Is there a way to tell what settings were used to export a PDF?

Is there any way to tell what export settings were used to create a PDF? I'm trying to recreate settings used in a previous PDF.

Everything turns black when I drag text box

Typically when I drag an object, such as a text frame, I can either select and drag immediately and just see the outline of the frame moving, or select and hold for a second to see the contents of the frame move as I drag. In a current project, I have a transparent object on the page, and when I select and hold in order to see the contents of the text frame move as I drag, the entire text frame turns black, and a second later the transparent object also turns black, and I can't see the text move as I drag. In ID 5.5 a similar thing occurred, but the text frame turns gray, with the text still clearly visible when I drag. Is there a way in ID CC to prevent the items from going completely black when you drag them in situations where there's an underlying transparent object?

Combine InDesign Files?

Is it possible to combine several InDesign (CS5.5) files into a single ID file, similar to how Acrobat will combine multiple PDFs into a single PDF?

Right aligned numbers in numbered lists in paragraph styles

Is there a way (in InDesign 5.5) to create a numbered list in a paragraph style that makes the numbers right aligned, so that a two-digit number aligns to the right, making the space between the number and the text equal regardless of whether it's a one- or two-digit number? I can do it manually with two tabs, but the Bullets & Numbering dialog in Paragraph Style Options only allows for one tab position. It would be handy to be able to automate this kind of numbering.

I work on a number of InDesign files that are updated every year. Several of them give a message when printing that says "The following fonts are not currently available:" and it names an old version of a font that we use. That version of the font doesn't show up in Find Font, and as far as I can tell it isn't specified in any paragraph or character style. Any ideas why this might occur?

We currently use ID 5.5, but this has happened for years, going back several versions.

Can't renumber PDF pages

I'm working with a PDF of a book where the cover is a separate file. I have added pages for the cover (front and back, inside and out) and need to renumber the cover pages so that the page numbers of the PDF match the page numbers of the text. I know how to do this, but with this PDF the dialog for numbering the pages doesn't appear when I select Number Pages from the page Options menu. Is there some hidden property that might be keeping the pages from renumbering?

I'm using Acrobat X, Mac OS 10.6.8

changing preset zoom increments

Is it possible to change the preset zoom increments (ID CS5)? For a lot of my work, I find 225% or 250% is an optimum magnification for me. I can get it there manually by typing in my desired magnification, but it would be so much easier to just click the zoom tool (or, especially the keyboard shortcut) and get increments of 25 or 50 rather than 100.

Can CS5 open CS 5.5 files?

Optimize/Reduce File Size

I'm working with a PDF that I did not create but have been asked to try to reduce the size of. It was created in InDesign CS4 (don't know if it was Mac or Windows). It is a large book (600 pages) but entirely text, other than one graphic on the cover. A similar book that I had worked on produced a PDF of about 2.8 MB. The one in question is over 6MB. Using the Reduce File Size command and using the Optimizer both increase the file size.

Auditing the space usage shows that 86% of the space is "Structure Info." I believe the InDesign file was done by someone not very versed in the ways of InDesign, and that there were many places where text was threaded in strange ways, with lots of overlapping text boxes. I don't know if that would have anything to do with the "structure info" in the PDF. "Structure Info" isn't even listed in the audit results of the normal PDFs I'm comparing this one to. The InDesign file was actually several InDesign files, and I don't know how the PDFs of the individual files were combined, but that's another piece of information.

Given the above facts and the little I know about how the PDF was really exported and assembled, does anyone have any ideas about actually making the file smaller? Based on the other PDFs we've done of simlilar books, it should be somewhere around 2.5 to 3MB in size, not the 6 to 8 it currently is.

InDesign CS4 running slow

InDesign CS 4 (version 6.0.6) runs intermittently slow. It will often hang up for a few seconds during pretty much any operation (typing, scrolling, zooming, selecting -- type or objects, etc.). Restarting InDesign and the computer has no effect. Any ideas?

It's running on an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, OSX 10.6.8.

Using old versions of InDesign

I've been asked to work on some documents in InDesign 2 because that's what the client has. Are there any problems that might occur if I install InDesign 2 on my 2009 iMac running OSX 10.6.7, which also has ID CS4 and CS5 installed? The client has ID 2, not CS2, as far as I can tell.

phone directory shortcuts

I'm typesetting a phone directory in which each entry starts with a last name, first name; 10-digit phone number, and then address. The last name and the phone number need to have a character style applied to them (both get the same style). I can do the Last Name with a nested style. Is there a way to apply a character style to a "word" [the phone number] within a line of text? Some kind of GREP search? Here's a sample entry with punctuation, in case it helps:

LastName FirstName; 000-000-0000 123 Street; Job Title

A second need is for a way to populate the page headers with the Last Name from the first and last entries on a spread. Is there a way to automate that?

auto page numbers in roman numerals

Can I use an auto-page number placeholder on a master page and have it populate the pages with roman numerals? This would be for a front section of a book. Do I need to create an InDesign Book rather than a regular document in order to do this? The Layout > Numbering & Section Options menu item is grayed out in the document. (InDesign CS3, Mac).

TIFF File Size

Sometimes when I save a JPEG as a TIFF, it creates a file that shows a file size of say 3MB, but sometimes a JPEG of similar dimensions and resolution will come out as a TIFF that is in the range of 20-30MB. What might be making that difference in the resulting files size?

"No Break" in contextual menu

InDesign Tables add space between lines of text

I am working on a series of documents that use tables for some elements of the text such as a calendar with columns for date, day of week, and event. All the cell borders are set to zero so the text just looks like tabbed text. The problem I'm running into is that the table appears to add about two points of vertical space between the table and the regular text above it. The documents are designed without a baseline grid, so I can't simply make the paragraph styles lock to the grid, but we do want the spacing between various heading styles and other text to be consistent. Does an InDesign table have some kind of hidden vertical dimension, or am I missing some added space that I should be able to remove? All cells are sized to be equal to the leading of the paragraph style of the text they contain, and any space before or after is added as an inset in the cell, but for some reason there appears to be about two points of extra space at the top of the table (between the table and the non-table text above it).
