any difference.

The only thing I'm seeing, and I've always had this, Photoshop uses a LOT of memory. At the moment, with one D300, dng file open, CS6 is using 7.75 GB of memory, an d Lightroom is using 1.8 GB. And, I believe if I GAVE Photoshop more memory it would use it.

At present, my preferences for performance are set at:

Available RAM: 10987 MB

Ideal: 6043-7911

PS Use: 8140

History and cache are

Tall and Thin

Default

Big and Flat

History States are 90 - this is down from 150, which I'd always used in the past

Cache levels: 6 - down from 8

Cache Tile Size: 1024K

Drawing Mode: Advanced (I've tried both normal and advanced, and it doesn't APPEAR to affect anytyhing)

Use Graphics Process is checked

30-bit display is checked.

Finally, in an effort to determine if I'm REALLY seeing a problem or just crazy, I went to my laptop, an i-720, 8GB system with a much less capable video card and images, catalog, and cache all on the same spindle, opened a file and played.......

Even on the laptop, although intensive operations are slower, I have easily sub-second response time to changing tools and switching from layer to layer. Again, either operation is virtually instantaneous. Which tells me there's SOMETHING going on with my desktop.

So, are there settings I should look at changing or even just experiment with? Something systemic I should look at? Blow it all away and re-install (an UGLY option)... Thoughts?

Converted raw (or .dng) will not open in ACR?

Changing a background on a long haired cat

I have an image of a long-haired cat on a burgundy background. My client (I kid you not) would like me to change the background to dark blue......

I fiddled with several methods but couldn't get the fine, long hairs that are in front of the background to look right.

Eventually, I decided to try the selection/refine edge process...

I put a blue background under the layer with the cat on the burgundy background.

I selected the cat, staying INSIDE the edge so none of the burgundy was selected.

I went into Refine Edge and adjusted the radius until I had most of the edge fur selected. This was about 75 pixels.

I tried Smart Radius, but it didn't seem to make the fur selection any smarter... So, I currently have it off.

I then got the Refine Radius Tool and started doing a little selecting to get the fur right. This is where I hit the problem......

As I select around an ear, for example, I can see the burgundy background show up. When I release the selection, the burgundy disappears and is replaced by the blue. GREAT. BUT, instead of staying OUTSIDE the ear, the inner part of the ear ALSO gets turned blue. The same thing happens all along the edge of the cat - sometimes I get a pretty good selection, other times the blue permeates the area I was selecting. It's not 100%, but it's not ZERO percent either... This MAY not be a huge problem in some spots, but it's a BIG problem, for example, in the ears.

So, I get done selecting, and I have blue around the cat.

I click Decontaminate Colors to get rid of the blue and/or the burgundy from all around the cat. It works in places - along sides and such where the fur is shorter. But, the ears are still blue as are some of the longer tail fur.

I ran the amount between 50% and 100%, and although the decontaminate gets better, it never gets really good.

Do and Output to a new layer with a mask, figuring I'll just clean up some of the problem areas on the mask. Doesn't work. I can open the mask. I can see that instead of having a white cat outline, I have a PARTIAL white cat outline but the face, ears, and some areas are shades of gray.

So, on the image layer, I take a white brush at 100% and try to clean up the mask, painting over the ears to have the fur and ear detail come back, but it just comes in as mush. NO detail.

Am I using the wrong tool? Magic wand is nowhere NEAR detailed enough to give me a really good selection. Replace color leaves me with a blue background but burgundy edges.

If I'm using the right tool, am I just expecting too much from the tool? 'Cause whatever I'm getting, it's sort-of working, but not well enough for what I need.

Thoughts? And no, telling the client we have to reshoot isn't an option!
